Facing The Psychological Addiction To Quit Smoking

Posted by Cscarpero in Depression

The thought of actually giving up your cigarettes may be scary. For some smokers, giving up something they were so used to having everyday can be unbearable.

Smokers don’t know what to do without a cigarette. They feel their life will change so drastically without smoking. How will they deal with stress? Boredom? Anxieties? Some smokers don’t even realize how much of a psychological dependency they have on smoking until they are in the process of quitting.

Knowing that you are as mentally addicted to smoking as you are physically addicted may help you to succeed in your endeavors to quit smoking. Walking into the process of quitting smoking not realizing that you are going to be having psychological withdrawals may decreases your chances of success.

Before you quit smoking you should come up with a plan. This plan should involve on what day you are actually going to quit, the method you will use to actually quit, list your goal dates, what you will do to reward yourself for goals met, what you will do when a craving hits, and how you are going to react to slip ups along the way.

Being prepared before actually quitting can go a long way in securing your efforts to be done smoking for good. You may have to look deep within yourself to make some of these decisions; each person who quits smoking has methods that work well for them but not for others. Decide which the best method is for you by researching your options.

Being addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes is one of the top reasons smokers have such a hard time quitting. Nicotine is a habit forming drug with mood enhancing abilities. Some smokers fear they won’t have that stress reliever once they quit smoking. If this is a fear of yours you need to come to terms that you don’t need cigarettes to reduce the stress in your life. In fact, some of the stress that is in your life as you smoke could be avoided by simply quitting smoking.

Many smokers become stressed when their smoke break at work is cancelled because of a hectic work day. Some smokers get stressed when they can’t smoke in certain public settings or stressed when they can’t afford their normal brand of cigarettes. Of course there are more stresses that smoking causes and most of them are personal in nature. To eliminate cigarettes you are eliminating some very unnecessary stressors from your life.

You may find that you need the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy to help you quit smoking. If this is the case you should research which option is best for you. If you have a severe addiction to the nicotine in smoking, then, quitting cold turkey may not be the best option for you. But, if you have to quit or are determined to see this through, you may wish to consider the use of a nicotine patch.

A nicotine patch releases nicotine into the body throughout the day. You start off on a dosage of nicotine that is equal to what you would have gotten had you smoked. Soon you will drop down to less nicotine and you will continue going down in stages until you are no longer dependent on nicotine.
Nicotine gum allows you to opt for the slow to quit method. In this method you eliminate X amount of cigarettes from your daily routine. In place of the cigarette you chew a piece of nicotine gum. This medicated gum releases small amounts of nicotine into your body through the gum.

With the use of a form of Nicotine Replacement Therapy you may be able to quit smoking more effectively. You may also want to consider joining a Stop Smoking group. In these groups you and others like you will help hold one another accountable, keep each other on track, and provide you with a friend to listen. If you do not have one of these in your community, you could start one.

Another option is to join an on-line forum dealing with quitting smoking. You need to get all of the support you can during this time in your life. Friends and family can provide support as well throughout the day.

Individual counseling is another option, especially if your main addiction to the nicotine is because of the psychological effects it causes. You may be harboring some emotions that would be better treated by a professional. On that same token, some smoke due to depression, it may be healthier for that individual to speak to a doctor about obtaining a prescription for an antidepressant.

Quitting smoking is the best option for any person to make regardless of their reason to be addicted. However, it is best to have a plan of action before attempting to quit so that you don’t cause damage to your psychological well being.

If you are severely addicted to the nicotine, you need to speak to your doctor about your concerns. Your doctor can help guide you as an individual to the best method to quit. It is time to quit letting nicotine control your moods and overall psychological wellbeing.

Treating Anxiety Attacks - How To Beat Your Anxiety For Good

Posted by Peterj4444 in Depression

There are a variety of methods of treating anxiety attacks out there, but if you want to be able to effectively deal with them you must first understand them. Anxiety attacks, which are also known as panic attacks, are incidents of sudden panic, fear, or anxiety that are accompanied by a variety of symptoms, including emotional, mental, perceptual, and physical ones. These symptoms can be quite devastating and people who have had anxiety attacks often say that it feels as if they are not in control of their bodies. Fortunately, there are many treatments out there that can help folks cope with anxiety attacks and maybe even get rid of them.

Medication is the most common and effective way to treat anxiety attacks. Obviously, many people don’t want to take medication for supposed ‘mental issues’, but if you are suffering from anxiety attacks it is imperative that you get treated. Anxiety attacks can effectively shut down your life and you need to recognize that they are a biological issue just like any other medical problem, that it is not something you did that brought them on, and that you need help dealing with them. Many other folks out there are having anxiety attacks and take medication that helps them lead normal lives free of attacks.

