Great Ways To Donate Your Books

Posted by Vgevge in Books

Books make a great companion. However, like any long relationship, it takes efforts to keep it going and strong. Admit it, you tend to ignore them when it comes to their upkeep. A great collection that took time and efforts to build up could end up in unkempt mess and a sorry physical state. Definitely not a welcome feature for your book collection that could contain many a fond memory. Instead, try donating the books.

Donating your books can be done in a number of ways.

1. Donate locally: Books can be donated at the local libraries. However, these days many libraries do not accept such donations. Still, it is possible to find one in your neighbourhood that accepts books in donation. Usually books in electronic form such as audio and video CDs, tapes, videos, or DVDs are preferred.

2. Through various websites: A number of websites deal with book donations.

The following is a list of some such websites:

JustGive: You can get information about the places where you can donate almost anything, including books, for a charity.

BookCrossing: This unique site encourages making books available to anyone interested in reading it, by following a pattern wherein a book is left in a public space for anyone to pick up and read. Your books could thus find a better way to get into circulation and actual reading, than their present solitary confinement.

PaperBackSwap: You can mail the books here and get credits that you can use to get the books you want. Usually a book is charged a little over $2 for the postage. The details are available on the website.

There are other helpful sites as well that support book donating, such as Freecycle, Craigslist, etc.

3. Through various programs: Certain organizations run programs that accept books as donations as part of their charity drive. The following programs are helpful if you want to donate your books for a good cause:

FOLUSA: These days FOLUSA is seeking donations to restore the libraries in hurricane and other natural disaster-hit areas. The books to be donated could be shipped to FOLUSA, the contact details are available on the website.

Vietnam Veterans Association: The additional benefit of this organization is that it provides a pick up and delivery service as well. Of course, this service is available in certain areas only and the maximum number of titles you can donate at a time are limited. They also have a system to collect such books on a monthly basis.

Housing Works in NYC: Primarily, this site works for homeless people and AIDS patients in NYC. You can send your books to this group.

Through book-donating charity NGOs: These organizations accept old or new college, graduate or professional level textbooks or study material in English that are provided to the needy students. You can find out more information on the Internet.

Books Through Bars: You can donate your books to prisoners through this program. It is necessary to make sure the kind of reading material you are donating is acceptable as per the regulations of the particular prison.

Donate your books if they have become more of a liability than an asset. Make way for your hitherto unwanted and isolated collection to bring delight in someone else’s life. Help spread the light of learning and warmth of reading pleasure.

A Better Way To Read Your Favorite Books

Posted by Rchudej1 in Reviews

Audio books are sometimes the better way to “read” books. For people with a busy life style it is the only way they can take in books. They will listen to these audio books while driving and while doing household chores, and some people listen to audio books while working out.

When audio books were first created they were not created as a way for busy people to read. They were created to help blind people that could not read print. This occurred in the year 1931. There were audio books that were created for a project called “Books for the Adult Blind Project”.

The American foundation for the blind first created audio books in 1932. In the year 1932 the first machine that allowed mass production was created and from that point on there were plenty of audio books created.

In 1935 the United States government approved a program for blind adults to be mailed free audio books and this was called the Blind Project.

Later on in the years with the popularity of the cassette tapes and recorders, the popularity of audio books also grew. They were made more readily available for people to get.

In the year 1970 the Books on Tape program started to rent audio books to people. This started a craze of audio books and by the mid 1980’s there were many audio book publishers. The business grew huge and now there are awards for audio books and a very big ceremony for it.

With the invention of CDs and MP3s the popularity of audio books has once again risen. People can download audio books off the internet for a few dollars and put it on their iPods and mp3 players. This enables them to listen to the audio books at any time it is convenient for them. Audio books are no longer only for the blind of the world.

Audio books not only come in the traditional books but also there are many top best sellers of the day. Self help tapes and CDs are also a very popular branch of the audio book world. People will listen to these items while on a long commute to and from work to help pass the time and make the most of their precious little time.

