The 1900’s History Of Stamps

Posted by Vgevge in Collecting

The understanding and knowledge of all the stamps of the past will enable stamp collectors to realize the beauty of this amazing art. The knowledge of when the first stamp was created will help stamp collectors know when this fine hobby began, and it will allow collectors to realize the great history of this awesome art of stamps.

The 1900s started off with the United States issuing stamps in booklet form during the year 1900. New Zealand were the first to use meters to pay postage in 1904 and the first coil stamps, which were sold in rolls were issued in 1908. On May fifteenth of 1918 special stamps were issued to indicate prepayment of mail that was being carried by air, which cost twenty-four cents. The very first airmail flight was flown by Army pilots that was linked from Washington DC and New York City to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

During the 1920s, the news of stamps being valuable really caught on and began encouraging individuals to start collecting stamps. The rapid increase in the value of postage stamps was due to older stamps being located in decent conditions. However, collectors found that older stamps in pairs, triples, and large blocks were difficult to locate.

Then during the 1930s, many American collectors began stockpiling United States stamps that were in mint condition with hope of eventually selling their investments for a sizable profit during the years to come. However, this never happened because many types of 1930 issued stamps can still be found in mint condition for close to its face value. It is not uncommon for many dealers and collectors to use stamps that were issued as far back as the 1930s for postage on their letters even today.

The United States issued a Graf Zeppelin stamp in 1930, which is still very valuable today. Captain Garrood Gibraltar, who was the Crown Surveyor and Engineer, produced the first definitive stamp featuring a picture at the request of the Governor in 1931. The first African American to be honored on a stamp was Booker T. Washington, which occurred in 1940.

During 1962, the very first Christmas stamp was issued in the United States and then, in 1964, the United States began printing stamps with a variety of designs. On one sheet the design was known as a se-tenant and four different stamps on the Christmas issue of that year featured holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, and a sprig of conifer. These were issued in panes that consisted of one hundred stamps with each pane containing twenty-five blocks of the four different stamps.

This type of release was confined until 1966 when the Crown Agents Omnibus issued and marked events of international interest. In 1973, the Valentine Day Love stamps were first issued in the United States, and then during 1974, the first self adhesive stamp was issued in the United States. A full scale production of the United States self adhesive stamps began in 1992.

The United States Postal Service introduced a type of self adhesive on their stamps called linerless coils in 1997 and then, following shortly in 1998, the United States Postal Service issued the first semi-postal stamps, which helped raised money for different charities. Stamps have definitely changed over the years, but only allowing better services for its users.

Tips For Storing Your Stamp Collection

Posted by Vgevge in Collecting

When ever stamp collectors get ready to store their stamps they will want to ever precaution they possibly can to ensure that no damage will come to their investments. Professional stamp dealers or any experienced collector will be more than happy to give any valuable advice needed to properly store your stamps.

The Library of Congress has books full of old documents and newspapers, but over the years through being handled and improperly stored many of these valuable documents have begun to turn brittle and discolor. As a collector of stamps this is not what you want for your own valuable collection, so learning how to properly store your collection is a must for any collector. Even if you want to mount covers onto a page in your stamp album you should be sure to attach them correctly and carefully. With mounts pressure sensitive mounting corners or gummed corners need to be used, instead of using hinges to mount these covers. No cover should have any type of residue on the back of a hinge, because this may damage other stamps within your album.

One type of album set that is perfect for any novice or expert stamp collector has plenty of room for the collection to grow with three volumes. Most catalogs today use the famous Scott numbering system and this album set also uses the same numbering system, which makes identifying stamps easy. Your album will be organized with your collection easier and quicker using this set. This new technology allows collectors to display your stamps in a more detailed manner.

Select an album that contains interesting stamp information, instead of just an album with nothing for you but empty pages. Learning the stories that are behind and surround your stamps can be fun and exciting for any collector. Some albums come with catalogs of stamps that have all kinds of postage stamp illustrations and some even contain every stamp ever issued within the United States, which is great for the beginner stamp collector. These illustrations might include many rare and unusual stamps, which are a real treat for any collector. There are even albums that are designed especially for collectors who are specializing their collection in United State stamps, which have fully illustrated pictures and historical detail with guides that help identify valuable issues.

Albums that are three ringed and have a stay flat design will allow your album pages to lie completely flat, plus it will be easy to mount and view your stamps. The collector will be able to add yearly supplement pages as needed to some of these albums, which will lie flat. Other albums that will help you protect and display your investments is the hinge less albums that provide a quick and convenient way to arrange your precious collection.

Often albums have the ability to hold thousands of stamps from countries all over the world. Stock sheets can be purchased to add more convenience and flexibility with handling stamps that can take up to four or five slots per page. This type of album usually have a three hole format that allows the collector the capability and freedoms to quickly arrange and rearrange their collection with ease.

All albums should always be kept upright, unless they are the three ringed type with the flat design. This keeps the pressure from its weight off your stamps when they are stacked horizontally, which may cause stamps to stick to other pages. Although the most affordable method to safely mount stamps is with a pre-folded stamp hinge, however be extra careful because this can damage other stamps within your collection.

