What It Takes To Be A Holiday Rep

Posted by Prettyone in Career

Becoming a holiday rep is something that many young adults aspire to, many see it as a free ticket to travel the world and have a great time doing it. This however is a common misconception. Most people do not realise that these types of jobs carry a great deal of responsibility and effort. Fundamentally as a holiday rep you are on the front line, representing the holiday company at all times and having to deal with complaints and any issues that may arise during tourists’ holidays. This means long hours and stress, if you don’t think you can handle this, these types of travel jobs are not for you.

There is however benefits to being a holiday rep. if you are sick of the monotonous drone of office work and cannot stand the nine to the five routine then these jobs with irregular hours and interesting experiences at every turn could be for you. In addition, the biggest benefit has got to be getting away from the awful British weather. As a rep you join a community of workers somewhere else in the world, this could be Spain, Australia and even Vietnam.

While reps are not greatly paid for the jobs they do, the predominant form of income for them is to earn commission on selling excursions and added extras to holiday packages. If you have the ability to sell, there is little doubt that you will be a good rep earning far more that your basic pay. This is true no matter where in the world you are, either selling dog sledding in Scandinavia or selling banana boat trips in the Caribbean.

There are however downsides to the jet set lifestyle of a holiday rep. jobs within the travel industry can be extremely stressful due to their service nature. In addition, while you may be excited about heading away from home for an extended period of time it is almost a certainty that homesickness will affect you at some time. Most who have worked in the industry agree that the first six weeks are the hardest as you know very few people and have to take time to settle in. If you can last the first two months however you should be able to enjoy your job wholeheartedly.

It is not all fun and games as a holiday rep. It is normally the case that as a rep you are in charge and hence responsible for large groups of people in a foreign country. While working you may have to cope with instances such as minor illnesses, serious injury or even death. Having the coping skills and being able to keep a cool head during such events is an essential part of being a holiday rep.

The schedule for a rep is not easy either, not only must you look after those staying in your resort night and day but as flights come in, greeting tourists from the airport is a vital constituent of the work. Flights come in during the early hours and late at night meaning that as a rep, it is certain that your sleep pattern will suffer eventually. As well as this, you will be the primary focus for complaints, subsequently having great people skills is essential if you are to succeed as a rep.

Overall a life in rep type travel jobs is ultimately worthwhile. It is a difficult job with many responsibilities although the benefits of ensuring people have a great holiday makes it hugely rewarding. So if you are upbeat and can make those around you bubble with energy, then life abroad as a holiday rep could be for you.

Career expert Thomas Pretty looks into what skills are needed to work in travel jobs and specifically the roles involved when working as a holiday rep.

Career Opportunities In Banking And Finance

Posted by Tradepla in Career

Your decision to have a finance career can be a start of something big for you. According to latest employment and business trends, the growth of the world economy plus the increasing number of people retiring in the next decade will create a demand for finance professionals.

Commercial banking means having an opportunity to work in the areas of financial management, accountancy and auditing, securities, commodities and financial services sales. There’s also an opportunity to work in the area of financial and credit analysis since commercial banks are there to provide banking services to individuals as well as small and large businesses and organizations.

People who work in banking and finance are paid well for the work that they do. Four of the fields that many professionals get into include accountancy and tax, Insurance, investment banking and retail banking. Let’s talk about each of these.

For people to work in accountancy and tax, you need to graduate and get your CPA or certified public accountancy license. To learn more about what you will be doing, many have to complete an on the job training with a legitimate accountancy firm.

The training period is about three years and afterwards, you can continue on staying with them, working for another firm or going into private practice.

Insurers just like accountants need to be licensed. This varies from state to state so you have to study and then pass the exam. Once you do so, your career may get you to sell property or casually insurance and life or health insurance.

You should also take further classes in the future because although you have your license already, rules change and you have to be aware of them.

Perhaps the biggest challenge selling insurance is deciding whether to work for an insurance company or doing this on your own. There are advantages and disadvantages doing both. When you are employed, you get a basic salary while those who decide to work for themselves can only make money earning commissions when a sale is made. How well you do is entirely up to you.