With all of the things that people must do each day from cook dinner to walking the dog and everything in between it is no wonder that the popularity of audio books has grown. We have become a society of people on the go. What better way for someone to read a book then to listen to it being read or told to them while they are going for a peaceful jog or a while waiting for the little ones practice to be over and on the way home.

Audio books are an industry that has seriously grown over the years. From people that are very young who cannot read yet to people who are elderly and have trouble seeing, audio books can be a blessing to them and that is why they are so popular.

Whether you are someone who once loved to read many books and because of failing eye sight you can no longer read a book without seriously straining your eyes or maybe not even being able to see the words at all or someone who has not learned to read yet an audio book will be helpful to you.

Audio books have many different types of people who use them and for many different reasons. Although they started out to help blind people read books and to this day are still used for the same reason, they also allow other people with needs to read books.

Taking Care Of Your Antique Books

Posted by Vgevge in Books

The word antique comes from the Latin word ‘antiquus’ meaning old. Antiques represent a bygone era of society and are desirable due to their age, condition, rarity, and craftsmanship. Antique items are highly valued for their utility, appeal and social acceptance. People are ready to pay a high price for perfectly maintained antiques and evidence for this can be gauged from the prices that dealers, auction houses, and brokers charge.

Apart from adding to the aesthetic value of your home, antiques are considered a good investment for fetching returns many times over the purchase price. It helps to know ways to take care of your valuable antiques, especially the ones that are extremely vulnerable, such as antique books.

Taking Care of Antique Books:

Knowing the parts of a book is important in taking good care of your valuable antique books. The spine of the book is the most sensitive and vulnerable part of the book. It is the binding that joins the front and rear covers of the book. Pages of the book are hinged to the spine and it is the thinnest and the most sensitive part of the book.

Leather bound books need special care to prevent the leather from becoming brittle and eventually cracking. The quality of the original leather, age of the skin and tanning process used are important factors to consider. Generally, leather produced before the 17th century is finer and usually longer lasting than leather produced after the 17th century. Modern leathers deteriorate much faster due to air pollutants and light. Relative humidity below 40% will dry up the leather and make it brittle and eventually crack; high humidity above 68% will hasten the chemical deterioration of the leather.

Store the book away from bright lights to prevent leather covers from fading and occasionally apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly - this will prevent the leather bound books from drying and cracking.

Humidity is another important factor responsible for the deterioration of antique books. It is advisable not to store the books in the basement or the attic, as both places experience heavy fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels during summer and winter. Also, the basement is likely to get flooded during heavy rains. Temperature in the range of 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal.

Low humidity will make the paper dry and brittle, and will tear while you are turning pages, whereas high humidity will cause paper swelling and warping. Mold spores are present in the air and dust. Mildew or molds are fungus and they thrive in humid and warm environments. High relative humidity encourages the growth of mold, causing serious damage to the book as molds digest the material. This will lead to staining and loss of strength. It is recommended that antique books be stored in a clean and dry place away from bright lights.

The covers of the book should be protected with transparent material. Acetate can be used to cover books, as it is both transparent and stable. In the unfortunate instance where the cover of your antique book comes off, please seek professional help. Trying to repair it yourself may cause further damage to the book.

Antique books are a valuable investment and you are advised to take good care of them.

The Magic Of Harry Potter

Posted by Vgevge in Children's Books

In the fictional series of Harry Potter that was created by J.K. Rowling, magic is depicted as a natural force, which can be used to overrule the basic laws of nature although it is approached entirely scientifically. In the Harry Potter series, there are a number of magical creatures - and a few ordinary creatures - which demonstrate magical properties, like the owls used to deliver posts. There are also a few objects that are imbued or enhanced with magical power. A few humans in the series that are able to perform magic have been referred to as wizards and witches in contrast to other non magical Muggles.

