An Analysis Of Genetically Modified And Fresh Foods

Posted by Galway in Food and Drinks

The Prince of Wales has recently reopened a can of worms that had laid relatively dormant for almost a decade. It is of course is the debate of genetically modified crops against natural fresh foods. The king in waiting recently made comments to a journalist that were recorded in which he delivered a scathing attack on GM foods, saying that it could be one of the greatest natural catastrophes of all time.

The regent favours fresh foods from natural crops and claims that GM foods are pushing out small producers whilst destroying soil and polluting water. It is claimed that GM foods are the answer to world hunger as they can be designed to withstand more severe conditions and more resilient to strong fertilisers or pesticides. The Prince does not agree and claims that it is all a ruse to industrialise the farming of fresh foods.

In the 1960s we saw a similar problem in the US under the Nixon administration. Farming fresh foods turned into big business, forcing many independent land owners to sell up and seek employment in the towns and cities. This effectively changed the face of America, some believe for the worse and many of the Nixon advisors were senior executives of the conglomerate fresh foods corporations.

The concerns voiced by Prince Charles are focussed on this occurring on a global scale. As opposed to natural fresh foods being produced by independent farmers for their livelihood, they would be completely dependent on the companies who have developed the GM food technology. This would mean the corporation would be the only supplier of fertilizers and pesticides, the price of which could be pushed up whenever to keep the farmer in debt.

This is not the only concern that the Prince voiced. GM foods are genetically engineered foods which means that their DNA has been altered for a certain purpose. They can be made more resilient to herbicides so that stronger chemicals can be used protecting them that will not kill the plant. Also they can be made with additional nutritional content than natural fresh foods. This concerns the Prince who believes that this could prove harmful to humans and the environment.

He is not alone as a senior scientific advisor believes that there could be some grounds for concern. It is thought that from alterations such as resistance to pesticides, insects could develop an immunity to the pesticides which could cause plagues of insects, destroying the crops and leaving natural fresh foods more vulnerable to infestation. Prince Charles is not alone in his fears as many officials and countries have shared these concerns.

A senior scientific advisor has sided with Prince Charles and natural fresh foods, also in 1988 over 60 countries voted unanimously against GM farming opting for natural fresh foods farming at the 11th annual IFOAM conference. Unfortunately this has not changed a great deal as the lobbyists have been hard at work since then, governments around the globe have been infiltrated by GM cheerleaders.

The Prince has taken a firm stance supporting fresh foods from organic sources for ergonomic, economic and environmental reasons. Fresh foods from organic sources are readily available to most developed countries however with food prices rocketing, many consumers are being priced out of the market. This has opened the door for GM corporations to start a campaign focussed on bringing down the cost of food via GM fresh foods.

Kid’s Party: Have A Taco Bar

Posted by Deepower in Food and Drinks

Know a kid who doesn’t love tacos? Probably not. There aren’t many kids who don’t like tacos. If you are looking for a great way to “spice up” a kid’s party, consider setting up a taco bar. You can even go a step further and purchase a pinata, for the event. Stuff the pinata with individually wrapped candies, small toys from the dollar store, and coins.

Because most children don’t like, or simply can’t tolerate, extremely spicy hot foods, you’ll want to keep the spices at a minimum. But by no means will this lessen the fun. Keep a bottle of hot sauce, spicy salsa, and chopped jalapeno peppers on the side for adults. Make sure they’re out of reach of little fingers who don’t know what they might be getting into.

This idea will probably work better for kids who are able to assemble their own tacos. They will love the creative outlet! Younger guests will, or course, need a bit of help filling their shells. Children’s eyes are bigger than their tummies so most kids will overfill their plates, but that’s okay. The ingredients are inexpensive. A taco bar is twice the fun because it’s food and fun. A way to entertain the kids at the party as well as feed them.

If you have ever visited a taco bar, in a Mexican restaurant, you have probably noticed that it features other dishes in addition to tacos. Although this is perfectly acceptable, for a kid’s party, you’ll probably want to keep things simple and stick with the basics.

The great thing about a taco bar is the fact that much of the prep work can be done before the day of the party. Hamburger can be cooked and seasoned the day before. Refrigerate it and then warm and use straight from your crock pot.