Investment banking is different from regular banking because you are there to raise capital for a company by issuing shares or bonds. Later on, you may even work with a team that advises companies regarding mergers and acquisitions.

Also under investment banking is capital markets. Here, the professional is tasked with trading bonds stocks and other financial products to increase the portfolio of the client.

But before you get into that, most entry levels personnel start out doing research first about certain companies and who are their competitors. Their information is then passed on to the account managers who will then advice the client.

Lastly is retail banking which many of us are aware of because these are the people we meet in the bank from the teller to the bank manager when we need to deposit or withdraw cash and apply for a loan.

Unlike accountancy or insurance, you don’t need to get a license to do this kind of work. You just have to be customer oriented with strong interpersonal and communication skills since you will be dealing with people.

Tax and accountancy, insurance, investment banking and retail banking are the four basic types of jobs for anyone that wants to pursue a banking and finance career after graduation from college. Career progression in any of them is excellent and this can only happen with additional training and at times a license.

This can be achieved by part time study so all you have to do now is weigh your options and then go for it.

Do You Want To Become A Child Actor?

Posted by Barticles in Career

Many famous actors and actresses got their start at a very young age. Most directors favor working with adults that had child acting experience because they feel very comfortable in front of the camera. There is a wide variety of big-time actors that did a lot of work as children. Some of these include: Drew Barrymore, Book Shields, and Lindsay Lohan.

If the child has talent, it is usually easier to break into the industry at a young age. There is no question that there are a lot of dangers for children that get put in the spotlight in their youth. There have been countless individuals who have struggled with addiction and other problems because of their success on the big screen. It is the responsibility of the parent to protect their child and hold his/her feet to the ground. There is nothing wrong with pursuing acting with your child if you do it in the right manner.

There are a few basis things all children must do to be successful. First, he/she is going to have to land a few jobs and use these little successes to build a respectable portfolio. Having a commendable portfolio is going to be the most important factor in getting work. This is the key that will let the child be considered for more significant work in the future. The most important things are to get as much experience and confidence as possible.

All parents think their child is the most beautiful and talented thing to walk the Earth. Most don’t realize there is a lot more to do then just stand there and look cute. Acting is a skill, and like all other skills some people are better at it than others. There are a few basic characteristics that all successful child actors possess.

First off, the child needs to be a willing participant. Many times, it is the parents that want to pursue this career and not the child.

Next, the child needs to have a dedicated work ethic. It takes an enormous amount of time for anyone to memorize an entire script. If your kid has a hard time focusing, he/she is going to have no chance in the acting industry.

Lastly, your child needs to understand and be able to deal with rejection. This is just a part of the acting world. There are going to be times when everything does not go according to plan. If your child has a hard time dealing with this, it is going to be very difficult making acting a career.

The most important thing parents need to worry about is the protection of their child. You can’t let yourself or your child get caught up in all the hype. This will prove to be very destructive and detrimental well into adulthood. When done correctly acting can be a great activity for children. It will broaden the mind and develop unique talents.

TRU Talent Management has been working with child actors for over 10 years. TRU Talent will help develop your child’s potential skills. TRU Management is one of the most trusted agencies for child actors in the West.

Effort As A Prerequisite Of Finding Jobs In The UK

Posted by Prettyone in Career

Looking for jobs can be one of the most soul wrecking experiences in life, especially when you have been looking for an extended period with no success. With so many different jobs available in the UK today, for those who are uncertain upon which career path to follow, the choice can not only be difficult but also next to impossible. Not having a clear picture of which jobs to apply for makes the task extremely time consuming. Searching for jobs should most of the time be directed; if it is not you often find yourself just searching thousands of listings with no luck.

This should be your first concern; look at the types of jobs in the UK you think you will be eligible for or would like to do and then pursue them with vigour. To find which career you may be suited to you should take a serious look at the skills you possess. Not only your skills however, you should also take into account your education; many different UK industries need different levels of education and understanding the needs of these industries is vital. Education, despite official qualifications can be difficult to quantify, unless you possess applied learning in vocational fields, generic education can often leave you just as lost as when you started.

