Home Lighting Provides A Great Mood For Any Room

Posted by Nbisea in Home Improvement

One of the most important elements in interior decorating is home lighting. The lighting design is an instrumental component for creating a mood for any room or setting. The one that is selected for various areas of a home can affect not only things such as mood, disposition, performance and even morale, but it can also play a big part in providing proper safety and security for the family.

When people decide on what type of lights to use throughout their abode, it is important to take into consideration how each of the rooms will be used, as the fixtures will enhance and sustain the types of activities that will be carried out and give the kind of ambiance that is desired for each area. This requires taking a careful look at all of the lighting fixtures and lighting accessories that will be installed, and also the types of additional table lamps and floor lamps that will be added to the overall lighting design plan.

In order to make sure that the homeowner can achieve the desired effects throughout the home, the first step is to grasp a general understanding of the various types of home lighting available. The better the homeowner understands the difference between ambient, task, accent and the effective use of natural lighting, the better outcome they will enjoy.

Ambient one, or general lighting, is the type of light that can illuminate a whole room. It is often a great idea to also install some type of dimmer device so that the homeowner can control the amount of light; either brighter for specific tasks or more subtle for entertainment and relaxation. Some of the most common types of ambient lighting fixtures are recessed lights, sconces, wall washers, track lighting, chandeliers, cove lighting, and various types of surface mounted lights.

The purpose of task one is to provide enough light for required tasks that need to be done in a certain space, such as cooking, reading, shaving, doing homework, or doing crafts or other such activities. Task one needs to be glare-free and it should be bright enough to make it easy to see things without straining the eyes. Typical types of task one are under cabinet lights, pendant lights, valance and various types of portable lighting fixtures, such as desk lamps and floor lamps.

Accent lighting is used to provide illumination to specific objects, such as an item of sculpture, a work of art, plants or architectural elements. In most instances, accent one is about three times as bright as typical ambient lighting, although this can be different depending on the desired effect. Sconces, track lighting, wall washers and under-cabinet lights are some types of fixtures that can be used for accent one.

Another aspect of home lighting that is important to consider is the natural light that comes into a room through doorways, skylights and windows. It is important to remember that the brightness and intensity of natural light will vary a great deal based on the time of year, the time of day and the weather. It is always advisable to take natural light into account whenever you are creating a lighting design plan.

Basic Fire Prevention For Your Home And Personal Safety

Posted by Tchrisusa in Home Improvement

According to the estimates of USFA in the year 2004 alone the number of fires that took place in the United States was 1.5 million. The estimated loss in dollars stood at staggering 9.8 billion dollars. More horrific figures reveal loss of death of about 3,900 approximately and about 18,000 injuries the same year. The USFA also said that during the same year the fatalities due to fires surpassed fatalities due to all sources combined. And the USFA also adds that even this number could be small in actuality as many small fires are not reported.

The statistics also reveals that more than eighty three percent of all fatalities and eighty percent of the total injuries due to fires took place in homes. These figures come as a bitter surprise as most of the fires are pretty much preventable if adequate precautions are taken. Following certain basic fire safety guidelines could greatly reduce the chances of fires and protect the homes and people from this disaster from striking.

One of the best ways to prevent home fires is to install smoke detectors at every floor of the home and also fire alarms. But, installing the smoke detectors alone would not serve the purpose. Some people think that “once installed forever installed” after installing smoke detectors. But, the fact is many a time the smoke detectors don’t work and do not detect smoke due to mere negligence on behalf of the house owner.

The smoke detectors batteries should be tested and checked on a regular basis and in fact the smoke detector should also be tested in whole. Make it a point to replace the battery every year. Do not smoke at home. It is one of the biggest causes of home fires.

The next big cause is electrical short circuit. Use properly rated wires for house wiring and so does other components. Also when plugging in electrical gadgets check the voltage rating to avoid shot circuits. Also, keep cords at a distance from rugs and carpet. Disconnect any appliance when done using. Replace old appliances or fix them before they become an electrical fire hazard. Also, use circuit breakers in the house wiring and also for plugging outlets to prevent fires due to overloading.

In recent years a lot of fires have been experienced due to electrical heaters to supplement home heating. Care should be taken to keep portable heaters at a distance from combustible materials to prevent fires. Also, go for heaters that have auto shutoff in case of overloading or overheating.

