Make Eating Veggies Fun For Your Kids

Posted by Ifoodtv in Food and Drinks

You are what you eat. Whether it be from the health aspect or the outer looks all depends on your diet or food intake. The food intake definitely shows on your skin, hair, nails and overall looks and energy levels.

Every category of food is important when it comes to health. You definitely cannot survive on only carbs or just proteins. Rice or bread alone is not sufficient for meeting your nutritional needs. A balanced diet is really important. This is more so in the case of children. The growing years mean extra nutrition for catering to the growing needs.

Most categories of food I have seen is easy to get your family to eat, it is only the greens or the vegetables that tend to bring in a lot of fuss. This is true with my family, if you do not have the problem consider yourself blessed.

Getting your family to eat vegetables has come to be a universal problem, especially with kids. This is evident considering the number of articles online that suggest methods and ways of sneaking in those vegetables. Yes, I too am trying to suggest a few ways here that paediatricians and experts recommend.

Children are the fussiest of eaters. You definitely cannot put a plate of vegetables in front of them and expect them to finish it. It requires a lot of patience and creativity on your side to make it attractive to them. You have to try real hard as you are competing with established fast food biggies like a burger or fries.

Cooking at home is the best way to ensure that your family eats well and stays healthy. You need to set an example for your kids. If you detest eating vegetables, don’t expect your child to love them. Make eating vegetables fun, and your family is sure to enjoy it rather than finding it a chore or boring affair. The other day I had a friend asking me about how I got my children to eat vegetables. Here are some tips:

-Work hard at it, try to make it a habit. It sure is a real slow process but in the end you are sure to be a winner.
-Introduce new veggies one by one in their diet at a very young age.
-Try to camouflage the veggies to make them more interesting and cut out the fuss.Try wraps with a whole lot of vegetables and meat too. Fried rice with several vegetables chopped fine or noodles/pasta with a variety of vegetables is also an attractive fare that most children like.
-Sandwiches and pizzas with vegetables and meat toppings. Try sandwiches that are irresistible. Make them in the shape of funny faces, smilies or of different patterns.
-Make dinner or possibly every meal a family affair. Kids tend to eat better while it is fun and with everyone else around.
-Try outdoor locations for a change. For slightly older children, inviting friends over can be a good idea to get them to eat.

Food made fun is sure to work with kids. Take out the boredom from food, pay more attention to presentation and you are more than half way on the path to success.

Wine UK - Right Wine In The Right Place

Posted by James_copper in Food and Drinks

During the past 50 years United Kingdom has transformed itself and evolved as a great place for tourism. Although UK is not one of the top produces of wine, the UK is considered as one of the finest in the world. It was in 1824 when The Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA) for the betterment of this fraternity.

The journey of wine in UK has seen many ups and downs. First let us understand the difference between “English” and “British” wines. All wines with “English” tag are made from grapes which are grown in England. All wines with the “British” tag on the other hand are produced in UK, but the concentrated grape juice which is used to make it, is imported from other countries. Naturally quality wise, this kind of wine in UK is not so good. Ideally fresh grapes must be used to produce a good quality of wine. Hence, wine in UK made from imported concentrated grape juice is poor in quality. Along with the wine of UK like English Wine, Welsh wine of Wales is also becoming popular, as they use freshly picked grapes grown there.

Since 1950, UK wine (i.e. English wine and Wales wine) has shown a stable and consistent development in quality and production of wine. Due to this positive development in UK wine (English and Welsh wine) it now serves as a quality alternative for Russian and Australian wines. British wine in UK doesn’t have good reputation and this is also affecting the reputation of English and Wales wines. Although the quality of English and Wales wines is good, they are still not as popular as Russian and Australian wines. Now English wine which also symbolizes UK wine is best produced from Madeleine and Angevine which make a fine summer drink.

According to an analysis, the figures present interesting results. Wine in UK is now consumed more as compared to earlier days. Figures of 1980 and 1998 show that there is an increase of 2.5 % in overall consumption of alcohol of which, UK wine is a major part. Thus in present days UK wine is more in demand than any other type of alcohol.

Denbies is the biggest winery in UK and is one of the big players in the UK wine market. Although UK wine production has a very small place in the world market, it is said to be a big international wine market hub. UK wine market has a record number of wine importers and bottlers. UK wine market also provides a great business opportunity for wine exports all over the world. UK is one of the largest importers of wine. UK wine market mainly depends upon 10 countries for wine import, of which 6 countries are outside Europe. Australia is the biggest wine exporter to UK. Figures in 2004 show 2.5 million hectoliters of export to UK wine market from Australia. France stands second with 2.3 million hl of exports to UK wine market and USA stands third with 1.5 million hl of export to UK.

