Patients Require Information Related To Their Medications

Posted by Chiron99 in Medicine

Patients are often prescribed medications for different diagnoses that they may have. Having multiple diagnoses and or aliments is not uncommon. However, in this day and age of specialization, patients are required to see a different doctor for each diagnosis. This is not only time consuming for the patient, it is also very expensive.

Most specialists charge more than general practitioners. Each doctor will prescribe medication for the patient based on that one diagnosis. If there are three different doctors all prescribing medications for a particular ailment, then the patient is placed in a dangerous situation of having possible adverse side effects from interactions of medications.

The main point is that all of the doctors must know what medications their patient is taking and be able to explain to the patient the side effects and interactions. They should also keep in contact with the other specialists, in case one doctor notices a discrepancy in medication prescribed that could cause serious side effects.

Multiple drug therapy should be beneficial to the patient not harmful. Take the drug Ultram, this drug is a mild analgesic that is prescribed for muscle aches and pains. If this drug is taken in conjunction with certain psychotropic medications a possibly fatal physiological reaction can occur.

Certain blood pressure medications such a beta-blockers act on the beta-receptors of the heart to prevent the angiotensin enzyme cascade, thereby preventing angiotensin I from complexing into angiotensin II. Once angiotensin II is formed, the release of a very strong hormone called Vasopressin enters into the blood stream causing a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

These same beta-blockers can also act on the beta-receptors of the lungs as well, causing stimulation of the Para-sympathetic nervous system, (or competition with the sympathetic nervous system) which causes fluid to build up in the lungs. Normally this side effect is rare, however, if the patient has respiratory problems to begin with, then this side effect could be very detrimental.

Patients with congestive heart failure, emphysema or chronic bronchitis should tell their doctors that they could be sensitive to beta-blockers. Beta-blockers or Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Agents block the nerve impulse transmission to the beta-receptor of the sympathetic division of the Autonomic nervous system. These receptors are found in greater numbers at the postjunctional terminals of the nerve fibers that control the heart muscle and reduce muscle tone.

These drugs include atenolol, carteolol, metoprolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, and timolol. These drugs block postsynaptic alpha 1 adrenergic receptors resulting in a dilation of arterioles and veins resulting in lowering the blood pressure.

One may think that the doctor should know this, and it should not be the patient’s burden to have to inform the doctor. It seems, however, in today’s society that they patient must be very well educated regarding their own health, and doctors should pay close attention.

The public is more educated now than ever, regarding medications side effects and its purposes. This may be due to the fact that more people of advanced ages are computer literate and are able to access the many health related sites.

Patients are subjected to an information overload regarding their medications. It is up to doctors to help their patients not feel overwhelmed. They can do this by keeping the lines of communication open between specialists and knowing each medication that the patient is taking. The extra time and effort will prevent untoward side effects and possible fatal drug interactions.

Patients are also encouraged to continue with their efforts in learning all that they can regarding the medications that they are taking and to ask their doctor any questions that they may have. New medications and strict medication regimes are the key to longevity. It is up to the doctor and patient to find the best combination to ensure a long, healthy and happy life.

Bodybuilding Steroids And Muscular Metabolism Explained

Posted by Getanabolics in Medicine

Both muscular metabolism and growth are regulated by the hormone-steroid binding chemical mechanism. Steroids are basically derivatives of the natural hormone testosterone. As such they (both the catabolic and anabolic steroids) will also adhere to this chemical mechanism. This involves attaching themselves to a cell membrane receptor. Upon their attachment to the cell membrane a receptor complex is activated which triggers the allowed entry of the hormone into the nucleus. The hormone can then proceed to bind itself on DNA response elements. This means that the hormones work at the genetic level. It is by this method that hormones, of both artificial and natural origin, trigger the production of exceptional proteins in the cells.

These proteins are exhibited by the physical developments attributed to the bodybuilding exercise. For those who are on anabolic steroids they have to have higher intakes of the steroid in order to achieve results. The above chemical mechanism works for only limited periods of time. As time goes by the anabolic steroids start attaching themselves to the cortisol receptors. Later they start blocking up the same receptors.

A continued use of steroids means that the muscles see an influx in the number of cortisol receptors in a bid to maintain the body’s natural balance. This effect means that the athlete has to keep increasing the dosage of anabolic steroids just to achieve the same effect. When the bodybuilders stop the use of steroids their muscles have an increased density of cortisol receptors. The body tries to lower the production of natural anabolic steroids amidst the increased cortisol receptors.

The net effect is that there is a substantial loss of muscle upon stopping the use of anabolic steroids. This is the situation many former bodybuilders have to contend with for the rest of their lives; and it is only the tip of the iceberg. Anabolic steroid users find it easier to grow their muscles bigger and faster. Others don’t find it necessary to adhere to strict dietary and training regimens.