The best drugs available to treat anxiety attacks are paroxetine (brand name Paxil) and sertraline (brand name Zoloft). Paxil and Zoloft are antidepressants that are FDA-approved for long-term treatment of anxiety attacks. These drugs can sometimes actually wholly dispose of your anxiety attacks and any side effects will be mild. Some other equally effective drugs you can take to treat anxiety attacks are alprazolam (brand name Xanax) and clonazepam (brand name Klonopin). Xanax and Klonopin are very potent short-term drugs and therefore you should firmly follow their prescribed usage (as always) if they are prescribed to you.

Many people are understandably leery of medication due to medical issues or side effects and want to treat their anxiety attacks with counseling alone. The good news for these folks is that it can be done. Many anxiety attack sufferers have found that counseling without medication has successfully helped them. They say that by simply talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist they are able to understand their attacks and cope with them. Although many don’t want to admit that they have such issues, there is no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed. Your mental health professional has no doubt helped patients with serious psychological disorders and won’t bat an eye at yours, much less sit in judgment of you; he or she is just there to help you as best they can. Counseling can be just as effective as medication, but does not work as fast. It simply lacks the fast-acting biological punch of medication.

There is simply no reason to avoid treatment for anxiety attacks; there is a variety of treatments available that can help you. Psychologists and psychiatrists have been treating anxiety attacks successfully for decades and they can find the method that best fits your needs to help you cope.

How Stress Can Affect Your Body And What You Can Do About It

Stress is a very common symptom nowadays. Nearly everyone is experiencing stress from time to time. Although this is no necessarily good, it will do no harm to your body. But what happens if you experience stress nearly all the time? What are the effects of stress on the body and what can you do against it?

Hair is considered by many a barometer of your inner health. So in stressful situations your hair may be the first part of your body to feel the repercussions. Hair loss is just another annoying way it can get the best of you. It basically boils down to your body being out-of-whack. This is just one of the many effects that stress can have on the body.

Cortisol is one of our primary stress hormones, and is often used to measure the stress response. Stress in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. Cortisol however is required in other processes such as laying down of new memories. But elevated levels of Cortisol affects the memory and if prolonged, can damage the hippocampus, the part of the brain which is concerned with memory. Chronic stress can definitely harm your memory.

Cortisol strongly suppresses the immune system. This means that a person experiencing chronic stress is more vulnerable to colds and viral flare ups. Cortisol, a hormone produced in the adrenal glands, plays an important role in the body’s regulation of cardiovascular function and fat, protein and carbohydrate utilization. When the body experiences stress, Cortisol secretion increases, thus causing a breakdown of muscle protein and the release of amino acids to form glucose via gluconeogenesis, which means you are losing muscle tissue.

Chronically elevated hormone levels shift the balance of water, oxygen and vital nutrients - which skin needs to thrive - impairing its natural immune function and its ability to properly heal and replenish itself. The result can range from excess oil production and breakouts to dehydration, irritation and inflammation, all of which can contribute to premature skin aging. Chronic stress can lead to heart disease or unstable angina. Angina leads to pain in your chest brought which is caused by insufficient supply of oxygen. Chronic daily stress (ie. a few common signs of weak adrenal function are: overeating and weight gain, low feeling of energy or fatigue, irritability, chronic tiredness, oversleeping and frequent immune system break down.

Feelings of being insecure, lacking in confidence, and feeling overwhelmed are also the emotional effects of stress to a person. Feel that tension in your neck, are your shoulders around your ears? The body will restrict circulation in an effort to limit the movement of bacteria and invading substances. Feel your stomach rising and falling. If your mind is racing, count your breaths, to slow down and get the relaxation you need.

Yoga can help you greatly to change your stress level. Yoga also helps to improve body alignment resulting in better posture and helping to relieve back, neck, joint and muscle problems. Yoga is a great way to reduce stress. Studies have shown that daily meditation can actually reduce blood pressure and helps in getting rid of stress symptoms and it is a wonderful way to alleviate the effects of stress on the body.

Can Fad Dieting Be Linked To Depression?

Posted by Bizzero3 in Depression

Many overweight people are unhappy about their size, some may even be clinically depressed. Many people who are overweight or have other eating problems can use food to cope with emotional stress. It can become an addictive pattern just like an alcoholic drinks alcohol to relieve stress. It is a vicious cycle of overeating and feeling bad about it and doing it again. There are varying degrees of this type of behavior. Some compulsive overeaters can be diagnosed with an eating disorder and need professional help.

We cannot claim a bad diet causes depression, but several studies have been linked your mood and what you eat. Some overweight people may turn to extreme fad dieting to try and lose weight quickly. Fad diets why are they bad is because the dieter is usually unsuccessful in a permanent weight loss. If you have a lot of weight to lose, extreme dieting for any length of time can cause a toll on the body. You may become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals that are related to depression.

