The Benefits Of Freeware In The Homeschool Classroom

Posted by Ranju_kumar in Software

There are many benefits of freeware in the homeschool classroom. My husband and I have been homeschooling our boys since the day that they started kindergarten and finding tools and resources that can assist us in the educational endeavors of our children are extremely important to us. This is especially true when it comes to educational software, teaching scripts, and even freeware that can be found online that teaches important concepts, lessons, and reinforce the skills that are necessary to the overall educational experience. Here, I will share with you some benefits of freeware in the homeschool classroom.

One of the first benefits of freeware, educational software, and teaching scripts online is that they are so convenient. If you are a homeschool parent, you know how limited your time is. Between creating lesson plans, teaching those lessons, field trips, experiments, chores, and work, it is often difficult to run to the bookstore or the library in order to retrieve information that will supplement the educational topics that your little ones are covering. However, with freeware, you can find what you need, when you need it most. I have even been lucky enough to stumble upon some websites that are nothing but freeware software programs. I am pretty sure that this is called a “freeware directory” or maybe a “software directory” but these websites are tops!

The next advantage to using a freeware script in the homeschool environment is that it is, well, free! Now, I am not sure what kind of arrangements that you have when it comes to your finances, but my husband and I work from home so that we can be here at all times for our children. We believe, as parents, it is our responsibility to facilitate the household and take responsibility for our kids. Working at home is a real challenge. We must carefully guard our finances. While it is true that we have managed to work up quite a bit of savings, it is due to the fact that we manage our money well and take full advantage of resources and tools that are really inexpensive or free! By using this type of software, you do not have to go out and buy the program, and you can put that extra money towards other things that your family needs.

When using educational freeware software scripts that can be found online, you can experience the benefit of having a large variety of programs! You can find games and printables that your children can play in their free time. You may even find some that you can enjoy! You can also discover time management and lesson plan tools that you can implement day to day in the homeschool classroom. You can also find dictionary software, encyclopedias, and even large collections of books that you can use to teach from, or your homeschooled children can use to enhance their knowledge. The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to the variety that is offered by all of those directory type websites that offer free software scripts and programs!

As you can see, there are many different benefits associated with the use of freeware in the homeschool classroom.

Mobile Social Networking: Facebook & MySpace Aggregated Safely, Privately & Securely

Posted by Healthcare in Security

Today’s online social networkers want to have instant, 24×7 access to their social network and the information they need, but are not interested in being tied to a wired Internet connection. To get the most out of your social networking experience, members must have anytime, anywhere access to people in their network. Development of mobile applications that work on all combinations of carriers, platforms and mobile device models would make life a lot easier for the avid social networker.

What is needed is an online social networking provider of aggregation, connectedness, and collaboration technology for an individual’s social network. Mobile technology needs to be built on the new WAP 2.0 standards, designed to enable mobile users of social networking sites to access real-time data on their thriving networks through a variety of wireless devices.

A network connectedness & collaboration solution is for people who want to aggregate all the relationship capital they’ve built up from social networking sites for fast & easy sharing within their very own private network. It needs to be a highly safe and secure relationship capital management platform that can privately separate a user’s professional/business profile from their personal/”here I am being cool…” profile. This suite of networking connectedness applications would allows users to collaborate by sharing calendars, contacts, files, and more.

WAP 2.0 connects cellular phone, PDA, and other mobile users with email, contacts, calendar, and task data in their social networking accounts - on a Treo, Nokia or almost any other SmartPhone or Pocket PC. Users can connect their network(s) using their mobile phone, or using a PDA with WiFi or modem connection.

This technological advance provides a colorful and graphic-rich interface that is available on WAP 2.0 compatible cellular phones, PocketPC devices, PalmOS-based devices, as well as other mobile devices.

Also, an extra benefit would be real-time connection between their account and Outlook on the desktop. This connection would ensure, whether a user is accessing their email, contacts, calendar and tasks via Outlook, remotely with a web client, or on a mobile device, that their information is always accessible. It must provide users with virus and spam-free email, shared calendars, contacts and files, tasks, instant messaging, and more.

