What Every Scrapbooker Should Know Before Buying A Die Cut Machine

Posted by Dhall10622 in Arts and Crafts

Personal die cut machines have become very popular tools among scrapbookers and paper crafters. However, if you are in the market for one, it may be difficult to sift through the different available models to find the machine best suited for your needs. There are a few features that you will want to consider prior to making an investment in one.

1. Computer-Based vs. Cartridge-Based

There are some models of personal die cut machines that, when connected to your computer, can make die cuts of the fonts and graphics that are available on your PC. The Xyron Wishblade and Pazzles Creative Cutter are examples.

On the other hand, there are other die cutters that need no computer to operate, but rather make cutouts based upon the fonts and graphics that are available on cartridges. The Cricut Expression, Personal Electronic Cutter, and the new Slice by Making Memories, are examples.

Of the two types of machines, the cartridge-based systems are the most popular among scrapbook enthusiasts. Although the cartridges can be expensive, the initial upfront costs are, for the most part, significantly less than the computer-based models. In addition, they are generally considered easier to learn. Also, because no computer is required, cartridge-based die cutters are more portable and can be taken to crops and other scrapbook meets.

2. Die Cut Sizes

The size of die cuts that you can create vary significantly among the different machines. The portable two pound Slice, for example, can make cuts from one inch to four inches in size. Hardcore crafters, on the other hand, may prefer the Cricut Expression, which can make cuts ranging from just a quarter of an inch all the way up to almost two feet in size. Before investing in a personal die cut machine, make sure it will produce cutouts in the range that you need.

3. Portability

It is important to take the size of the machine into consideration prior to making a purchase. If you have an area in your home specifically set up for your scrapbooking projects, this may not be an issue. However, if you have your supplies stored in a closet and use your kitchen table to work on your projects, then a smaller model may be your best bet. Also, if you like to socialize while you work on your scrapbooks, and attend crops or meets, or even just lug your supplies over to your neighbors on a regular basis, then you may want to trade the features of a larger model for the portability of a smaller unit.

As you can see, there are a lot of different options when it comes to personal die cut machines. Even if cost is not a consideration, the most expensive model may not be the best one for your needs. Before shopping for a machine, it is a good idea to sit down and think about what features are most important to you, and make your purchase based upon your needs.

Beginning A New Craft Of Altered Used Books

Posted by Vgevge in Arts and Crafts

Individuals starting out in the craft of altering used books may also have a prior interest in collage or other types of paper arts. There are several techniques and ideas that these individuals may follow or they may choose to simply experiment with several types of material in used books and figure it out on their own.

There are very simple ideas that individuals need to follow if they are planning to alter used books, with the basic idea being locating a couple of used books that no longer have any value and are in dire need of being recycled. Most of the individuals working in this new craft prefer used books that are known as stitched books, but still any used book or blank journal will work. The material that has been used on the pages within the used book that you choose to alter is also important. This is because some pages might be made out of glossy paper that will not work with all techniques that you attempt to use or they will not work correctly.

The next step is to determine several techniques and ideas that you would consider might be interesting when completed in your altered used books. One technique to create an interesting display is to use a variety of paint samples and to tear several pages within the used book, which will create a type of layered look. Remember, when tearing these pages to do so at a variety of different levels, because this will make a much better effect. On the majority of the pages that have been torn use a wide variety of colors, which can be colored from paints, crayons, markers, chalks, or pastels colors as well. Some individuals have been known to create designs when ever they are painting such as stripes, circles, and so on.

Some individuals will create pockets within the pages of these used books by using double stick tape and securing them with eyelets, which will help the pages protect the heavy objects that they may use. Another great way to design altered used books is to reveal quotes within the pages from the words of the author by coloring over all the other words with what ever material you might decide to use. One other way is to create a frame on the page prior to the page within the used book to create a type of window or picture frame.

In several altered used books I have personally noticed that several individuals and artists have left a variety of pages blank, while other pages have been colored. When gluing objects onto these pages the individuals need to careful to ensure that the glue does not show through on the back side of the pages, because this tends to look quite tacky. Another thing to watch out for when gluing is to make sure that the glue does not cause the pages to wrinkle up, which several do cause. Some glues, over time, may weaken or even turn yellow or begin to peel or are simply just not strong enough to hold the objects over time. It is always a safe bet to experiment several types of glue that you may have on hand with a variety of material as well.

A Tutorial For Celtic Cross Stitch

Posted by WMMedia in Arts and Crafts

You can use either Aida cloth or line for Celtic cross stitch, but Aida is the preferred fabric because the holes are already in the fabric for you. It is also bets for beginners and for those who may have poor eyesight. It is available in 8, 11, 14, 16 and 18 blocks per 2.5 cm. The fabric count will tell you how many blocks there are in a standard square of Aida cloth. This fabric also comes in many different colors and you can also dye it to your preferred color. Linen has very few holes counts, which is why it is a difficult fabric for beginners to use. However, there are irregularities in linen, which gives the finished product a more unique look.

The basic stitches you need to learn for this cross stitch design are:

* X. The X stitch is the basic stitch in any cross stitch pattern. To make this stitch you first have to make a small knot in the end of the thread. Bring the needle up through one of the holes from the wrong side of the fabric so that you now have the needle on the right side. Insert the needle in the hole in the diagonal corner of the square and then bring it back up through the opposite hole. When you once again pass the needle through the corresponding diagonal hole, you have an X pattern over the square.

