How Natural Treatment Method Can Complement Conventional

Posted by Axa2008 in Alternative Medicine

Though the advancements in medical science have brought us breakthroughs that have solved many problems in medicine including that if treating various illnesses, there are still those who continue and advocate the practice of alternative medicine and natural healing. It involves primarily methods of healing similar to those early days as compared to treatments done in conventional medicines such as administering synthetic drugs and performing surgical operations.

Common natural treatment methods would include the use of botanical extracts from herbal plants, naturopathy healing methods such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, nutrition, physical natural treatments, meditation, massage, relaxation and a lot more as long as they deviate almost totally from the practice of conventional medicine.

Among the most commonly practiced natural treatment methods are the following: homeopathy, herbal remedies, aromatherapy, acupuncture, diet and nutrition and spiritual wellness methods.

Homeopathy also known as homeopathic medicine is a natural treatment method anchored on the philosophy that we can stimulate the bodys intrinsic ability to heal itself by administering very small doses of highly dilutes substances that in bigger doses will produce illness or symptoms. This is called like cures like healing method. Developed in the 1700s in Germany, this natural treatment method has been practiced in the US since the early 19th century.

Herbal remedies are of course the most commonly used natural treatment methods. Since time immemorial, botanical extracts have been used by ancient civilizations to treat various diseases and even modern medicine has recognized it and a lot of medical practitioners now incorporate with conventional medicines the use of drugs that were manufactured using extracts from herbal plant sources. Aromatherapy is another alternative treatment method that utilizes the scent of liquid plant materials known as essential oils and other aromatic elements from plants used for the purpose of affecting ones moods and health through the healing aroma or scent.

Chinese and Oriental medical practice uses primarily the natural healing method of acupuncture. This is a natural healing method whose technique uses the inserting of fine needles to some specific points in the body referred to as qi or chi, which according to ancient Chinese medicine, is where the vital energy of the body flows. Nutrition is also used as natural method of treatment through which diet and the proper food intake play a vital role in maintaining our bodys physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Examples would be foods that are sometimes touted as brain foods such as those that are protein-rich. There are also those that are mood-altering foods and are thus recommended to fight the disabling effects of diseases. The adage An apple a day keeps the doctor away best describes the role of proper nutrition in natural healing.

Other famous natural treatment methods that stem from ancient and traditional spiritual practices where the mind is used and is made to go through a relaxed state sometimes coupled with massage and aromatherapy believed to soothe and take away stress are meditation, hypnosis, and self-awareness practices.

Because most of these natural treatment methods are far from totally declared effective through scientifically proven efficacy, most medical practitioners would recommend that they be used alongside conventional medical methods as assisted by medical professionals. Medical science either has not discovered all treatments and solutions to diseases and even before its advent, ancient medicine has already relied from the most available solutions that nature can offer and how the body can naturally heal and maintain itself.

A Fiber-rich Diet Can Help Cleanse The Colon

Posted by Paully1111 in Alternative Medicine

Years of eating fast food, smoking cigarettes, taking prescription drugs, and drinking alcohol can eventually take a toll on your body, especially your colon. Even if you do not usually feel that there is something wrong with your colon, it is no reason for you to think that it is okay.

The signs that should tell you that there is something wrong with your colon is not only limited to constipation, gas pains, and diarrhea. Other symptoms include chronic fatigue, low libido, anxiety, depression, acne, back pains, weight problems, and high blood pressure.

The colon is the passage way of the excesses of the food that we ingest. That is why, the colon contains a large mass of healthy bacteria for it to break down the food and contain the toxins within. However, if the toxins are too much, some of the good bacteria in the colon, such as the gut flora candida, may abnormally grow and can prove to be hazardous. That is why it is very important for an individual to cleanse his colon.