The increasing number of opportunities has made it possible for women to pursue the career of their choice. Women are turning from stay at home moms to full time career women or even work at home moms. This has however, increased the pressures on a woman manifold. The traditional role of the woman still beckons her to do her best at home even with the calls of a high profile career.

Food is an important part of all our homes and coming home to a table that has wonderful dishes cooked by mom/wife is what the family looks forward to. However, how does the lady juggle the home, kids and deadlines at the work place? How do you have a wonderful spread at our dining table with meeting the deadlines at work? How do you be the supermom and wife?

A little planning is the secret to being a superwoman. You can have a great meal at your dining table and also be the hero at the board room in time. These are some of the techniques that I as a work from home mom use to ensure a smile on everyone’s face at home:

-Plan in advance. It is important that you plan your entire week in advance. With your busy work schedule week days are going to be very tough and so it would be best to chalk out plans for the entire week so that you are well-prepared.

-Do your grocery shopping for the week on your off day and plan your menu for each day of the week. It takes longer to decide the menu for the day and getting all the ingredients ready than actually cooking it. Make sure that you have all the ingredients for all that you plan to cook whether it is cheese for your lasagna, flour for your cakes or chicken for your dinner.

-Buy the meat required in advance. Based on the recipes that you have decided for the week buy the chicken, lamb or any meat of your choice and also all the other ingredients.

-Make some preparations in advance like chopping up vegetables and keeping them ready for your fried rice or getting your burgers ready for that yummy hamburger you planned for Monday night. These may sound like little things but can save you a lot on time.

-Sandwiches, pizzas, soups and salads are great for a day when you do have a very tight schedule.

-Preparing sauces in advance and freezing them can prove to be helpful when you are short on time.

An occasional ready to eat meal is fine for that lazy day when you do not feel like cooking. However, doing it very often can tell on the health of your family. With just a little effort you can add variety to your table experimenting with some quick and easy Italian, Mexican or Chinese recipes. The best way to manage both the home and the cooking delights is by being a smart cook and then you are sure to win the “Superwoman” title with ease.

A Few Thanksgiving Meal Tips

Posted by TotalGSD in Food and Drinks

Food is the center of attention at Thanksgiving. It’s a celebration of the Pilgrim’s early successes in America, won through hard work to tame the land in what was for them a new world. Every year it’s a traditional meal. Pumpkin pie ends a turkey dinner that includes all the extras. It’s also a time when families get together to celebrate history. The food may be similar, but Thanksgiving dinner recipes have as much variety as the colors of the leaves on the November trees.

Food and healthy cooking, even during the holiday season, can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. A sure recipe for disaster is to attempt a new recipe while under time constraints or feeling pressured by the other holiday stresses. The greatest cooking tips anyone can give are ones that let you know that mistakes are inevitable but nothing is impossible so let’s check out a few below.

How about this recipe for a delicious appetizer? It’s a pretty simple Pumpkin soup. Add butter and oil to a pan over medium heat. Add leaks to saute, only the white portion, until soft. Now throw in some pumpkin puree along with cloves, cinnamon, ground ginger and some salt. Now stir in some vegetable broth. Add brown sugar. Use low heat to simmer it for 10 minutes. If desired pour a tsp or so of cream or half and half into the bowl before adding soup and a dash of cinnamon. That soup is a real treat.

Fried turkey is also good. Don’t worry, fried turkey isn’t greasy. The oil is so hot it sears the skin, thus the oil can’t penetrate it. Get a big drum and a propane burner, otherwise known as a deep fryer. You’ll need two thermometers, one for the meat and one for the oil. Fry outside in a large open area. Get that oil hot, up to 350F. Cook it for 3 minutes per pound, until the breast is 170F. Dressing isn’t fried inside the turkey, but spices can be injected into it.

People who love to cook soon develop their own ways of doing things - that includes holiday cooking as well. Almost every recipe we come across, we tweak after we have tried it a couple of times to fit our taste buds. It keeps the food we cook more interesting and more appealing to our family. It also keeps the food we make fresh and the people we feed happy. Try it for yourself. A good cook always experiments with new things.

For some other soup ideas try curried pumpkin apple soup, butternut squash soup, or pumpkin and sausage soup. But there are other good appetizers for the meal. Give cheese wrapped asparagus a try. Both sliced and spread cheese go into this one. One idea is swiss cheese slices with a softer blue cheese spread. Spread the soft cheese on the slices, wrap it around a few asparagus spears, then cook in a 230 degree C oven for about 15 minutes, or until the asparagus is soft. Okay, this way asparagus isn’t healthy. But Thanksgiving isn’t a time for a diet. Live a little!
