Cholesterol lowering drugs are some of the most profitable drugs ever made. That’s as result of a couple of factors.

Firstly it’s because cholesterol lowering drugs are being prescribed to more and more people as our population gets more and more unhealthy, and higher and higher cholesterol levels.

And the second reason why cholesterol lowering drugs are so profitable is that the majority of people who go onto cholesterol lowering drugs like statins is that once they are using them most people will need to continue using them for the rest of their lives.

And if you start on statins at, say, 35, you may be using them for many years.

So for many it’s a serious decision to start taking cholesterol lowering drugs like statin drugs, and there are many who, understandably, question what the risks are of taking drugs to lower your cholesterol levels.

Because, as it’s been said, just about any drug has side effects.

Statins are in wide use in our community today. And for many people they have produced the desired effect, lowering their cholesterol levels. However they do not come without a price. There do seem to be risks associated with the use of statins, and more and more people are looking for alternative, and more natural ways to lower cholesterol, naturally.

The risks associated with statins, whilst not proven, at least to the satisfaction of the pharmaceutical companies that make them, include muscle pain and weakness, or what is known as rhabdomyolysis. If you look for forums where people can post their experiences with the use of these cholesterol lowering drugs you’ll see hundreds of complaints about the side effects of statins. Of course these forums do not represent scientifically proven side effects, however do demonstrate the severity of the discontent amongst those taking statins with the effects of these drugs on their health.

And the risks of statins isn’t just restricted to muscle pain and weakness. Other side effects could include such serious repercussions as permanent nerve damage, heart failure, dizziness, cognitive impairment and even cancer. And there’s more.

So clearly it isn’t shown that taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol is entirely safe.

But what about the grapefruit effect?

Well scientist have known for some time that eating grapefruit can increase the effects of certain drugs, including statins, and produce potentially hazardous results. It’s not entirely clear why. But certainly it can increase the levels of the drug in the bloodstream, and if you’re worried about the side effects in the first place increasing the levels of drug in your bloodstream may not be the best idea.

So clearly, if you’re using statins, don’t eat grapefruit.

And if you’re not, and your doctor has told you that your cholesterol levels are high, and that you may be risking heart disease or even a heart attack unless you take some steps towards better cardiovascular health, what options do you have?

There are steps you can take to attemp to address the problem of high cholesterol without resorting to the risks associated with statins. Lifestyle changes, including changes in diet, including more fresh fruit and vegetables, and an increase in exercise levels, can all help, though rarely are a complete answer, as much of your total cholesterol is actually made in your body.
And
modern science is finding safe natural substances that can be very effective in lowering cholesterol naturally, without resorting to cholesterol lowering drugs. Is High Cholesterol A Bad Thing! ~ The Lower The Better-Right?

Did you know that every cell in your body manufacturers and contains cholesterol and most of it is manufactured in your liver? Each person produces about 1,500 to 1,800 mg of cholesterol every day. Only about 200-800mg comes from the average diet.

The way the medical establishment harp on getting everybody’s cholesterol lower and lower, you would almost think they want to eliminate it. The lower you attempt to drive cholesterol with drugs, etc. the more the liver want to manufacture more.

In summary, to lower you cholesterol naturally, eliminate refined sugar, all high glycemic carbohydrates and all dairy products. For Some, The Greatest Challenge Of Diabetes Is Acceptance

The number of people in the U.S. and around the world diagnosed with diabetes is growing at a frightening rate. Experts estimate that there are over 200 million diabetics around the globe. This disease brings with it a list of complications that includes blindness, amputation, liver damage, heart disease, and kidney failure. However, according to feedback from social networks for people with diabetes, the list of complications does not contain the greatest challenge for some.

As one member explained, “I honestly have had very bad control up until a few years ago because I simply was too stubborn to do what I needed to do to stay in good health. I ate and did what I wanted to for years and have paid the price for it now by having many complications.”

It seems that for some, simply accepting that they have a chronic disease is extremely difficult. Perhaps it is because controlling diabetes requires a thorough lifestyle change for most who are newly diagnosed. Changing the food you eat, changing when you can eat, learning how to test your blood sugar, being required to read the nutrition facts for everything you put into your mouth, and often needing to begin an exercise routine and establish a weight loss program can easily seem completely overwhelming.