Moreover, unhealthy food intake and diet is very harmful and damaging. Processed foods and foods high in fat and sugar are extremely unhealthy for the colon. These foods tend to release mucus when digested, which then makes it difficult for the colon to move the wastes for elimination. And with the sluggish movement of the wastes, fragments of tend to stick on the colon walls and eventually harden.

In the long run, the accumulated wastes continually narrow the waste passage which will make the process of elimination more difficult. And on top of that, these accumulated wastes can actually weight several pounds, which means that aside from your overall body mass, several unhealthy pounds are added to your total weight.

What is worst is that not only do the accumulated wastes add unwanted weight to your body, these wastes can become the breeding ground for bacteria. Also, the inherent toxins of these wastes can penetrate through the colon walls and attack other organs and glands.

Colon hydrotherapy is a naturopathic cleansing treatment that is regaining its popularity as a preventive measure for various diseases and as a maintenance treatment for recovering patients. Generally the procedure involves the gradual pumping of sterilized water in and out the entire length of the colon through the rectum. Many people have attested to the efficacy of the treatment, yet many are still hesitant due to the somewhat invasive process.

So, if you want to have your colon cleansed but have not yet decided whether to have a colonic irrigation treatment or not, you can go on juice fast or start a good cleansing diet instead.

A good cleansing juice recipe for the stomach include the following ingredients: 1 bunch of grapes, 1 basket of strawberries, 3 apples, 4 sprigs of fresh mint, and water. Moreover, foods rich in fiber and alkaline minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium help neutralize the toxic acids that harm the body.

Thus, it is good to always include vegetable in your diet such as carrot, celery, zucchini, and beet for their fiber and mineral contents. In fact various people follow certain diet that proved to be appropriate for them. These detoxification diets include the South beach, Atkins, and cabbage diet.

However, before actually going through any detoxification treatments, it is important that you seek professional advice. People with certain medical procedures are not advised to have colonic or other detoxification treatments, including fasting.

The Placebo Effect Examined And Studied

Posted by Ssarkarnetip in Alternative Medicine

The placebo effect is a mechanism where someone is taking a medicine that contains really nothing. They think the medicine that they are taking helps them to get rid of their ailment. The person automatically becomes better even though the medicine contained no real substance.

Many critics point out that homeopathy works because of the placebo effect. Many homeopathic medicines contain no active substance so any benefits realized with homeopathy must be due to a placebo effect. So much does the placebo effect actually help is brought into question?

Some research studies have shown that inactive substances made with sugar or water can help patients approximately 1/3 of the time. Patients psychologically believe that this type of medicial treatment is helping them. These are small research studies and they are certainly not conclusive.

The placebo effect can also be difficult to measure due to the fact that many people can cure their illness just on their own. The body’s own immune system helps to fight diesease and taking the placebo pills really would not speed up that process. However, the placebo pill may make the person feel better since they are inclined in thinking the medicine given has helped them.

Another interesting question is how do dogs, cats and babies respond to a placebo? These groups are not aware that they are taking medicine so the placebo effect does not really exist within these groups. However, the placebo effect may exist with the person giving the medication. The person giving the medication may feel an improvement in the condition within these groups because they had provided a remedy. How much a dog, cat or baby would get better on their own is not know if they had not taken a placebo.

The effects of placebo in allopathic or western medicine has not been studied extensively. A large percentage of allopathic medicine has never been properly research and tested. Most people are not sure how western medicine works. The exact way aspirin cures headaches is unknown today. However, many people take aspirin even though they have no idea how it works.

Homeopathic trials comparing homeopathy versus allopathic medicine usually have come out quite favorable to homeopathy. Most trials generally show that the homeopathic medicine works as well as the allopathic medicine. Examples of this would be a trial of 146 people that showed homeopathic nasal spray treated hayfever as well as the allopathic spray.

Homeopathic trials with placebos are much more of a mix bag of trials. Some of the research studies come out quite positive but others have not show too much difference than the placebo. Certainly many of these trials did not follow procedures as homeopaths would practice. It would interesting to see how some of the untested allopathic medicine compare to a placebo.

