Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP is a communication model that is inter-personal in approach. It is still being researched upon and has mixed fee-back on record, but is being considered as an alternative approach to psychotherapy. Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP is based on subjective study and the enquiry involves language and communication. While some consider Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP as a theory, there are others who swear by its being a set of techniques and more of strategy than a model.

Richard Bandler and John Grinder co-created Neuro-linguistic programming in the 1970s and initially their focus was pragmatic. They supported the modeling of three successful psychotherapists, with the aim of uncovering exhibited patterns of behavior and communication in all three, which were distinctly different from those observed int heir peers. Today, the experimentalism of Richard Bandler and John Grinder in Neuro-linguistic programming can be seen as the many variants applied in seminars and workshops. There are books and audio programs now designed to help clients incorporate Neuro-linguistic programming in the form of exercises and principles, to influence change in themselves and others around them.

Importance of Neuro-linguistic programming:

Neuro-linguistic programming is yet witnessing a great deal of debate on the difference between the depth and breadth of training and standards adopted. Although the field of Neuro-linguistic programming still seems to be loosely spread, the principles and pr-suppositions that are shared by its proponents are making a difference in a lot of people’s lives. Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP helps to increase behavioral choice. This is achieved through manipulation of personal state and a person’s belief and internal representation. The external support is made available by a Neuro-linguistic programming practitioner or trainer. In many cases, today, people are even experimenting with self-application successfully.

Some of the main ideas propounded by Neuro-linguistic programming includes the assumption and generated belief that problems, desires and feelings and even the outcomes of our actions are represented within the visual, auditory and kinesthetic systems of the human anatomy. The underlying principle involves response to non verbal clues instead of just listening to and responding to what a person says. This, those who advocate Neuro-linguistic programming claim enables the person to look beyond and analyse a situation or overcome by himself.

Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP is in contrast to mainstream psychotherapy. It does not focus solely on diagnosis and treatment or the assessment of mental and behavioral disorders. Neuro-linguistic programming works towards helping subjects to overcome self-perceived problems. All this is done in a clinical like setting and while respecting the other person’s capabilities and wisdom. The person’s mind set is restructured to choose additional goals for the intervention even as he or she learns to handle problems. The subject is encouraged to modify and specify goals by the therapist. All this is now part of a practicing therapeutic discipline that is known as Neuro-linguistic Psychotherapy or NLPt.

The application of Neuro-linguistic programming is now being successfully in business communication, management training, and sales and also within the world of sport. Except for the application of Neuro-linguistic programming techniques such as anchoring, reframing or therapeutic metaphor, the applications can be adopted and practiced beyond the therapeutic setting.