Fad diets why are they bad is because they rob your body of vital nutrients and may contribute to the development or to worse depressive symptoms. People desperate to lose weight may feel hopeless after another failed diet. Studies have shown that depressed people often crave carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can bring about a short burst of serotonin, which is one of the eating neurotransmitters in depression. They may be conciously or subconciusly trying to self medicate their depression. The carbs they tend to choose may not be the healthiest choice. Their sudden burst of energy will can be followed by a crash.

Medications to treat clinical depression can cause weigh gain for some people and have been blamed for making it harder to lose weight. Some people may not want to go on or stay on a medication that will make them gain weight. If you are a regular exerciser you may able to curb this side effect. One study from a member of The Mental Health Foundation blames the manufacturing and production of food for changing the nutrients in the food we eat and affecting thus our brain. Some all natural dieters would concur that manufactured food affects the brain and mood.

The CEO of The Mental Health Foundation states there is no clinical evidence that diet can be your depression cure. He does state though that better nutrition can relieve some of your symptoms and help with the side effects of antidepressants such as weight gain. Some psychotropic medications used to treat depression really do cause carbohydrate cravings and may contribute to your overeating. Again, an exercise program will help alleviate this and boot your neurotransmitters at the same time.

There is no scientific empirical evidence that changing your diet will lead to your depression cure. However, there have been more and more studies connecting depression to your diet.

There is conclusive evidence of a relationship with low fish intake and a depressed mood. The oil in fish contains omega 3 fatty acids which most of us do not get enough of in our diet. Other vitamin and mineral deficiencies linked with depression are B Vitamins, Zinc, Vitamin C and Tryptophan. Tryptophan is that chemical found in Turkey that leaves us feeling sleepy and satiated after a Thanksgiving meal. There is no doubt that eating a healthy diet and exercising can help your depression symptoms. Crash dieting and poor diet can make you feel crummy.

You can talk with your Doctor or a Dietician and have tests done to evaluate if you are deficient in some nutrients. A dietician can help you plan a healthy diet for you and maybe it will help your depressive symptoms.

If however, you are seriously depressed and have thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else, you need to seek professional help immediately.

Does Being Overweight Cause Depression?

There is never one singular cause to depression but a poor diet has been shown to play a role in the development of depression and a good diet has been shown to lift depression. There are different opinions as to whether your weight makes you depressed or you gain weight because you are depressed. For instance, was the person depressed so they ate to calm their emotions, or did the depression appear after you were already overweight.

The WHO (World Health Organization) identifies depression as the number one cause of disability in the United States. People who are obese are often depressed and so are people having eating disorders.

Diet therapy for depression has been studied since the 1950’s. It has shown that your body and your brain need adequate vitamins and minerals to function. There is little evidence to support diet therapy alone, but there is much evidence that the depletion of certain nutrients are linked to depression.

There have been studies that implicate being overweight as leading to their depression, especially in women.
Some overweight individuals have low self esteem and self worth and use food to calm themselves in a vicious cycle.

Studies have not been able to prove one way or another that weight causes depression, or depression causes the weight gain. According to the Archives of General Psychiatry (2006), the depression and obesity link were equal for men and women.

Depression for some can increase their appetite. Depressed people do not have the energy to exercise. Being overweight or obese carries stigma and negative connotations leading to depression. In desperation people may tun to fad diets that promise to get the weight off quickly. Fad diets why are they bad is because they can contribute to depression.

Trying one diet after another (yoyo dieting) is bad for your system. You will be continuously disappointed because the weight will not stay off and this can lead to feelings of failure and depression.

If you believe your diet is connected to your depression, you can go to your doctor and have some blood tests to see what nutrients your body may be lacking. Your doctor can tell you if you need dietary supplements or not.

Dietary deficiencies are common in fad diets. Poor diets that some people eat regularly can contribute to depression. If you consider all the facts it seems like going on a proper diet would relieve your depression symptoms. Can a change in your diet lead to your depression cure?

A proper diet that would help you lose weight and keep the pounds off are what you need. There are many commercial diet plans out there to try, or you can simply count calories your self. Avoid diets that are less than 1200 calories or promise fast weight loss. Most people can lose weight on 1500 calore diet.

Om a 1500 calorie diet you will be able to feel satisfied. You can lose one to two pounds a week this way. It may take a little longer to lose the weight but it will be worth what you have learned about eating healthy, and the weight will stay off.

The dangers in fad diets involve fatigue, weakness, depression, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Vitamin deficiencies found in improper diets include deficient B vitamins, Vitamin C, Zinc and Tryptophan to name a few.
To conquer your diet deficiencies you may need to see a dietician. or simply go on a healthy diet. A healthy diet includes a balance of grains, dairy products, protein, fruit, vegetables and fats. There are numerous nutritional books out there to help to lose weight with proper nutition. Start an exercise program to quick start your diet and stick with it at least 3 times a week.

If dietary deficiency is the link to you depression and you have implemented a healthy diet plan but still feel depressed. You need to seek appropriate professional help.