This magic is just the norm in the children of couples having magical powers and is less in those of the Muggles. There are also exceptions like those who are unable to perform magic although being born to magic powered parents, called as Squibs, whereas a wizard or witch that is born to the Muggle parent is called as Muggle-born or Mudblood. The Muggle-born are very common in the series, whereas the Squibs are very rarely shown, which is reflected by the size of Wizarding and Muggle populations.

In today’s world, Harry Potter is the most famous fictional young hero in the series of Harry Potter. The series also includes a book for all their Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling of Britain. The books include the tale of an orphan, Harry. The books begin with his first years as a ward of a wicked uncle and aunt, to his enrollment in the school of wizards and the harrowing and exciting adventures that follow. This captivating series has become almost as popular amongst adults, as with the kids. Although these books have raised the concern of a tiny vocal minority, who mention some of the violent content and the evil characters like the witchcraft as the cause for alarm, for the most part it has been excitedly embraced by parents and also the educational community.

The magic of Harry Potter can also be incorporated as a great teaching method. There are various guides that have been published by the same Harry Potter author that include various guidelines on our daily life. There are chapters included in the learning guides like ’standing out to our enemies requires a great deal of bravery, but just as much to stand out for our friends’. Apart from this, there are also Harry Potter Magic puzzles that let you share a little of Harry’s supernatural powers among friends. There are also various other means of learning from the magical land of Harry Potter like bringing out the bravery yet being polite among the crowd. However, you can include Harry Potter learning guides only after your parents have recommended the same, as there are a few parents who have a different opinion on the themes of wizardry and magic, and not all parents appreciate it.

All said and done, there’s no denying that the magic of Harry Potter has become part of many.

Why Should You Listen To Download Audio Books?

Posted by Rchudej1 in Reviews

There are many different types of audio books around these days, literally something for everybody. Whether you prefer to be engrossed in a spooky tale, a romantic love story, a side-splitting comedy or a gritty crime story, there are thousands of audio books that you can choose from.

There is a lot of difference between reading and listening. Listening makes you feel that you are there and you can enjoy the story more. Perhaps, listening to audio books can bring out the best in books compare to watching films that based on the same books. You can relate to stories in books better using your imagination, something that cannot transfer from books to films (acting, directing, and mostly censoring of films make films somewhat distort from their original books.) If you have never tried an audio book, you really should give it a try!

In some ways, audio books are even better than traditional books. If you want to buy a particular book, you have to traipse around the shops trying to find it or order it on the phone or online and then sit at home awaiting the postman. With an audio book, you can download it immediately. You can decide what book you want to listen to and be listening to it within minutes. You can relax, shut your eyes (something else you can’t do with a conventional book!) and be absorbed in the story. Many audio books feature sound effects so you feel like you are really there.

You can play audio books over and over again and it does not get scruffy like a conventional paper book. An audio book can tell a story much better than a printed book. Imagine hearing a book being read by its author who is reading his words like they were meant to be heard. The characters really come to life in an audio book. If you lend someone a book, you might not get it back. To lend someone an audio book, you just need to copy it onto CDs or a DVD.

You could enjoy the biography of your favorite actress whilst walking the dog or washing the floor. You could listen to a gritty crime drama while driving home from work or in your house. You can relax wherever you are and enjoy your audio book and you can listen in total privacy on your headphones.

There are many other types of audio books apart from fiction. You can learn a foreign language, for example, using an audio book. A conventional book does not explain properly how a word is supposed to be pronounced. You could brush up on some Greek phrases for your vacation this year or learn some handy French or Spanish. Listening to a native speaker pronounce those words and phrases is a million times better than reading them in a book and guessing the right pronunciation.

If you fancy giving up smoking, losing weight or increasing your willpower, there are hypnosis audio books available and they have been scientifically proven to work. You might want to consider audio books for your children so you can either listen to the story together or have lights out early and let them drift off to sleep while listening to their favorite fairy story or exciting adventure.

When you have finished downloading your book, you can play it on your computer speakers, transfer it to your mp3 player or burn it on to a CD for yourself or as a great gift for someone you love. That is how versatile download audio books are.