After you have made a decision on the types of jobs and the industries you are willing to work in it is essential to produce a CV. When writing a CV it is advisable to make it applicable to the types of jobs you are trying to secure. Make the most of your skills that suit a certain job role, being too generic can mean that employers will overlook your application readily. As well as presenting your skills, a CV provides employers with an indication of your personality and work ethic, if you produce an out of date and ill written CV, employers are likely to think that you have a poor work ethic and are not willing to put the effort into working. By comparison, sending an application that is excellently scripted and fully up to date shows you have the skills to dedicate yourself to tasks. These are characteristics that all employers are looking for.

After a CV the next stage of securing jobs in UK is to undertake the interview process. At this stage it is vitally important to present yourself properly. Always wear a suit; even if you feel that job will be easy to secure, wearing a suit shows that you are willing to make the effort and understand the importance of presentation. Interviews are all about first impressions so conduct yourself in a professional manner and be receptive to any questions. In addition you should show enthusiasm for the position, by showing you are passionate about your work can put you in good stead with employers. Most important of all however is to be yourself, by doing this you will be more comfortable in the interview and able to get your points across more successfully.

Searching for jobs is never an easy task, it is however an essential one. If you remember through all stages of your hunt to put effort in success will eventually be forthcoming. It is easy to lose heart, but by keeping your efforts up it is likely you will find the right job in the end.

Why The Timing Is Right: Become A Travel Agent

Posted by Getpaidtocruise in Career

The travel industry is a seven trillion dollar industry expected to double to fourteen trillion dollars within the next decade. This lucrative industry is currently growing 23% faster than the global economy.

A key factor in this growth phenomenon is the steady stream of baby boomers who are retiring, or getting ready to retire. In fact, baby boomers are retiring at a rate of one every eight seconds. Travel was rated the number one thing these baby boomers intend to do when they do retire.

There is now an increased demand for qualified travel agents, due to the explosive growth of the industry as a whole. To become a certified travel agent, your options are not limited to the traditional brick and mortar setting.

Many reputable travel agencies are now offering attractive options for the individual looking for a legitimate home based business.

If your goal is to work as an independent travel agent from the comfort of your own home, you may want to consider working as an online travel agent.

Here are some companies that you can research, that offer excellent income opportunities and complete training. Please note, that many travel companies that actively recruit agents to work from home, will hire their agents as employees.

There are also travel companies that recruit independent agents. This option will offer the agent the freedom of being self-employed, and the ability to set their own hours.

To take advantage of this option, be aware that there will be an investment required. The ability to make money will be solely at the discretion of the agent who chooses to invest in this business model.

On a positive note, many agents who have invested in this business model are making a very nice income, so be sure to research this option before ruling it out.

Travel companies that currently offer the independent agent business model include TraVerus Travel Network, Global Resorts Network, and Your Travel Business, also known as YTB.

Make sure to do your due diligence! Be sure to research each company carefully, and make it a priority to fully understand the compensation plan. You will also need to know what training is available, and whether the company will offer you the opportunity to become certified.

Don’t be afraid to ask important questions, such as whether the company has IATA(International Air Transport Association), IATAN (International Airlines Travel Agent Network), and CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) Credentials. This is important information to know, especially if you intend to take advantage of the travel perks and benefits available to those in the travel industry.

Here are some questions to ask - What is the initial investment, if any? Are there any additional costs or fees associated with obtaining licensing, or becoming certified? And finally, if you are considering a work at home position, what kind of support and training is offered?

Next, determine whether you a right fit for the travel industry. Lets break down the qualifications that will determine whether you are suited for this challenging, but rewarding career.

Travel agents should have a minimum of a high school diploma. Agents should have a true love for travel,as well as a sincere enthusiasm and love for working with people, because these traits are crucial elements for success in this industry.

Travel agents should also possess excellent multi-tasking and organization skills. Attention to detail and accuracy are very important, along with great communication skills. In addition, good computer skills will be needed.

Travel agents should possess a professional, courteous demeanor when working with suppliers, and the general public. Sales ability and great interpersonal skills are an added plus.

The benefits of becoming a travel agent are many. I have listed the top three.