Email and calendaring solutions help to aggregate and manage one’s own private network. These web-based tools make managing busy schedules easy, and allow users to instantly schedule meetings with colleagues across their social networks enabling users to automatically send meeting requests and changes to participants. Ideally, it would support the iCal industry standard, which enables social networking site users to coordinate their schedules with users of other iCal-compliant calendaring software.

To be useful, products & services for mobile social networking communication must be compatible with any social networking niche such as: Friend Networking, Business Networking, Common Interest Networking, Dating Networking, Pet Networking, Face-To-Face Meeting Facilitation, Sharing Emphasis, Campus, and every other niche site in between.

Be forewarned that a lot of mobile social networking sites offer their services for free in exchange for you seeing all their ads and for target marketing. Be sure you get a commitment from a provider that along with a best-in-class service, you’ll also never see banner, text or other advertisements within the application.

Services must be provided through a Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery model, which gives users desktop-like speed and performance from any computer with Internet access or any mobile device, without having to install software programs. Since it would be delivering its service offerings over the Internet, users would likely be willing to pay only a small monthly fee for on-demand use of the software especially taking into account its ad free.

To recap, a Mobile Social Networking aggregation solution specializes in helping individuals and organizations to aggregate the relationship capital built from any social networking site such as MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, LinkedIn, Bebo plus all others including Mobile Social Networking sites. The software enables you to manage, deliver and track social networking activities for fast & easy sharing of video, audio, photos, files, and more in a safe, secure, and private online space.

Computer Deals - How To Get The Best Deal On A New Computer Or Laptop

Posted by Twinpeak in Computers

If you’re looking for the best deal on a new computer, the following tips will help you get the best price. With this article and a little bit of research you can save a lot of money on a computer or laptop.

First of all you want to take advantage of the search engines that are designed to help you find the lowest prices on laptops or other computers. These search engines are often called shopping bots.

The price you find for any current computer model is usually the regular price not a discounted or sales price, which is what you’re looking for. Determine the retail price for the model you’re considering by going to several sites that list that model and jot down the price range. The package would consist of the computer and monitor typically. A printer, accessories and service contract would be additional costs.

Once you know the price range and the lowest advertised price you can try to negotiate with the vendor or seller, Try to get a discount of at least $25 or so. The retailer may only make $50 on the sale so you may not have much bargaining room.

If possible also have them add a printer and accessories and then ask for a discount of $50 to $200. If you want a service contract you should be able to add that and have a lot more bargaining room. However service contracts are not recommended by many experts so proceed with caution.

You’ll want to look for a system that is already pre-built rather than selecting your own parts to be assembled. This is actually cheaper in the long run.

If you’re not paying cash look for some of the holiday long-term financing options. These can give you six months with no interest which may give you time to come up with the money. Holiday sales prices are often cheaper so you can save a lot of money if you buy then.

You’ll want to check the offers of manufacturer’s rebates and especially those that don’t require you to buy the same brand of monitor and printer.

Although many experts suggest buying a poorly-rated brand that may have a slower speed and life but for the few dollars saved it is not be worth losing any data so always look for the best rated computers and laptops.

Look for clearance computer or laptop models that have a high rating.

Or can you get by with a repaired or refurbished laptop or computer model?

Find out if any brick-and-mortar vendors have floor ‘demo’ models for sale.

Retailers of name-brand computers or laptops may all offer the same price. Be aware that retailers are bound by rules and regulations and may not be able to discount, adjust or lower a price on a given new laptop or computer model.

If you’re buying a laptop or computer online make sure you add on all the shipping costs to the purchase price.

Prices may vary between computer models because of the quality of the parts, the marketing costs for the manufacturer and the quality of building it.

If you find a cheap computer model or cheap laptop, find out if the parts are refurbished or used. This has been an ongoing problem in the computer industry even in name-brands.

Check the brand names of the sound and video cards in the computer to see if they are lower quality brand names.

Make sure you get a warranty and especially for any computer purchase that is not in a box.

These tips will help you get the best deal on a computer or laptop .But keep in mind that in some situations you get what you pay for. Check out everything before buying online or offline. Again it’s important to pay a little more and get a computer you trust that will be less likely not to have a hard drive crash.