A placebo effect may exist in all forms of medicine just not homeopathy. How much a placebo effect can help a patient is unknown? Research does suggest that placebo can be help patients cure their ailments but this is far from conclusive.

The Choices A Dentist’s Patient Has When Needing A Filling

Posted by Charmen in Health

Having a damaged tooth or cavity often means you and the dentist will need to decide what type of filling to use. Each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages and is made from a variety of different types of substances. The various options need to be considered carefully in order to receive a treatment that you can be happy with.

Silver Amalgam Fillings

This is one of the most common materials used to fix cavities and tooth damage because it can withstand a large amount of wear and tear and still last for a significant amount of time. It is not permanent, however. Its resilience to pressure and grinding combined with its dark color makes it a better choice for molar repairs. The dentist just applies the paste to the drilled hole and shapes it to give it a natural feel. The entire process can be completed in a single appointment, but it is reserved for back teeth because of its color. While it can leave the patient dealing with some tooth sensitivity and there is still a possibility of further decay, it is an inexpensive treatment. Some recent studies have also suggested that this material may release mercury into the body.

Composite Resin Fillings

This method works a little differently than other treatments. After the decayed portions have been removed from the tooth, the oral care professional will brush on special glue before coating the first layer of resin. Once the liquid plastic-like material has been applied, a special light is projected onto the tooth to cure the material. This process continues until there is enough mixture on the tooth. Then, it will be shaped and polished to match the rest of your teeth.

Composite resin material is often selected because it is cost effective and can be completed in a single sitting. It doesn’t last for as long as traditional amalgam or gold material, but it appears natural. Unfortunately, it doesn’t guarantee that decay won’t occur underneath.

Glass Materials

Fillings made of glass ionomer are tooth colored and can be completed in one appointment. This material is more affordable than gold and may be combined with fluoride to help prevent the reappearance of tooth decay. This was commonly used for front teeth before other materials were available. Dentist professionals are using this material less frequently because it doesn’t stand up well to pressure and it wears quickly. It is also more expensive than silver amalgam. Experts are currently testing this material to determine exactly how much pressure and wear it can withstand.

Porcelain Fillings

Even though porcelain is hard yet brittle when left on its own, it is often combined with metal to make a sturdy, long-lasting treatment that looks like the rest of your teeth. One of the biggest downfalls to this method, however, is that it is made is a lab. This means it requires at least two appointments and is more expensive than many other treatments.

These options are available to patients throughout the country, including those in Orange County. Dentist experts will be able to talk to you about each of these options and help you weigh the pros and cons of each one. He or she will help you decide which option will help to fix your damaged tooth and match your financial situation while still looking great.

Please Take A Seat, Sir

Posted by Galway in Health

The most important piece of office furniture you could possibly invest in is proper seating. The correct seating that is supportive and, set up correctly, will avoid untold compensation claims through the health and safety department. To get the right seating for our employees we need to understand why it is so important.

The spine is a complicated piece of equipment. It supports our whole body and protects our whole nervous system. As strong as it may seem to be, the spine is susceptible to strains that everyday life puts upon it and it is essential that we look after it well. To sit awkwardly all day in an uncomfortable office chair will soon show in the muscles and nerves running from the neck, through the arms, down the spine and through both legs.

As the back is notoriously difficult to heal, this situation is best avoided. A seat that supports at all the right angles is the most essential piece of office furniture that you need to spend as much as you can possibly afford on. On top of this, the user needs to make all the necessary adjustments to suit themselves as office chairs rarely come custom made in versions that any normal person could afford.

Of course, there are other aspects to the office furniture that need to be looked at for the health of the staff and the purse strings of the company. Desks are important. Without them we would be working on the floor and that wouldn’t do our backs any good at all. A desk at the correct height for the user will avoid unnecessary strain. Get a desk, chair and VDU set up at the optimum angle for individual employees and you should be laughing when it comes to them having no grounds for compensation claims.