Fire places are also one of the biggest fire hazards in houses with fireplaces. Use screens to prevent fire spark from flying off to the outside of the fireplace. Keep combustible material at a distance from the fireplace to prevent them from catching fire. Also, do not overload the fireplace with excessive wood, which may cause sudden outburst of fire within few seconds and unexpectedly. Clean the chimneys periodically to help smoke escape freely into the air and also to clean bird nests which can catch fire.

Have an escape plan ready for the home. It is a good idea to be also prepared for a fire. Practicing an escape from time to time also increases response during the times of actual fire. Have a plan for every room in the house.

Educating the family members, especially children would make evacuation plan easier in the event of an emergency. Children are especially fascinated about fires and like to create fires, about a hundred thousand fires a year are started by children while playing.

People have a negligent attitude towards fire safety especially during the holidays. They relax every rule just for fun and end up paying huge price for that. Care should be taken even while selecting a Christmas tree, see that it’s not too big so as to make it difficult to manage and which can catch fire easily. Decorations which are non-flammable in nature should be used to decorate homes.

Wood is one of nature’s finest and most solid materials. No two pieces of wood are the same, which means when you fit hardwood worktops into your kitchen, you are introducing a completely unique design that won’t exist any-where else in the world. The beauty of hardwood worktops is that they are so versatile and come in a range of different styles, including the ever popular Oak, Beech and Cherry.

Choosing the right kitchen worktops for your kitchen will depend on your budget and your personal style. However it’s also important to consider the practicality of the materials you choose. Kitchen work surfaces take some rough treatment, such as hot pans, knives and household chemicals and it’s worth considering this before you buy.

Hardwood worktops are a great option for kitchen surfaces because if they become scratched or water stained, it’s simple to re-sand, re-oil and restore as good as new. Many people like the look, feel and durability of natural wood and these worktops tend to work well with almost any kitchen design, whether it’s an old farmhouse or new apartment.

As the maintenance of hardwood worktops is very simple, it means they can last a lifetime, assuming they are cared for properly with regular oiling, to seal in moisture. Oak hardwood worktops are extremely strong and durable and usually contain bundles of character. They may include a few small clean knots and are the perfect choice for the traditional cottage or farmhouse style kitchen.

Beech is another popular option for a hardwood worktop, with its pale, light tan shades and darker colour flecks which add to the character. Beech finishes tend to lie between Maple and Ash in style and colour and is the most popular and versatile of all the hardwoods. The light tone and soft grain produce a bright feel that compliments any style of kitchen.

The European species of beech tree produce a widely used timber, an easy-to-work beautiful wood. Throughout the drying process when the Beech is steamed, it yields a pink/orangey tan colour, while the unsteamed Beech yields a blonde tan coloured wood. The difference is duly noted in the final product.
A further option is Cherry, an elegant colourful wood, fast becoming one of the most popular choices for today’s kitchens.

True to its name, Cherry worktops have a subtle autumnal red appearance, which consumers will find darkens gracefully over time to a rich maturity. If exposed to direct sunlight, this transformation can occur in just six weeks however out of sunlight, can take six to eight months. Cherry can be described as a somewhat hard and heavy wood, making it ideal for use in the home and its solid structure makes Cherry highly resistant to shock and damage. Cherry wood is famed for its grain as much as its warm, homely colour’s. With a unique blend of beautiful markings, gum streaks and pin knots and combined with the rich, aging red and brown shades, Cherry is ideal material for your hardwood worktops.

Whatever your personal preference, the range of choice of hardwood worktops available ensures you are guaranteed an individual, stylish, hard-wearing kitchen surface that not only looks stunning, but will also stand the test of time.

Easiest Way To Clean Clogged Gutters

Fall has come and gone and winter is steadily approaching. If the snow hasn’t started falling just yet, now would be the perfect time to ensure that your gutters and downspouts are functioning properly. If your gutters are clogged and the snow falls and begins to melt it could leave you in a disastrous position with the surrounding elements of your home as well as foundation and basement water damage.

Gutter cleaning is a fairly simple task that any homeowner can perform if you don’t mind working on top of a ladder. The work is not tedious just manually intensive so to speak in that the best way to unclog a gutter is using the tools that God gave you, your hands, and a ladder. If you are worried about all the muck that accumulates in a gutter system you can wear a pair of inexpensive rubber gloves to help aide you in this process.

The first step in getting your gutters functioning appropriately is to get all the material that’s been deposited in your gutters cleared. You will need to take care in positioning the ladder on the gutter system so that you don’t do any unnecessary damage to it during the cleaning. Simply position the ladder on the gutter, climb to the top and remove the debris.