Spyware Crack - The Moral, The Legal, And Everything In Between

Posted by Allthingz in Security

Everyone downloads from the Internet nowadays; in fact it is one of the most popular online activities. If you use reputable download sites such as download [dot] com or CNet, and pay for your software, or you use sites that offer freeware or shareware, then, legally at least, you are safe.

There are however a growing number of sites offering illegal software downloads, spyware crack and other illegal methods of obtaining commercial paid for software. There is an increasing trend at the moment for downloading software that is essential for the healthy running of your computer such as spyware cracks and downloads.

Before writing this article, I Googled “Spyware Doctor Crack” and found 375,000 results. This ironic thing is that Spyware Doctor allows the user to clear any and all associated malware from their system and will protect your computer from spyware and adware, but one of the easiest ways to get your computer infected with a virus or trojan is to download the spyware crack that only might give you a full working version of the program and save you the few dollars it costs to purchase the software legally.

Using P2P sites such as Kazaa or Limewire to download spyware cracks, keygens or serial numbers is not only illegal, but it is morally and ethically wrong as well. These actions carry legal penalties if you are caught (OK, the chances of getting caught are still very slim), but if you do this on a regular basis you are greatly increasing your chance of getting caught, as more and more businesses are taking a stand against this form of piracy, and are prosecuting repeat offenders.

While I personally believe it is wrong to download spyware cracks and other illegal software, it is not my job to speak on behalf of the multi-million dollar software industry. My main concern about illegal downloads is the damage it can, and if you do it regularly it almost certainly will, do to your computer.

P2P downloads will often have all forms of malware bundled in with the program you download, so in avoiding paying a few bucks by downloading a spyware crack, you could end up causing hundreds of dollars worth of damage to your computer, or worse still, you could end up losing all your personal data depending on exactly what it is you unknowingly download.

If you still want to download illegal software, there are thousands of sites you can visit. I’m not going to list them here, but try Googling Spyware Doctor Crack like I did and you will have 375,000 pages to make a start with. Before you do though, try to take some precautions first; AVG free has an excellent link scanner that will tell you if the site is known as dangerous (out of interest, 5 of the first 10 pages from my “spyware doctor crack” search were flagged as dangerous sites).

Knowing that there is a real risk to your computer from these downloads, I am hoping that you can see that it is just not worth the risk. Sure you would only be doing what many others are doing, but that doesn’t make it either safe or right to do - by avoiding illegal software, you will not only be keeping your own computer safe, but also the computers of your friends and family by not passing on the viruses you might pick up.

The Author’s website Spyware Refuge features articles, tips and advice about keeping your computer spyware free. You can also read about the pro’s, but mainly the con’s of downloading Keygens, Spyware Crack, or Serial Numbers for illegal downloads.

Examining The Limitations Of Current Version Control Systems

Posted by Galway in Software

Since the late 1980s there was one open source code version control system, the Concurrent Versions System [CVS] developed by the Dutch computer scientist Dick Grune. Despite some flaws in CVS it remained the leading version control system purely due to a lack of alternatives.

This was until 2000 when CollabNet Inc contacted Karl Fogel, the author of Open Source Development with CVS, to collaborate on a programme that would match the same development features as CVS but without duplicating the flaws.

Interest spread rapidly and a community of active developers evolved mainly due to widespread frustration with the existing flaws and limitations of CVS. On 31st August 2001 the developers of Subversion stopped using CVS to host Subversions source code. Subversion was self-hosting and more importantly it was free.

So what is Subversion? Effectively it is a system which manages files and directories, allowing users to make changes to data whilst keeping a retrievable record of data changed; alledgedly the same as CVS however focussing on the development of the weaknesses prevalent in the aforementioned system. I decided to put it to the test.

These alledged weaknesses of CVS included: the inability to version the moving or renaming of files and directories, no versioning of symbolic links, limited support for Unicode text-files, no atomic commit and expensive branch operations.

One of the major improvements I found had been developed was the three-dimensional file system which allows multiple revisions to be made to the same file whilst maintaining a compact file size.