* /. This is the half-sticth pattern and represents one half of the basic X stitch. You simply bring the needle up through a hole and then pass it down through the hole in the diagonal corner.

* The Quarter stitch pattern is one half of the half stitch. When you bring your needle up through the hole, put it down through the fabric halfway between the hole and the one in the diagonal corner.

* A three-quarter stitch is a combination of both the half and quarter stitch designs. First you make a half stitch and then you proceed as if you were going to make a full X. Instead of making the second half of the stitch you put the needle through the middle of the half stitch.

Once you know how to make these stitches, you can create your own Celtic designs that you can use for cross stitch. You do need to have graph paper for such a project. Using a felt tip open make prominent dots in the corners of the squares on the graph paper. Highlight every second dot with a pen. Once you trace out your design in this way for the length of the sheet of paper, then you can start doing the same thing horizontally.

Use one section of the graph paper where you have five regular dots and four highlighted dots. Make sure you measure so that your square is even. Each highlighted dot will be the place where the threads intersect, so you can place a small X over these dots. Continue marking these dots with an X all the way to the border but do not mark those that lie on the line of the border. When you have all the highlighted dots crisscrossed, you can join the knot lines along the sides. You will see how they bow out towards each other. Make a double line to connect them to make your circle.

Ways To Create A Sewing Room From Your Sewing Table

One of the things that numerous people complain about is not having enough space, and also not having enough storage area. This is particularly true when a person is living in a small apartment or home, and even more so if you have a family.

Hence, if you are a person who loves to sew, it can feel almost like a luxury to have enough room to cram a sewing table into the corner of your lounge room, let alone actually having enough space to allocate the area of a whole room to your sewing equipment.

For many of us, we make do with storing our projects, equipment and sewing supplies scattered throughout the house, and end up creating a jumbled mess of our sewing projects. Nevertheless, it is possible to make a very big area out of a very small one if we work in a smarter way instead of harder.

Creating an Ingenious Sewing Table

If you look around hard enough, you will find a number of sewing tables with good potential on the open market that can not just save you allot of space, but can make wind up creating additional space by utilizing some smart storage ideas that you can integrate for your own purposes.

Some of these ideas include tables that give you the ability to store various supplies below, as well as above the table, maintaining all of you items in one convenient neat package (very much like a computer desk).

Even more useful, particularly for those individuals who do not have the space for a large sewing table, are tables that are compact that have the ability to expand when you have to use them, and are very easily folded back to roughly half the size when you are not using them. Depending on the space you have available, either one of these options can fit into the smallest of apartment spaces without getting in your way.

Planning Your Own Sewing Table

If you have the money to afford it, it can pay off to design and get your own sewing table made from scratch so that you can make the most optimized use for whichever room you have available. There are a number of different designs that you can work with so that you can maximize the space you have available, which include the design of a U shape, L shape, or and I shaped sewing table.

An L shaped will work best when you are working in a corner, as this will take the best advantage of the space on more than one wall. An I shaped table will function best when working in a smaller cramped and narrow area, and a U shaped will end up working best if you have a full corner or open space that you are can work with.

When determining this, be certain to measure accurately the area in question, which also includes where you will be sitting, speak to a number of different professional manufacturers in regards to what materials will work best, and also shop around for the best prices as well as various deals that may be out there.

But until you do have the opportunity to get the sewing table you’ve always dreamed of, try creating added space in your house by integrating containers that are stackable or boxes that you can store various supplies, to maximize your space that you already have using shelving, and make certain that all of your equipment is out of reach of small children to ensure their safety. Whichever option you end up choosing, treat your sewing area with the care and respect that it deserves by keeping it tidy and clean, as this will make your work more enjoyable.

There are many moments in your life that you want to remember. You probably have no idea how to do this or what you need to remember them. Sometimes you give someone a gift to commemorate a special day. Perhaps the best choice for a special moment is a precious moments figurine? Naturally you will have to learn a few details about these beautiful figurines first.

You’ve probably seen those little figurines that many people have sitting inside their house. These are things that they have probably had for a while so that they can remember what all things have happened in their lives. Some people keep such mementos carefully and remember the things or persons associated with them long after they come into their houses.

If you have decided to buy a few for your house as well, or to be given to someone else, you first need to know where to get them. The easiest method is to try the Internet. You can also try to get your precious figurines from gift stores if you have the time to look for them there.

When you are looking on the Internet, you will probably be able to find all the different types of figurines at the online gift stores. They will have all the different ones that you may want to get as well as newer ones that you may not even have heard of yet. You should also look for the ones that are geared for special occasions such as birthdays or holidays. You may even find figurines for the birth of a baby or to commemorate a wedding that you want to remember. How about one for your anniversary?

You can also find the figurines at your local gift shop. These great little guys are normally found at popular gift shops or at family owned gift stores. This makes it a lot easier to find them for your special occasions and for days with your kids that you want to remember. You should be ready to pay a little more to get your figurines from these gift stores. This is because there is not so much competition in regular storefronts as on the Internet.

When you are looking for your figurines, you really should know which one you want before you start looking. This way you will get the figurine that is best suited for you and your needs. Take some time to find the one that is going to add splendor to your important event. That way you will be happy and will have a smile on your face when you carry the figurine home. This is the figurine that you are going to see on your shelf and you want to have good memories attached to it.

Next time when you think of giving a really solid gift to someone you really care for, go for one such figurine. That will be cherished forever, because whenever the eyes fall on it, a host of memories will crowd in. And the figurine will be there to stay.
