Beginning Your Model Train Collection

Posted by Vgevge in Hobbies

As a hobby collecting and running model trains has been around for many, many years. It is both fun and informative and can be enjoyed by people of all races and sexes. It can even be enjoyed by all age groups. The feelings that they get when watching the model train as it goes puffing around the track. With all the attention to detail that goes into building these displays it must be very time consuming and boring, right? Wrong! Model building is actually rather easy to pick up and run with.

The first thing you will need to do is to educate yourself about the different scales that are available to collectors. Some model trains will be much too small to work with if you have large hands. Alternately you would not want to buy too large of one if you are limited on space. Check your available space against that of the scale you have chosen and see if they match. Another thing you will need to decide is whether you want to collect the new model trains or if you will be trying your hand at collecting antique model trains instead.

This will also help you decide whether you will be running your train or just collecting it. Now you can begin to learn what skills you will need to be able to work on building your model train display. These skills can range from being able to paint the landscape to molding some of your features out of modeling clay. There is a bit of creativity involved in the larger scale displays that are normally associated with model trains.

Another skill that you will need to read up on is small electrical work. You will probably be doing a fair amount once you get into building so it pays to know what you are doing. It is true that you might not have this sort of experience when you first start but with time you will find that it comes second nature to you. You will also benefit from speaking with other model builders. They can be a great source of information for beginners and advanced builders alike.

There are several different organizations to this extent and all of them usually welcome new members at any time. They are excellent sources of tips and tricks to make your display look great as well. One more thing you can do is to attend model train shows. You may be able to find one in your area that is close enough that you can take time and attend. You can see model trains from everywhere.

You can get many ideas from model train shows by looking at the different displays at them. You can also begin to show off your model trains as you get more confident with your techniques. Above all you can have fun. Model trains are educational as well as fun. As such you should be able to enjoy your new hobby as you learn more about trains every day.

Making Your Own Model Train Hills

Posted by Vgevge in Hobbies

You have built your model train table for your big display. You have sketched in your entire layout and know exactly where your track will be going. You have even decided to add in a couple water features and maybe even a bridge. There still seems like something missing though. You think and think and finally you figure out what it is that it is missing. It seems extremely flat. So, what is it that you can do to give it so much more depth? You can add hills and mountains to your train display! It may seem like a project that will take forever, but it is actually very simple and quick.

The first thing you must do is to decide the shape you will want your hill to be. Once you know this you can roughly sketch the base of the mountain out on a piece of cardboard. After you have this sketch you need to cut it out and set it aside. One thing to note is that you should make sure that the finished hill will fit in the space you intend it for.

Your next step will be to make newspaper balls by scrunching up newspaper and then glue each ball onto the footprint of the hill that you had set to the side. You need to keep adding these balls to the base until you get it as high as you need it. Make sure that you do not make it an even height. Mountains are never even unless they happen to be man-made. Use many different heights so it looks as realistic as possible.

It is also a good idea to use ball of different sizes in order to help simulate real terrain. Next tear up several different sheets of newspaper up into strips and set them aside. You will then need to mix up a solution that will be used as a glue base. This needs to be made up of fifty percent water and fifty percent contact cement. Dip the strips that you tore up one or two at a time into the glue solution. You will then need to take this and lay it across it the paper balls and softly tap it into place. Keep up this process until the entire hill is covered. Start with the base of the hill and work your way up.

After you have it completely covered then you should let it dry. Once dry you can then add another layer if you wish in order to make the hill much more stable. Again, allow it to dry. After it dries you then customize it as you need to. You can now add all the details that you wish. Begin by painting your model.

Mix up your colors for the paint job while keeping in mind the colors of actual dirt and hills. It should be a mix of reds, browns, black, and greens. Do not blend these totally. You will want it to be streaked and a mash of colors. After you get the hill painted you can then apply your grass and any false dirt that you may want to add. You can also glue pebbles in place to simulate boulders and rocks.

Creating Your Model Train Layout

Posted by Vgevge in Hobbies

Do you have a love of model trains? If you are new to collecting trains and are looking for a few points on how to choose what sort of parts and accessories you should be buying then you are in the right place. There are so many different choices as to what you can use and how you can go about installing everything that you will be able to create your own layout or perfectly recreate the one you are trying to emulate.

The first thing you will need to do is to figure out is what exactly sort of look it is you are going for. If it is going to be a historical or current one then you should try to get as many pictures of the rail line as you can. This will let you know exactly what sort of supplies you will need. For example, if there are quite a bit of boulders around the railroad then you will want to pick up enough rocks to simulate these. If there is going to be sand then you will need to pick up some very fine grain sand to place onto your layout.

If you are going to have a good deal of woodlands surrounding the rail line you will need to pick up trees to suit the terrain. If it is a hardwood forest you will need to add oaks, maples, and the like. If it is a evergreen forest then you will need to place a selection of pines, cedars and other such trees. Also you will need to make sure that you place an amount that does not detract from your overall layout will at the same time will not be too thin.