One member offered this insight. “I’ve only been diagnosed about a month, and I just realized that I was kind of in a state of denial. I was more like a robot, just going through the motions and whatnot. I am getting to the point where I am now realizing that this is for life, and it’s not going to go away. I can control it better with diet and exercise, but I will have diabetes until the day I die. That’s kind of hard to wrap my brain around.”

Another member explained her feelings this way. “I know full well that I’ve been cursed. I just cannot accept what has been done to me, that my body has betrayed me in such a cruel manner.”

According to the National Institute of Health, denial is defined as “a state in which a person is unable or unwilling to see the truth or reality about an issue or situation.”

Or as one member of a community explained, “It’s a psychological phenomenon that protects people from situations, feelings, facts that are too overwhelming and more than they can reasonably cope with. People can only manage so much stress, so there comes a time when your mind tries to protect you from mental collapse.” She went on to share her story about being asked by a psychiatrist as a teenager if it bothered her that she had diabetes. She thought it was a dumb question at the time. But came to realize that her depression was a result of her “anger about having grown up with diabetes.”

It is clear that acceptance of the reality of the situation is essential to making the changes necessary to control diabetes. Denial will most certainly lead to complications, pain, and increased healthcare costs. Between six and ten million adolescent and teenage girls and women have eating disorders. More than one million males have an eating disorder and the numbers are rising. Eating disorder treatment centers and doctor spedcialists have become increasingly common.

The three most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. They are all thought to be due to a coping mechanism. These disorders all involve an obsession with food and/or with weight. Guilt and anxiety about eating can cause adverse effects on an eating disorder patient’s health, both physical and psychological.

Over other eating disorders, bulimia nervosa is known to cause fewer bad health effects than anorexia nervosa. This is because the effects of binge eating and purging are less serious than the medical complications of starvation and malnutrition that effect anorexics.

However the effects of bulimia nervosa can be quite serious. Bulimia can be fatal. The dangerous use of laxatives and the abuse of ipecac syrup and the serious effects of binge eating, can result in health conditions that require serious eating disorder treatment.

Vomiting risks and dangers in bulimia nervosa: Vomiting over and over can result in metabolic alkalosis, which is an imbalance in the acid/base balance of the body. These effects can range from slowed breathing (and can include apnea, which means you stop breathing during sleep) to irritability of your heartbeat or an irregular heartbeat. You can get convulsions and go into a coma.

There are some obvious effects that repeated vomiting has on the teeth. The acid in your stomach acid can gradually erode your dental enamel. It can discolor your teeth and cause a lot of dental cavities. While dental enamel erodes over time your teeth can become more sensitive to hot and/or cold foods, beverages and other liquids.

Because of the frequent vomiting you can also aspirate fluid into your lungs. This can cause serious damage to your lung tissue. This vomited material can cause pneumonia and respiratory distress.

Adverse effects of ipecac syrup: Many bulimics induce vomiting with ipecac syrup. The adverse side effects from using ipecac syrup over and over can be serious. Ipecac misuse and abuse can cause muscle weakness and an abnormal, and potentially dangerous, rapid heart rate. Ipecac abuse can cause cardiomyopathy, which is a condition in which the heart muscle can no longer pump enough blood. This has killed many bulimics.

Dangers of laxative use: Laxatives are often used and abused by bulimics. Laxatives are used to quickly get rid of food ingested while they are binge eating. Many bulimics have developed laxative dependency. The side effects of laxative misuse include constipation, dehydration and painful, bleeding hemorrhoids.

Using laxatives for a long time can affect the normal functioning of the bowel and colon. Getting the bowel function back to normal can take many weeks after the laxatives are discontinued. In some bulimics with heavy use, it may require surgery to gain back their bowel function.

Electrolyte imbalances and laxatives: Laxatives can cause hypokalemia, which is a low potassium level in the blood. This can lead to an electrolyte imbalance.

Using laxatives, diuretics, and other binging/purging techniques keep the body from its proper level of electrolyte minerals.

Electrolytes are important for getting the right electric signals in the heart. This is one of the most serious risks of electrolyte imbalance in bulimia. This heart arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat is a significant danger. Heart problems are the leading cause of death in bulimia nervosa.

Risk and other side effects of bulimia binge eating: Binge eating can cause the lining of the esophagus or stomach to tear or rupture from the pressure of eating/vomiting.

Other adverse effects of binge eating include ulcers, and acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus.

These are a few of the most serious bulimia side effects or bulimia adverse effects.