Travel agents save up to 80% on travel to many of the worlds exclusive resorts and destinations. These discounts include, but are not limited to:

a. Complimentary upgrades
b. Hotel room upgrades and discounts
c. Car rental discounts and upgrades
d. Cruises
e. Theme park discounts

FAM trips, also known as familiarization trips. Suppliers will offer access to their facilities at substantial discounts so that travel agents will have first hand knowledge of their facilities. The travel agent will then be able to make recommendations and book travel for their clients based on their personal knowledge and first hand experience.

The supplier will roll out the red carpet for the travel agent to ensure the travel professional has an outstanding time.

There are also tax benefits for individuals who chose to do this profession as an independent travel agent. You should consult with your CPA or tax professional for more information regarding this benefit.

So, how do I become a travel agent? In summary, becoming a travel agent can be a lucrative and rewarding career. Should you decide that you possess the skills and abilities needed for success, you can look forward to a promising career.

In addition to the companies named in this article, you can do further research online at Google or Yahoo using the following keywords - become a travel agent, how do I become a travel agent, travel agent careers, or online travel agent.

A Great Alternative To Being Your Own Boss

Posted by Snicolle in Career

Many people who are above ground , breathing , and walk with their eyes open probably have dreamt of being a business owner where you can control your working hours and earn a great income without having a boss down your throat.

How it begins is people visualize the end result without realizing the toil one has to go through in order to get there. For instance , it could be the time away from being with their spouse which can result in marital troubles , the financial stress that can occur during the building up of a business , or even once the business is built up the effort required to keep it going.

Let’s face it not all of us can be a Donald Trump or Ray Kroc. There is a lot of sacrifices that have to be made. How many have seen successful business owners who have failed marriages , or kids who turned out wrong just because the parent never spent any time with them when they were growing up. Often I hear from a business owner not to do what they did just because they felt in the end the unbalanced lifestyle they led to chase success was not worth the failed relationships that occurred during process.

Although I admire such entrepreneurs who are risk takers and business savvy and have incredible lifestyles , I for one would not trade my profession for any other on the planet. It has both an element of risk which a self employed person relishes , and security for someone who still wants the insurance of a paycheque to feed his family.

I am a Food and Beverage Waiter in a busy restaurant. For those of you who currently are a waiter and make a living from being one and do not rely on any other form of income you will understand what I am about to explain.

First of all our hourly wage is so low that no one could possibly live on it alone which makes us right there with the self employed business owner who has to get up in the morning to drum up business. However unlike the business owner we get paid for showing up and ready for work and every two weeks it goes into our bank account.

The next great advantage to being a waiter is , unlike the business owner who has to chase people to pay what they owe , we get paid every time we serve a table upon the guest’s departure. This means the waiter lives in a world of instant gratification. What could be better than that ! Leaving work with more money in your pocket than what you came with.

What we can earn is entirely up to us. A selling of a feature on the menu or a great bottle of wine can incur a greater tip thus like a self employed entrepreneur we can be highly motivated as well to provide great service.

Also , the waiter has the excitement of not knowing if it is going to be a really good day or an average day which is not unlike the self employed person. The difference being is with each new day the waiter will make money whereas the other may not. Thus the waiter never will go through the anxiety of a self employed person.

A guest to a restaurant is always there to enjoy a positive experience. In other words to make their day. A self employed person usually has to fix or repair something so the whole scene has a negative influence. They have to present the bill after to the disgruntled customer. The waiter gets the big tip!

Waiters can make anywhere up to $300 a day in gratuities and go home without having to worry about work and carry on with their life. They drive the newer cars and have enough left over to put in their children’s education fund unlike the self employed who awake in the middle of the night worried about how they are going to find their next customer or meet their next payment.

If the waiter takes seriously their profession and is a good money manager they can have just as much time off to enjoy their spouse , children , and home as anybody else can.

Have you heard of the expression , ” People with money have no time then there are people who have no money but a lot of time.” I believe if you are a Food and Beverage waiter you can have a lifestyle balance where you can have both time and money. Unless you are gifted and have the guts to be a Donald Trump or other business tycoon consider becoming a waiter or bartender even if it just part time. Find out what it is like to get paid right away and use your gratuities to pay off debt or go on a holiday. You will be glad you did.

His motivational speaking engagements are both funny and informative. Find out more about Steve Nicolle at his website which is at http://www.stevetalks.ca