You can also dice everything beforehand and store in separate containers, in the refrigerator. Lettuce, tomatoes and cheese can easily be prepared ahead. Also include chopped cucumbers, green peppers, red peppers (not spicy) cooked corn, jicama, black beans, refried beans, and lemon and lime slices. Shredded chicken and broken up fish sticks work well as taco fillings too.

On the day of the party, transfer desired sauces and condiments into colorful bowls. Include things like guacamole, sour cream, shredded mild cheeses, shredded sharp cheeses, mild salsa, green and black olives.

Arrange everything on a buffet table. Provide a variety of shells, several different beverage options, plenty of napkins and let the fiesta begin!

For dessert keep the theme going with a tostada dessert bar. Tostada are flat crispy corn tortillas that have been baked or fried. Usually they’re not salty so they make a good carrier for the dessert items. Have chocolate and vanilla puddings, sliced fresh fruit, small candies like M&Ms, butterscotch pieces, miniature marshmallows, gummy bears, and of course whipped cream. Children spread the tostada with the pudding of their choice and then garnish with the candies and fruit and top with whipped cream.

A taco bar and tostada dessert bar make for a fun and entertaining kid’s party idea.

A Guide To Catering Equipment For New Businesses

Posted by Galway in Food and Drinks

Are you tired of working for someone else? Are you thinking of starting your own business but do not know what industry sector? Well here are some interesting statistics about the hospitality and catering industry. The hospitality industry employs 1.7 million people about six percent of the total working population and commands an annual turnover of a massive 55-60 billion GBP, including all subsectors. Still interested?

These statistics cover everything from public houses to hotels howecver anywhere that serves food will require catering equipment. Your initial outlay on catering equipment in whatever business venture you undertake can be crucial to your businesses survival during the tricky early stages. This article aims to explore the different types of catering equipment, the suppliers and the regulations surround the industry.

As we are dealing with a massive range of products this will be a basic overview of different categorisations of products and what is best to look out for. The sections we will be looking at will be bar and beverage, cooking equipment, fabrication, food preparation, food service, refrigeration equipment and ware-washing.

Bar and Beverage

This covers any product that is involved in the preparation of drinks such as juicers and blenders, water boilers, coffee grinders and machines, milk dispensers and the actual under bar units themselves.

Cooking Equipment

This covers any equipment where food is heated ranging from light food preparation to industrial ovens. There is a vast range of very specific equipment such as crepe machines or hot dog ovens that might not be absolutely necessary when first starting out. Remember that do not cut corners using domestic appliances in professional catering as they will not last.

Fabrication

This covers any cooking surfaces and ambient storage such as centre benches, micro wave and wall shelves, stands and wall benches. These products allow you to design your food preparation area to your specification making it time and space effective.

Food Preparation

Above and beyond the standard utensils there are time and money saving devices. These are appliances such as potato peelers, slicers, mixers and blenders, chippers and vegetable prep machines. They are more cost effective than hiring staff to perform initial preparation duties and free you up for more important priorities.

Food Service

These products cover the warming and serving of food. It is imperative that this is not where costs are cut and it is a myth that they are unnecessary. Appliances such as chafing dishes, chip scuttles and heated carvery displays are essential to ensure customer satisfaction and safety.

Refrigeration Equipment

These appliances are essential to maintain food hygene. There is probably a more extensive range of these products than any other however some are more essential than others as under counter freezers might not applicable where as large upright refrigerators would be. It depends on your requirements and the size of your appliances depends on your projections, you might find yourself having to upgrade quickly if your food storage requirements are not calculated carefully.
Ware Washing

This covers dishwashers, glass washers and sinks. Again these products are essential to maintain food hygiene and the right investment can save on labour costs and leave you free to liaise with potential clients while the appliances do the cleaning for you.

Whatever products you are dealing with you should remember that you business should grow organically so do not over invest in unnecessary equipment at the outset. Invest in your equipment according to your business plan projections, so that your food storage and fabrication is sufficient to handle the contracts you require to meet your projections. There is a trend in the industry to be overambitious and much of that is down to poor planning.

Shaun Parker started life as a chef in the catering industry and has vast experience dealing with wholesalers of catering equipment.

Sure-Fire Cooking Management Styles

Posted by Ergo_items in Food and Drinks

Many home cooks prefer to prepare meals ahead of time for families to enjoy later in the day. These relaxed cooking management styles will ensure that the homemaker has plenty of time left in the day to run errands and clean various parts of the house. The cooking management styles might be fast foods on certain nights when the family is attending sport events or the home cook will know that meals can be served when the family gets home because a crock pot is cooking a meal that will be piping hot when the family comes through the door.

