Have you ever went to buy a camera and noticed a little letter/number combo that looked like this: f/2.8 - 5.6? Have you been confused as to what this means and how this affects the pictures you take?

This set of letter and numbers refers to the F-Stop of the lens of your camera, and many people are very confused when they see this for the first time. However, with a little reading and practice, you can come to understand with F-Stop means and how to use it to create and produce wonderful photos for yourself, family, or friends. And maybe you could even learn enough so you could take pictures for people at weddings, graduation, or other events and make some money on the side.

The first thing to know about that funky F/# is that it is referring to what is called Aperture. Aperture basically is referring to how wide the camera lens opening is. I like to explain it using an analogy to your eye.

You eye is what you use to see things, and the lens is what a camera uses to see things, so it can be a good analogy that will help you understand. You can open your eyes very wide, or you can squint and keep your eyes to where there is just a little bit of light getting to your eyes.

This is what you can do with aperture settings on a camera. You can either open the aperture up, which lets a lot of light in to your camera sensor, or you can close the aperture, which will let only a little bit of light into the sensor. Of course, understanding this photography basic of how you can change the aperture won’t help you much if you don’t know what the changes will do to your pictures.

When you open up the aperture, you are doing two basic things: you are letting more light in, and you are creating a narrow field of focus (think everything blurry except right where you are focusing). By letting more light in, you are able to use much faster shutter speeds and freeze action. However, you will have a more narrow plane of focus so you will have to be more precise in your focusing.

One common type of photography that is in vogue right now which uses a wide aperture is some portrait photography. Creating a shallow depth of field will help you emphasize the person you are photographing and let you ignore obtrusive objects behind or in front of your subject.

Now, here is the tricky part of this photography basic. Remember that funky F-Stop number we talked about? It is used to tell you what aperture you are using. But I like to call it a backwards number because the number does the opposite of what common sense would seem to think.

When I refer to a large, wide open aperture, I am actually referring to a small F-stop. When I am talking about a small, closed aperture, I am referring to a large F-Stop. An F-stop of f/2.8 is actually more wide open than an F-stop of f/5.6. While this may be one of the more confusing photography basics, the more you practice adjusting your aperture while taking pictures, the more you will understand it.

I consider myself a photographer, in a true sense. It is becoming the fast food joint of art. Maybe this is what the painters said about photography when it first came out, they did claim that it would be the death of painting. Has digital become the death of film? I know I should be less cynical about the pixel rate revolution, but it seems that photographers that have learned their trade, have made the camera a tool for their art, have mastered the process of producing a perfect picture; it seems to me that these people have had the lens cap well and truly placed on their lenses and have literally been pushed out of the picture. Pardon the pun.

Because there is no such thing as a bad picture, the really talented ones are becoming hard to spot. A great picture nowadays is more based on the quality of the camera and the interestingness of the subject, discounting the skill involved in producing a valid picture with traditional methods. Digital photography however, does come with its own set of skills and this has the potential to become a type of photography in itself and allow traditional photography the room to breathe again.

In the digital arena, playing and experimenting with the settings, as one would with a manual camera, uses the tool to stretch it to its limits. The type of distortions and burnouts differ greatly from film, and the post production of the images is a new type of development process. Rather than being in a darkroom and playing around with development and exposure times, using the likes of Photoshop programmes mean cropping, straightening, saturation, contrast are easily achieved tasks. Full on manipulation and doctoring is just as easy and a competent user is able to adjust an image and tweak it into perfection. Being able to take control of images is a wonderful skill and should be embraced by those that practice in the digital arena to produce posters and books that advertising agencies would envy. The skill is out there, and the application, the digital era has a destination.

When I purchased my first digital SLR camera I was given a great beginning photography tip: don’t buy more than you need. I was a beginning photographer who had never tried a film SLR camera, who didn’t know the definition of aperture, and who basically didn’t know much at all. I ended up purchasing the Nikon D50, which was Nikon’s introductory digital
SLR at the time, and I am very glad I did.