The use of steroids can degenerate into an addiction whereby the bodybuilder will not train at all without having taken the steroid. This the case even for the more experienced bodybuilders who know for a fact that as soon as they stop using these substances they will in effect start reducing their muscle mass.

Considering these harmful physiological effects that are experienced by these top-notch athletes, it’s a shame that bodybuilding, the very activity advocated for by nearly all health experts can turn into a debilitating nightmare for an athlete. It is a fact that regular training and eating a healthy diet on a daily basis is the easiest and most effective way to keep fit and healthy.

It is advisable to stick to the natural training methods which promise results consistently rather than steroid induced training whose effects are rapid at first but are gradually scrapped off by the negative effects of these agents. Why revert to using steroids when the natural fitness methods are tested, proven and true?

Critical Health Issue - The Growing Importance Of Family Medicine

Family medicine is a medical specialty concerned with providing continuing and comprehensive primary health care for parents and their child. It involves a very large field of medicine that is still relatively a new specialty under medicine in general. As enshrined in the goals of WHO making it a major field of medicine, “essential health care made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community by means acceptable to them, through their full participation and at a cost that the community and country can afford.” Physicians who intend to specialize in this field usually complete an undergraduate degree, finish a degree in Doctor of Medicine and then complete a three-year family medicine residency after which, they will be eligible for board certification that is a requirement by most hospitals and health plans.

The practice of medical for parents and children through family medicine is focused on the treatment of the individual throughout all of his life stages and physicians in this field are experts in common medical problems. They are also commonly the ones who assist in the delivery of babies, adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine, sleep medicine, obstetrics, and rural medicine.

One of the most important studies in family medicine is the history. With the advances in genetic medicine, it is aided with gathering a complete and accurate research history through a medical tree or sort of a pedigree. Similar to a simple family tree, the research of this history through the pedigree or tree includes not only the relationships among members of parents and children and earlier generations but also includes information for each person regarding diseases, age and the onset of the disease, cause of death and other relevant and necessary health information. This is a very important tool in the early study of the diseases and illnesses of the members since genetics tells that half of a childs genetic profile is from each of the parents. As such, genes that may cause or increase the risk of certain medical conditions are also inherited.

Aside from helping the doctor interpret the patterns and history of diseases in the family, the medical tree also is vital for the doctor to assess and recommend steps that could be relevant to a family members health and well being. These recommendations aside from assessing your risk to certain diseases are things like recommendations for your diet and lifestyle changes, treatments for diseases that are already on going, recommendation on the proper diagnostic tests for further study and treatment of the on going disease, identify possibilities of such disease occurring in some members of it, and assessing the risk of passing the disease to your children and future offspring.

On the part of the doctor practicing medical for the family, they are encouraged to undergo continuing trainings that will make them consistently competent in providing the medical needs and be able to adapt to differing patient needs and the changes in medical care technology. This will include continuous training in maternity care, care of hospitalized patients, community and population health, and proficient and effective medical care that respects the culture and traditions of a family.

Chemotherapy Is Big Money - For Doctor And Patient

Posted by Joni4759 in Medicine

Chemotherapy, in its most general sense, refers to treatment of disease by chemicals that kill cells, specifically those of micro-organisms or cancer. Chemotherapy works by destroying cancer cells; unfortunately, it cannot tell the difference between a cancer cell and some healthy cells.

Chemotherapy may be given in many ways. It can be administered through a vein, injected into a body cavity, or delivered orally in the form of a pill, depending on which drug is used. Chemotherapy is sometimes used along with other cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy, surgery, or biological therapy (the use of substances to boost the body’s immune system while fighting cancer).

Chemotherapy was formed from mustard gases, which was in use as chemical- arms during the 1st World-War. Chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer began in the 1940s with the use of nitrogen mustard.

When cancer treatment includes chemotherapy, patients have many questions. More than half of all people diagnosed with cancer receive chemotherapy. Chemo works by destroying cancer cells; unfortunately, it cannot tell the difference between a cancer cell and some healthy cells. So chemotherapy eliminates not only the fast-growing cancer cells but also other fast-growing cells in your body, including, hair and blood cells.

One of the most destructive things about chemo is how it weakens the immune system. The immune system is the body’s only defense against disease. Since chemo has a detrimental effect on the immune may chemo patients contract other diseases not associated with cancer like pneumonia, bowel diseases, allergies and may create many immunodeficiency disorders.

Your course of therapy will depend on the cancer type, the chemotherapy drugs used, the treatment goal and how your body responds. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often given following surgery for many types of cancer, including colon cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and some gynaecological cancers. Over time, cancer cells become more resistant to chemotherapy treatments.