The method of food presentation might change on other days. The cooking management style might be a buffet service for family get-togethers, and more elaborate table settings might be adapted to compliment the more joyful events such as wedding receptions or showers. Cooking foods for a large number of people can be very time consuming but cooking management styles always seem to get good cooks through it with very little stress involved in the process.

A good cook can have a very relaxed cooking management style if the family is camping out for a week at a campground. The cook might incorporate the use of an outdoor grill to cook meats on and use small-sized cooking pans to cook side dishes in. The relaxed eating environment will cause the cook to employ cooking styles such as self-service on many nights and campers can help with cleaning up by using disposable plates at the camping site dinner table.

Some menus might dictate relaxed dining arrangements and guests will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while participating in the meal preparations. Dinner guests at a potluck might be tasked with preparing a certain dish that will be tasted by many guests during the evening. The cooking management styles will be part of what makes this type of meal so special and many recipes will be exchanged by cooks during the course of an evening with friends.

In a military meal setting, the cooking management styles will be fast and furious. Recruits are expected to pass through and accept whatever foods are given to them. The cooking management styles will be semi-buffet but recruits are rarely given a choice of what they will eat but they will be given full reign over a choice of drink on any particular training day. The military cooking management styles at times are simple and concise because soldiers only need to boil water to eat meals ready to eat.

For a new wife, the cooking management styles might be awkward at first but are sure to improve with time. There will be many evenings when meals are prepared at home but are unfit to eat by any member of the family. The husband will develop a cooking management style that is comforting and reassuring. After trying one of these home cooked meals he will incorporate cooking management styles that could save the marriage one day. Those styles might rely on the take-out menus from various restaurants that promise delivery of foods within thirty minutes.

Death Of A Food Critic

Posted by D_McDonald81 in Food and Drinks

Google local restaurants and it is sure to return a dozen or more sites that host reader’s reviews of restaurants. The likes of Yelp, city search, and active diner, all claim to allow patrons to give a critique of a particular establishment. This is all fine and dandy, except for the fact that the majority of reviews left on these sites are from people directly involved in the restaurants well being, or there competition. That is why the majority of the reviews are all five stars fluff talking about how truly amazing a particular restaurant is. More importantly, of the few reviews left on these sites that aren’t written by the wait staff, the rest are written by someone that is upset because they didn’t order chives on the baked potato, and it had chives. This bipolar combination of opinions leads most people to think that a particular restaurant is the worst serviced restaurant serving the greatest local barbeque. I am tired of trying to get a heads up on a new restaurant and being bombarded with impractical reviews.

All you potential reviewers out there, for the sake of all that is great food, please start being critical of the restaurants you write about. I have no problem if you feel a restaurant is deserving of a five star ranking, I just ask that your comment contain more than “Best Place Ever!!”. Feel free to state why you believe a particular restaurant is the Garden of Eden of Hamburgers. Also, if you’re going to give a poor review, ask yourself, is it because the restaurant itself is bad? Or is it possible that I caught it on a bad day? I understand that poor service ruins a dining experience, but too be fair to others, there are a lot of factors that can go into that service, was the waiter having a bad day? Was he understaffed? Was there a new chef in the Kitchen? Now, most good restaurants will recognize poor service and nip it in the bud as soon as it see’s the light of day, however, it is impossible for a restaurant too not occasionally make a mistake. If they do, give them a chance to fix it, you may find that most places will. And then include that in the review.

Its hard enough to seek out great local small restaurants that don’t have a Brinker chain sized marketing budget so don’t add to the difficulty by posting restaurant critiques that are shorter than three words. Save the world the trouble. Also, be honest with your ratings. Five stars should be reserved for the best restaurant. Not just the restaurant that makes the German chocolate cake you like so much. If everything on there menu makes you weak in the knees, then fine, otherwise it’s quite possible they are really a three or four star restaurant.

For the restaurant owners and there employee’s, do your marketing somewhere else, leave these sites alone. You’re not helping your cause. I am more likely to go check out a place when I don’t see self servicing fluff pieces written on the Internet. Focus on making the best food in town and I promise the good reviews will follow.