If you will be using figurines in your layout then you will need to find some that fit into your train scale. You may have to do a little hunting to find the right size but you will soon find that there is quite a selection available for those willing to do so. Figurines can add a human element to an otherwise lonely landscape. This goes for cars and trucks as well. You have a plethora of vehicle sizes to choose from so it will all depend on the scale that you have built your railroad on.

If you find that your train would have had crossings then you can add these in as well. You can find lighted ones that can open and close as well as static ones that have to be handled manually. Wiring your new train layout will not be hard with the right tools to get you started. The secret is to start out with everything you need on hand so that you are not having to run to the store every time you need something.

One thing you will need to do is to know what short of current and voltage your model train will be using. If you have already purchased your train then you might consider taking the engine with you when you go to purchase new electrical parts. This will also save you some time if you are not having to return merchandise often.

Model Trains As A Hobby For Children

Did you ever collect model trains as a child? If you did then you might remember the awe with which you viewed the train as it tooted around the track. These trains seemed to be especially prevalent at the holidays and you could just imagine all the gifts that they would carry to all the good boys and girls.

Now you are grown and you have children of your own. They are interested in video games and such stuff but you want to find a hobby to keep them occupied and teach them with as well. One such hobby is that of model train building and collecting. The first thing you should do is to find a train that is acceptable for your child’s age. There should be several different ones available and you can choose to allow your child to assist in the selection process as well. For example, you would not want to choose a Z scale fully wired train for a seven year old. You would probably be better off starting them out on an H0 scale or slightly smaller.

This also works in reverse. You would not want to buy your twelve year old a big clunky childish model train. Allow your child to assist you in selecting their first engine. They can usually pick out one that they like while you make sure that it is one that will be suitable. The next part you will need to decide is what sort of track layout it is that will be needed for their new train. Again, you will want to pick one that they can work easily with but not too much so. After you have the basics you will then be ready to get them started.

Allow your child to set up the train and tracks as much as possible on their own. Encourage them along the way and give pointers when needed. Tell your children about your experiences with trains as a child. Help them to understand what is involved in train collecting as a hobby. Try to stimulate your child by also picking up some books on trains as well. These can be about the history of the railroad or just amusing children’s stories. As long as it can capture the child’s attention it will work.

Now that you have piqued their interest you will need to keep it. This can be by any number of ways. You might offer new box cars as a means of rewarding you child for making good grade, or doing their chores. You can also offer to provide some of the accessories for different tasks that they complete and excel at. If your child enjoys watching videos then you could pick up one of several that show real life trains and how they work. There are so many ways you can incorporate different train related tasks to alleviate their every day boredom.

Before you know it they will be old enough to collect them on their own. You will have then started them down the road to a hobby that is loved globally by innumerable people. It is also a hobby that will help you to teach them different lessons such as the importance of chores.

Lining Your Model Train Tunnel

Posted by Vgevge in Hobbies

It never fails. You go to see a friend’s new model train layout. He fires it up and the next thing you realize you are enjoying the lights and the sounds coming from the set. The working crossing guards, lights and all are awesome. There is only one problem that you can see at all. When the train approaches the tunnel the whole mystique is lost. Inside the tunnel you can see nothing but bare wires, mesh and naked braces that look as if they have been scavenged from goodness knows where.

So, why can’t the illusion of realism carry all the way through the tunnel? Wouldn’t it be nice to actually hear the sounds of the train whistle coming from the tunnel. It gets quieter and quieter as it goes further in and then it begins to grow in volume as it starts to come out the other side. You would love to be able to peek into the tunnel as the train is coming through and see the lights playing off the solid walls. This would make the illusion complete.

What is it that can help you to reach this level of realism? Well, for one you could use a tunnel liner that can be poured. This will allow you to shape it to your custom tunnel shape and size. These are available from many different sources so one should not be hard to find. To get ready to install one of these liners you will first cast a couple moldings. A couple of these will be all you will need to make and you will soon be in business. If you do not want to go through the trouble of lining the entire tunnel then you really only have to worry about lining the entire thing.

The only part of your tunnel that will need to be lined is the inside section that is visible. This will save you a good deal of trouble. After you have made your castings you will need to install them onto your model railroad track. Make sure that you attach them securely so that they are not able to pull loose after your train runs through them a few times. Once you have them installed you should then paint them to match the scene that you are depicting. If it is a granite mountain then you could paint your “rock face” to match it. This will help it to maintain the illusion of realism.

When you do your first run through the tunnel you will notice that the tunnel liners affect the sound that comes out. It will dampen the sound as it enters the tunnel and then will help it to build as it comes out the other side. By adding special touches such as these tunnel liners you can create exactly the amount of realism that you are going for. So, what will it be? Do you just ignore the so called small things or do you help to complete the illusion? Happy conducting!