A couple of handy little tools to help you along in the process are hand garden shovels and a pail. When you get down to the only portion that remains is the sludge on the bottom of the gutters, you can use the hand shovel to scoop it out. Instead of just discarding it in your yard, you could use the pail to place all the material and then discard it properly in the trash can.

Once it looks all clear, I’d suggest hitting it with the hose to see that the water is flowing properly to the downspouts and out the bottom. If it is not, then you may have another issue with the actual downspout being clogged.

Again, it’s fairly easy to clear a clogged downspout. These clogs typical appear in the bends near the top of the gutters where they bend back and attach to your home. These bends tend to be good little places for nests to form and really clog a gutter system.

All you really need to know is this, the downspouts are typically attached to your home not at the bends so there’s nothing to worry about there and the bends actually piece together sort of like Lego’s. The only difference is that the upper pieces fit inside the lower pieces. They are made to fit this way so that the water has a continuous flow to ground zero.

Simply unhinge the upper piece by the downspout attachment at the gutter and start taking the bends apart. Once the pieces are removed, clear any debris that may be clogging the down flow of water. Once they are all cleared you can put the pieces back together and reattach it to the gutter system. Be sure to test again with the water hose to see that the drain is free and clear.

Make Your Home Energy-Efficient Before Installing Your Own Wind/Solar Power System

So you’ve been looking into creating your own electricity for your home? That’s Great! There are renewable energy sources all around you that you can easily tap into. Whether you are considering this option to save money on your utility bill, or doing your part to reduce your individual use of non-renewable fossil fuels, you will ultimately accomplish both!
There are a few steps, however that you must follow to be certain your home is energy-efficient for the coming Winter. Otherwise, what’s the point?

- Seal Duct Work

The number one way to conserve energy is to seal all duct work. Go crawl up into your attic or crawl space and check for leaks at joints and intersections. Then seal ‘em up with foil-backed tape or silicon caulking. Be careful! Don’t go fallin’ through your ceiling…

- Check your Thermostat!

Duh! Of course keeping your home all nice and toasty would be wonderful, but what’s wrong with wearing a comfy sweatshirt or somethin’? Lower your thermostat to around 60 degrees or so when no one’s home, and keep it at 65-70 otherwise. Also turn it down when ya go to bed. Ah, I love sleeping under my thick down comforter in Winter. That’s some good sleepin’!

- Fireplace are nice, but…

Fireplace are nice and romantic, aren’t they? Yeah, having a fire lit, sippin’ on a glass of wine, enjoying a nice conversation, or reading a book is somethin’ we all enjoy, but impractical for home heating purposes. The open flume allows cold air in even while fire is goin’! Seal it up after the moment passes!

- Weather Stripping!

Be sure to check around all doors and windows for air coming in and escaping as well. Use weather stripping to seal it up. If your around your windows leaks pretty bad, you might want to use that canned foam insulation stuff, and/or put up plastic window weather sheeting.

- Other Entry/Exit Points to check

More places to check and seal up are around plumbing pipes going through the wall, electrical outlets, light fixtures, etc. Use the proper insulation product! Check your hardware store and just ask your friendly clerk!

- Lower Water Heater Temperature

Lower your water heater to around 120 degrees and you will dramatically reduce the amount of fuel needed to keep the water heated. I mean, do you really need scorching hot water? Also, insulate the water pipes coming out of the water heater a few feet at least.

- Unplug All That Stuff!!!

Turn off all things like televisions, computers, etc…when not in use, Obviously. But also unplug all kitchen appliances such as toaster, coffee maker, microwave, whatever. They drain energy all day long sittin’ there unused. Plug ‘em into a power strip. It makes it alot easier. Just flip a switch! Oh yeah, about those out-dated light bulbs: What’s wrong with you? Use the new, energy-saving types. They last longer and use less power. True, they cost a heck of a lot more, but last so much longer, it’s actually saving you money in the long run. Almost forgot to mention that!

I have put considerable effort into weather-proofing my home. But that was just a start, because then I built my own homemade solar panels and even a small wind turbine proudly sits in my backyard! I couldn’t believe how easy it was to build and install my system. But you must follow these steps to help make your home as energy-efficient as possible, before you even think about building your own solar or wind power plant! And welcome to the Renewable Energy Revolution!

Resources: Jaime is an average working joe who has awakened to the fact that our Earth is a living, breathing organism, and we all must stop behaving in such parasitic ways! I live in a suburb of Dallas. My home is energy-efficient, and even better - I create the Energy I use! See how Right Here!
