Tips For Training Your New Best Friend

Posted by Coronas44 in Home

You have picked out the perfect dog to bring home to your family, just to find out that perfect dog may be your worst nightmare! How did that happen? The answer is your cute little angel was never taught how to behave in certain situations.

You would not leave your toddler alone in the living room to have free access to the remote controls, DVDs and snacks. You should not leave your puppy, either. If you do, you will likely come into a huge mess where your puppy had a blast while you were gone. The thing is that if you did not try to train your dog on how to behave, than this is your own fault! But sadly, it is the dog that is blamed and punished. How do you expect your dog to know what to do when put in certain situations?

You have brought your puppy or dog into your home to love and nurture, not to yell at and scold all of the time. This causes frustration for you and your puppy.

Teach one thing at a time. Your dog has a single track mind.

Do not demand immediate action. Give your dog a moment to carry out your command.

Be decisive and know exactly what you want from your dog.

Always be considerate of you dog. If your puppy is tired, do not expect him to get up and go through a training period. It is not a very nice thing to do, and your dog will likely be too tired to comprehend what you are trying to teach him.

A bond should be developed between you and your dog. You will be able to train your dog more effectively if your dog respects you as his leader. And, he will want to please you much more.
Be clear when you say your commands, and the commands should be the same each time in the same voice and manner. If you try to change these things, your dog will only get confused and you will only get frustrated.

Patience is the key to successfully training your dog. With patience, you will be able to accept the fact that your puppy is just that, a puppy. He is not a human, and therefore you will need even more patience to get you and your puppy through this trying period.

With all of the ways to train your dog, it is important not to fall into the trap of using command techniques that are very ineffective and down right cruel. The sad thing is that people believe what they read much of the time. There are choke collars, spike collars and electric collars available that many people are led to believe are the only way to get your dog to behave. This is just plain cruel and can literally affect the health of your dog.

Take some time to get to know the characteristics of your dog before you bring him home. For example, if you are expecting a dog that will lounge around, you would not want to bring home an energetic Puggle, or if you want a dog that will run around and play, you would not want to bring home a dog known for being lazy! This could lead to frustration, and therefore you and your dog would not be very happy. Your dog deserves to live in a happy and healthy home where he is loved and maybe even a little spoiled! How about getting him a cozy dog bed or a jacket for those cold, rainy days? Make him feel at home and love being with you and you with him.

Why The Protective Anode In Your Hot Water Heater Should Be Replaced

Posted by CallThePlumber in Home

Did you know that every month tens of thousands of hot water tanks burst prematurely due to corrosion causing severe water damage to property both indoors and outdoors, yet this can easily be avoided?

There is one simple thing you can do NOW to protect your hot water tank from the destructive effects of corrosion on your tank.

It’s Anode replacement!

So, what is a Sacrificial anode?

An Anode is a specially designed magnesium rod that is installed inside your hot water tank and is designed to protect your hot water tanks steel cylinder from severe corrosion resulting in premature tank failure.

Every steel cylinder hot water tank comes with one and will only last about 4-5 years, but once your Anode is depleted there is nothing to stop the destructive effects of corrosion on your tank.
Why is an anode necessary?

Steel cylinder type hot water tanks have a glass lining to help protect against corrosion. The glazing material is quite brittle and the continuous expansion and contraction of the tank every time the water is heated and cooled causes the development of thousands of hairline fractures.

As these fractures appear, water comes in contact with the steel walls on the inside of the tank and the glass lining starts to deteriorate exposing the steel cylinder to the effects of corrosion. The anode reacts with this exposed steel, sacrificially corroding in its place.

How Anodes work:

Anodes are manufactured from special grades of magnesium to suit various water conditions and they protect steel by a sacrificial electro-chemical action. Magnesium is electro-negative relative to steel. When a magnesium anode is fitted to a steel tank filled with water, a very small current will constantly flow through the water between the anode and any exposed steel area on the tank wall. The circuit is completed through the tank back to the magnesium anode.

This protective current is produced by the magnesium releasing ions, and this results in corrosion in the anodic area. The magnesium (the anode) corrodes instead of the steel tank (the cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called cathodic protection. Because cathodic surfaces cannot corrode, the steel tank is protected against rusting.

The heater manufacturers themselves recommend anode replacement in their owners’ handbooks. Dux Water Heaters recommends replacement at five-yearly intervals and the manufacturer of Rheem and Vulcan brand water heaters recommends seven or eight years for its standard range and ten years for its long life models.

Other than Call The Plumber, these relate to US conditions so they are totally unbiased and they all confirm the importance and necessity of anode replacement in water heaters.