Patients who are better prepared tend to have fewer side effects and a higher emotional ability to handle the chemotherapy treatments. Patients receiving chemotherapy are more likely to get infections. Under certain circumstances, your doctor may decide your body is too weak to receive chemotherapy. You may have breaks between treatments so that your body has a chance to build new healthy cells.

The side effects of chemotherapy come about because cancer cells aren’t the only rapidly dividing cells in your body. Radiation therapy directs high-energy X-rays at a person’s body to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy also attacks quickly growing cells in your body, but unlike chemotherapy, it affects only the specific area where treatment is concentrated. Biological therapy, also called immunotherapy, consists of treatment with substances that boost the body’s own immune system against cancer.

Receiving chemo during childhood also may place some kids at risk for delayed growth and cognitive development, depending on the child’s age, the type of drug used, the dosage, and whether chemotherapy was used in addition to radiation therapy. People who receive radiation therapy before having chemotherapy may notice that involved skin may turn red, blister, and peel once chemo begins. When a cancer has been removed by surgery or treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy may be used to keep the cancer from coming back (adjuvant therapy).

Given after surgery or radiation, the goal of adjuvant therapy is to eliminate any cancer cells that might linger in your body after earlier treatments. The combination of radiation and chemotherapy can further increase your risk of heart damage.

Chemotherapy is usually administered for approximately 6-12 months or until a patient achieves a plateau response or stable disease, especially if the therapy is well tolerated. Chemotherapy can be frightening to think about. It may cause short term (acute), long term (chronic), and permanent side effects, some of which may be severe.

Chemotherapy can have many unpleasant side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, hair loss, mouth sores, Anemia (decreased numbers of red blood cells; may cause fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath) Leukopenia (decreased numbers of white blood cells; may lower resistance to infection), Thrombocytopenia (decreased numbers of platelets; may lead to easy bleeding or bruising), gastrointestinal symptoms, and even heart disease.

There are other options to chemotherapy that are successful in treating cancer but perhaps more important, there are steps we can take to prevent cancer and to avoid the horrible effects of chemo and radiation.

Cosmetic Dentistry Can Improve The Look Of Your Smile

Posted by Anutt in Medicine

We live in the day in age in which almost anything is possible. Years ago it was very difficult and very expensive to improve your smile. If you had bad teeth, then you just had to settle with that fact. You couldn’t go to your dentist and say, “Give me a better smile.” You simply went to your dentist and allowed him or her to do the best they could with your smile. Some people just found it unnecessary to go to the dentist at all unless they were getting their bad teeth pulled and getting dentures.

Fortunately, there have been some fantastic innovations in the world of dentistry that allows even those with the worst teeth the opportunity to have a beautiful smile with the assistance of a cosmetic dentist. We see it all of the time on makeover shows and we’re seeing it more and more in the general public. Here are five ways in which that is being made possible:

- Teeth whitening - Many individuals who have yellowing teeth will go to a cosmetic dentist and have treatments that whiten their teeth. The formula that is used whitens teeth after just a few visits.

- Porcelain veneers - Cosmetic dentists frequently use porcelain veneers to improve a smile. Porcelain veneers are a material that is made of ceramic. That material is the bonded to the front teeth in order to change the color of the teeth, their shape, and even their size.

- Dental implants - If an individual has teeth that are missing or they have teeth that cannot be restored, the cosmetic dentist will use dental implants. These implants are placed within the lower or upper jaw in order to restore a person’s smile. It is not obvious that these teeth are implants.

- Tooth contouring - A cosmetic dentist will use tooth contouring when there is something such as a chip or an abnormally shaped tooth that looks out of place. The dentist does this by removing a bit of the surface enamel in order to remove those defects.

- Orthodontics - Orthodontics are very important because they involve fixing abnormalities in the jaw, the bite, and of the teeth. At one time, they were common in children, but are now used on adults to fix these abnormalities. Another name for this is dentofacial orthopedics since orthodontics involves actual facial abnormalities. This also involves the straightening of teeth through the use or braces and retainers. Many individuals have had braces at one time or another, so this is a very common practice when it comes to straightening teeth.

So you can see the amazing innovations that have come around in recent years, with the exception of braces. Braces have been around for quite some time and many individuals had them as children. However, for those individuals who were not able to get braces as children, there are now ways for them to have that perfect smile. There is no more having to settle when there is a cosmetic dentist close by who can help and do so affordably. How do you think all of these movie stars have perfect smiles? They weren’t born with them.

They simply employed the services of a cosmetic dentist to give them a Hollywood smile. Just look at some of the more seasoned stars twenty years ago and then look at them today. Chances are they are not sporting the same exact smile they were back in their younger days. Today it seems things are a little more “in place” and a bit whiter than they used to be.
