The Connection Between Obesity & Daily Calories

It’s happened to many people before. They feel great, their diet and workout seems to be going great and they’re seeing some results. But then all of a sudden, things take a nose-dive for the worse. They stop losing weight and hit a wall. But then it gets even worse: they gain the weight back! All due to insufficient daily calorie intake.

This might not make sense to you, and, for most people, it completely doesn’t. I mean, how can that be possible? If you eat less, doesn’t it just make sense that you would lose weight? And if it doesn’t make sense, then how do those who suffer from anorexia do it?

Okay, that’s because usually people who suffer from anorexia don’t eat. We’re not talking about eating less; no, some people just don’t eat period. That’s how. But, you have to realize that this method of “losing weight” is extremely unhealthy and very dangerous for your health. Not eating is worse than eating less. Sure, you won’t gain weight but you will suffer from worse health conditions as your body slowly (and sometimes painfully) deteriorates.

But back to the eating less method. Well, it’s not a good one. Why? Because by eating less over the course of a normal day, you’re sabotaging your metabolism, which is a crucial element and tool for weight loss. When you lower your daily calorie intake but maintain your regular physical activity level, your body, and specifically your metabolism, is not being trained to burn fat. This can only happen when there’s fat TO burn. And the argument that your body can just burn your body fat is not valid. That’s because your metabolism has to use even more energy to burn your body fat and it becomes less efficient.

Not only that, when you eat less, you’re providing your body with less nutrients and less fat. So once the body and your metabolism is done burning your body fat, it naturally starts to burn something else: your muscle tissue. This is why you will hit a weight loss wall and then start gaining the weight back. Once your body starts burning your body fat, it’s become very inefficient. So now there’s less body fat, a bit more fat from food but also plenty of muscle tissue. Since your metabolism has lost its awesome efficiency, it’ll start burning fat slower, which is why you gain weight back.

This is why eating less calories overall is pointless because it will land you back to being overweight. Instead, you should eat more often, somewhere in the area of 5-6 small meals per day. By doing this, you are maintaining your metabolism’s great efficiency, because it’s burning fat all day long. If you’re doing something all day long, you get good at it! Also, when you maintain or even increase your daily calorie intake while keeping your physical activity high, you are providing your body with much needed nutrients and minerals that your body loses when you work out.

It’s so important to keep your physical activity level high through workouts, at least 3-4 times a week, even if only for 15-20 minutes each session. And when you are physically active, your body will burn fat amazingly quickly because, seriously, it really needs it after workouts!

So workout and eat well and often! If you are focused on simple ways to lose weight and burn fat, these are the ways to go to really lose the weight and burn off those extra inches and pounds!