I have spent a few years learning the basics of digital photography and for the first year or so I
almost never felt that I needed more than what my Nikon D50 has to offer. Of course, now I am ready to move up to a model with more features, but
had I paid for those features initially I would have wasted several hundred, if not thousands, of dollar on features I never would have used.

Had I not listened to that beginning photography tip I probably would have purchased the Nikon D100, which was an amazing camera at the time. I would have spent at least one thousand more dollars, had a heavier camera, and had a few more features.

However, today I would still be wanting to
upgrade my six megapixel Nikon D100 to the newer and much better Nikon D300 or the Nikon D3. I’m not saying that those who purchased the D100 back then made a mistake by any means. It is a great camera. What I’m saying is that for me, purchasing it would have been a mistake because I would not have used the additional features that the D50 does not have.
Learning how to use a digital SLR camera takes time, especially if you are a complete beginner in the photography world.

You have to learn what aperture, ISO, white balance, shutter speed, f-stop, focal distance, and
many other things mean. And then, after knowing the definition of those terms, you have to learn how to manipulate them and how they work together to help you take and create great photographs. More simple, entry-level cameras are designed just for this purpose to help you learn the basics.

You can spend around $500 and get a great beginner camera that will enable you to learn the fundamental principles of photography. And the best part about buying a entry-level camera is that you generally don’t sacrifice much at all on the most important aspect of photography, the picture quality. I have seen amazing prints from both introductory-level digital SLR’s and pro-level cameras and many times I cannot tell the different.

In fact, if you read many photographer blogs, you will find out that most professional photographers do not just have one camera, they almost always
have a backup camera, and that backup camera is usually an entry level digital SLR just like the one I purchased.

So, remember this great beginning photography tip: if you are a beginning photographer, then start with a introductory DSLR. Then, when you understand how to use aperture and ISO and shutter speed together, you
will be ready to upgrade to a newer, better camera. You will never regret it.

I was recently introduced to photography by my friends. The first time they encouraged me to join their new found hobby, I was a bit adamant. The reason is that I haven’t put much of a thought about photography and here they are having a camera of their own.

What shocked me is that the camera each of them own is not your ordinary digital cam. They use the state of the art digital camera that was being used by professional photographers. Most of my friends were probably influenced by our friend who had just finished his photography lessons. My friends were definitely amazed of his high tech camera that made them interested on its features. Our curiosity was the first step in discovering the joys of photography. We did not know then that a mere curiosity would lead us to a whole different world that we would never dream of exploring if not for photography.

It started with simple portrait shots. Taking pictures every now and then. It made us even more excited and more curious. We started to practice on how to focus the camera effectively without losing balance and afterwards we honed our zooming ability using the camera. The shot I have taken at first were not that good but after some time I started to appreciate the improvement I have made. The picture that I had taken became clearer and more detailed. After a few days of using the SLR of my friends I started to enjoy what I was doing and finally bought my own. They said this was their plan all along to get me hooked on it. I would have been mad at them back then but now I was more than happy to be a victim.

After a weeklong practice my friends and I decided that we are now ready to embark on our journey to be a professional photographer. After doing some portrait photography we are now ready to advance and make a transition to be a landscape photographer. We all decided to go on a trip to hone our talents and the place we chose was a tourist destination that features a good view of nature, with its beautiful forests, wild life and atmosphere.

The experience was totally breath taking. I could not have asked for a better place to take pictures. That was the first time that I felt something different. I could not explain in words what it was. I just felt it and it was great. Photography made us appreciate the beauty of things whether how small or how big they are. Being able to see the beauty within of every living thing gives you a feeling of fulfillment. Photography did change how I see things. I no longer take things for granted because now I could see every detail and wholeness of everything that I saw. People should try photography more because it would make them more appreciative of things. In this way they could value the magnificence of this world