Valuable Information For Any Stamp Collector

Posted by Vgevge in Collecting

With experience comes knowledge and understanding that collector will gain and continue to increase as they add to their collection. There is no set amount of exactly how many stamps can be included in a collection, however there is valuable information for the collector to learn with each new stamp within their collection.

To start your own stamp collection begin saving any envelopes with stamps on them. By soaking the envelopes for fifteen to twenty minutes in warm water the stamps will remove easily from the envelopes. Inform your family, friends, and neighbors that you have decided to start your own stamp collection and ask them if they will start saving their empty stamped envelopes for you. Soon your collection will begin to grow and you may desire to purchase new stamps and with stamp dealers all over the world it will not be entirely difficult.

Catalogs and newspapers offer individuals the opportunity to conveniently purchase stamps through the mail. Catalogs give collectors the ability to add stamps to their collection as you wish and even to build a type of wish list for your collection. Some catalogs allow collectors to look at stamps before purchasing them, then to keep only the stamps they want. Then the collector returns the unwanted stamps with payment for the stamps that were kept.

Collectors wonder if it is valuable for them to join a stamp club, and the fact is that these clubs are extremely popular and are an easy way gain access to hard to find stamps. Clubs allows collectors to meet and interact with other collectors, which can save them when searching for particular stamps. Other collectors are also a great source of information and knowledge.

The first postage stamp was issued on the sixth of May in 1840 in Great Britain, but up until that time the posting of letters was extremely expensive. The person who received the letter was the one who had to pay for the letter being sent, but this first postage stamp allowed the sender to pay the postal fee and reduced the delivery cost.

The value of a particular stamp is determined basically on the demand of the stamp and its supply, not to mention its condition. If a stamp is high in demand, but the supply is low, then the price will normally increase. The same goes if the supply and the demand is low, then the price will either stay the same or it will decline. Any stamp that has a high quality of condition will generally cost more than those that have a low quality of condition.

Stamps have not always been printed the same way in the United States, because from 1847 to 1922 most stamps were actually produced on a type of flat bed press, which was a slow process. This was due to the presses only being able to print one sheet of stamps at at time, but in 1923 the rotary press began being used. This process proved to be more effective due to the stamps being able to be printed on a continuous roll of paper. These stamps were longer and wider than stamps that were printed on a flat press. Today stamps are printed a new improved way where an inked impression from a plate is first made onto a rubber covered cylinder, then it is transferred to the paper it is being printed in, which is called offsetting. This printing process is less expensive and more flexible in the production of multicolored stamps.

Collecting Stamps Is The Hobby Of Kings

Posted by Vgevge in Collecting

The world is full of the most unsuspected collectors, but from research I have found that the colorful history of the art of stamp collecting has a renowned collector that has made a major impact on the collection of stamps in his country. Surely stamp collecting is the hobby for kings.

The grandson of Queen Victoria, who would later become King George V, began collecting stamps with the aid of servants who handled the mail at Buckingham Palace. George was born on the third of June in 1865 at the House of Marlborough in London. His father was the Prince Of Wales and later was King Edward VII, who was also the oldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His mother was the Princess of Wales and later Queen Alexandra and was the oldest daughter of King Christian IX Of Denmark.

King George V held such distinguished titles as Royal Highness The Prince George Frederick Ernest Albert. He also held the titles of Duke, Knight, Earl, Baron, and Prince of Wales. He was Lord of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of Thistle, Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, Imperial Service Order, Royal Victorian Chain, Royal Fellow of the Royal Society Of London, member of His Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council, and an Admiral Of The Royal Navy.

Collecting stamps soon became the love of his life and by the time he became an adult he was known as one of the leading philatelists in the world. Prior to becoming king he was asked to become a member of the Philatelic Society in London, where he soon became a very active member then was later elected as the president of the Society. Upon becoming the King of England he gave the club a new name, which was the Royal Philatelic Society of London. He would present parts of his collection to the club as their annual program and this tradition still continues today for members to view his massive collection.

His collection soon turned into the most assembled collections and the greatest stamp collections in the world. During his reign, he had his collection protected and maintained by Sir Edward Denny Bacon, who become an essential part of the Buckingham Palace household. However, King George V often bid on his very own at auction while he was king. At one particular auction he was bidding on the famous two cent Hawaiian Missionary stamps, but was out bid by a San Francisco philatelist by the name of Henry J. Crocker.

Like various other renown collectors he pursued the purchase of stamps for his collection through normal channels. He actively attended auctions and it was even said that he tried to acquire the rarest stamp in the world from the Count Ferray estate, which was sold during the 1920s. His collection contained several one of kind items, which included essays and proofs of the British Commonwealth that only the King himself would have access to.

Today his collection is housed is their very own special rooms at Buckingham Palace and is protected and maintained by Sir John Wilson, who began after the death of his predecessor. His collection is now considered as the Queens’ collection and is always on display at the first annual season meeting of the Royal Philatelic Society of London. At major international exhibitions part of this massive collection may be placed on display for any of those who are lucky enough to attend these exhibitions and catch a glimpse of this famous collection.