Previously where files were revised often the file size was high and moving large files around the system was impractical. Now each file-system has its own root which manages the data of each revision, meaning that revisions do not require additional storage space.

I found other benefits of Subversion are that it tracks changes to entire directories as opposed to individual files. File histories are started from fresh each time a new file or directory is created even if it shares a name with another file or directory.

The atomic commits feature is usefeful and enables developers to construct changes, sending all modifications to the repository in bite-size fragments, preventing problems previously occurring when only a portion of a set of changes were successfully sent to the repository.

I found that properties are versioned just as file contents, enabling me to create and store property values over time and there is a choice of network layers simplifying the implementation of new network mechanisms.

I also found the data handling is more consistent due to the usage of a binary differencing algorithm when dealing with file differences, which works identically whether dealing with binary or text. Branching and tagging has been made more effective and the system itself has been made more compatible with other applications and languages.

Subversion is not without its own problems. I found the file directory and rename operations caused some confusion to the system as it makes a copy of the new name and a delete of the old name whilst maintaining the same history. This can cause confusion when files are moved and modified in the same commit.

Also it lacks some administration and management features and stores additional copies of data on the local machine, potentially causing problems for big projects. However the system is free where its predecessor was a proprietary system, so can be downloaded, modified and distributed under free software licence.

The home of Subversion is on the website Tigris and although the open-source community does not provide binary I found that these can be downloaded from volunteers and CallobNet.

Shaun Parker is a leading developer in open-source code and recommends Subversion after years of development.

Free Spyware Removal - The Truth Revealed!

Posted by Pmcdonald in Spyware and Viruses

Do free spyware removal tools really work? Are they effective enough to keep your computer clean and protect you from the constant bombardment of spyware and adware all of us face as Internet users?

Contrary to what most people think, the answer is absolutely not.

Here is a quick fact - industry experts estimate that over 90% of all Internet users will get infected with spyware at some point. Given that fact, it is becoming paramount that we properly protect ourselves and unfortunately, the truth about free spyware removal tools is that they are nowhere near as effective as software that might cost you a measly $30 to download.

Most Internet users simply do not understand the difference between free spyware removal tools and the ones that cost money because if they did, they wouldn’t think twice about opting for paid software versus thinking they can get by with the freebies. There is an absolutely huge difference between the methods that free and paid spyware removal tools use.

Free tools rely on historical observation your computer’s operating system and registry. In a nutshell, it scans known locations where spyware installs itself and then examines the files and entries to determine if any changes have taken place and parses those findings to determine if an infection is present.

The problem with this type of detection is twofold. First, the software may, and often does report a false positive - which means that it sometimes reports legitimate files and registry entries as an infection and in some cases if these files are deleted this can cause even more harm to your computer and can even render it unusable.

The second problem is that free tools fail to detect a large number of infections, including many of the newest spyware that has been written simply because of the dynamic nature of programming and hackers finding more and more loopholes in software and applications. This can result in many of the most dangerous spyware applications ignored and left running on your computer. With paid spyware removal tools, you rarely see this at all because the manner in which they detect and remove spyware is much different.

Most paid spyware removers are more effective than the free ones because they rely on a database of known spyware programs when scanning your computer. What this means is that instead of simply looking for changes, the software will match each file scanned against a database to determine if it is a legitimate file or if it is spyware. This is important because it reduces the amount of false positives reported but even more importantly, it greatly increases the accuracy of infections detected and removed which means a higher level of protection for users.

Another important factor to consider is that paid spyware removal tools put much of the money they take in from sales back into research and development of their database and many of the top vendors update their databases at least a couple of times per week and allow you to download those updates for free so you are always up to date in being protected from even the most recent of spyware programs.

So the next time you come up with a spyware infection, and you will, you’ll probably want to think about whether it is worth the $30 investment to get a proven and effective spyware removal tool or just use the free tools. If you choose the second option, be prepared to fight a never ending battle where you’ll always be fighting popups, always suffering from a slow computer, and constantly putting yourself at a higher risk for identity theft.

From my perspective, the choice is a no-brainer.