Of course, the right office furniture does not guarantee that there are no health issues arising from it, but if you as an employer have done all you can, it is then up to the individual to be responsible and take sensible breaks to get up and move around.

So, why exactly should you get the right furniture? Why can you not just chuck in any old desks and chairs and tell them to get on with it like they did in the old days? For a start, employers now have a degree of responsibility towards their staff that they should not be injured in any way while working for us. How could you possibly get injured by sitting at a desk typing?

Well, for a start there is repetitive strain injury, particularly to typists. Having the wrists bent at a set angle for long periods of time can cause carpal tunnel syndrome - a very painful affliction in the wrists brought on by the repeated bending of the joint.
Bending over a desk when the seat or the desk are at the wrong height can cause trapped nerves and strained muscles that can see an employee off work for months on sick leave, giving the employer a staffing problem.

Deep vein thrombosis is not something restricted to air travellers and has frequently been found in office workers who sit for long periods without a break. This is a life threatening condition and can be aggravated by crossing or sitting on the legs. Supportive seating that does not cut across the back of the legs along with the all important regular breaks to get up and move around are very important to avoid this major health issue.

This all goes to show that the correct office furniture is not something to be overlooked but something that will make your staff happier and more productive.

Kills All Known Germs - Dead

Posted by Galway in Health

There is a bit of a panic on of late regarding the cleanliness of our hospitals. Since this job has been sub-contracted out to commercial cleaners, budgets have been cut and no matter how efficient a cleaning service are, they can only do a limited amount of cleaning if hospital budgets only allow for occasional cleaning. This, it is believed, has led to many an outbreak of the deadly MRSA virus that has spread like wildfire through our NHS hospitals.

This is not restricted to hospitals. There are many places where people are becoming pre-occupied with germs particularly where the vulnerable are concerned - the people at either end of the age spectrum. So, what is the answer? Well, there is a plethora of cleaning products on the market, can we not simply roll up our sleeves and get scrubbing? Well, let’s have a look at just what these cleaning products do and whether or not we would be better off to stick to simple water with steam cleaning gadgets.

There is a huge choice of spray bathroom cleaners on the market for us to choose from and they will all clean and kill germs with adequacy. Unfortunately, most of these cleaners also contain benzene, a known carcinogenic. Others contain a mix of chemicals that react once in contact with the air and can produce severe irritation or breathing difficulties in humans.

So, just how bad is exposure to cleaning products? Well, research has found that even if a pregnant mother is regularly breathing in cleaning products, or the child is exposed to it at a young age, this can extensively raise the chances of the child developing asthma. Sounds like a good reason not to do housework if you ask me!

There is an alternative. There are cheap, simple gadgets on the market that require nothing more than water. They then heat this water to steaming temperatures and this steam is then applied to the necessary area.

So how come if water can do the job, we are bombarded with all these chemicals that we are told we cannot do without and that if we don’t our kids are going to be consuming more bugs than food? Well, as with many things, it’s simply a marketing ploy. Of course they are not going to shout about the benefits of steam cleaning because that wouldn’t sell their products.

So what are the benefits? Steam cleaning is extremely efficient. It can kill germs, remove dirt, grease and ingrained grime with little effort. It will not release harmful chemicals to be breathed in and it will have absolutely no detrimental effects on the health of the user. It does everything that a commercial cleaner claims to do but without harming the environment, without harming unborn babies and without contributing to asthma or cancers.

Steam cleaning is becoming a big thing in restaurants due to its ability to cut through grease. Grease is notoriously difficult to remove, particularly after it has been baked on, yet steam will remove it relatively quickly. It is a good method to employ in commercial kitchens as it leaves no residue and no smells to contaminate food. It also leaves a kitchen meeting the standards of health and safety officials.

Steam cleaning can also be used in the domestic home and it an excellent cleaning method for those who have the environment in mind.