“Following a schedule of timely replacement of the sacrificial anode in your hot water tank will double, or even triple, its life.”

Which types of heaters use an anode for corrosion protection and which ones do not.

All gas, electric and solar mains-pressure water heaters with a vitreous enamel or bonded ceramic coating utilize a sacrificial anode to provide additional corrosion protection.

Which heaters do not have an anode?

1. Gravity Fed Tanks Located In The Ceiling.
These are mostly found in older homes and they are rarely supplied new nowadays due to the fact that the hot water supply relies on gravity alone and as such, it’s not very satisfactory for showering.

2. All Types Of Instantaneous Gas Heaters.
These are small, wall-mounted heaters which heat the water as it passes through them. Common brands are Bosch, Pyrox, Zip, Rinnai Infinity and Rheem Integrity.

3. Stainless Steel And Copper Storage Type Heaters.
These heaters look similar to the ones that do require an anode. They are generally the same size and shape but the tank is either stainless steel or copper and does not require an anode.

Brand names to look out for with a stainless steel tank are Aqua-Max gas heaters and Edwards and Beasley, in both electric and solar types. Heaters with a copper tank include Lango Copperfied and Rheem Coppermatic. These copper tanks are no longer available due to the high cost of manufacture.

You should check with the manufacture of you tank and local water conditions on when to inspect your anode. For hot water heaters in the Sydney metropolitan area, we recommend the anode should be inspected between five and seven years of age.

Under average conditions, it is normal that an anode will require replacement at these times. Even if there is apparently still sufficient magnesium left, it is often heavily coated with mineral deposits and it is therefore unable to provide effective protection for the heater’s tank.

If your hot water tank is over 5 years old then you need to replace your anode NOW!

How To Find The Right Dining Furniture

Posted by AnnaStenning in Home

When furnishing your house, it is always important to opt towards something that matches and corresponds well with the general theme and style of your house. For instance, if your house is brightly coloured with bold red wall then you be better off with simple modern dining furniture either black of sand wooden in colour. You could perhaps get away with using dark chocolate brown but as long as there are no complex or elaborate designs on it.

Buying dining furniture is an integral part of the design of your house, as this is the one which people are more likely to use on a regular basis. The dining table alone has to stand the test of time, as you are aiming to keep the table for as long as possible. Therefore, it is always a good idea to choose something wisely, taking your time over what you choose and make sure that the material is sustainable.

Many of these furniture’s are made of wood, therefore those looking to go green will find that buying sustainable woods, second hand furniture or furniture made from woods other than rainforest wood, will enable them to find quality furniture and enable them to play a strong part in the environmental factor. Often people feel that buying sustainable wood furniture will mean the quality will be somewhat lower; however, current designs have proven that these are much stronger and better in quality.

There are three main things to consider when buying dining furniture, size, shape and capacity to fit. First time buyers are not likely to pick this up, as this is normally something people would feel less likely to consider, however, it is an important part of designing the house the way you want it to be designed. Furthermore, buying the wrong size and shape can create a very awkward dimension to the room.

Larger dining rooms would look better with large dining tables as this will fill the room better. Small dining rooms would need small dining tables naturally, so as not to take up too much space. This is also correspondent to the size of your chairs too, buying matching chairs is better than trying to find ones that vaguely match - this can often go wrong and will almost always look odd. You should aim to buy furniture that is going to be at least 45 - 50inches away from the wall on each edge.

The shape of the dining table can change the perspective of the room. Rectangle tables are more common amongst most households; however, round tables have fast become popular because of the way they are able to allow conversations to happen smoothly. These are better for a small group of people, however, you are able to obtain tables that can be adjusted to change shapes - these are made with leaves so you are able to take the straight edged shapes off.

The final thing to think about is the number of people it is likely to hold on the table. This depends on the number of people residing within the house, therefore if there is only a small number of you then it would be a good idea to buy a table that is not too wide otherwise this would make conversations more difficult between people. You should also consider the spacing of each individual so there is more arm room for each person when dining.

Other things to think about are the style, such as how it will match with the rest of the furniture in the house. Do you have more antique style furnishing or is your house modern? Do you prefer dark colours or are you looking for more daring bright colours? These are just some of the questions to be thinking about and it will help you more if you shop around for a while to reach to your final decision.

Anna Stenning loves to go shopping for her house and has recently found the perfect dining furniture for her dining room.

How To Do Electrical Repairs

Posted by Jimmycox in Home

Electrical appliances are so much part of the American household scene today that most people take them for granted. Refrigerators, freezers, mixers, irons, air conditioners, clothes and dish washers, ventilating fans, broilers, vacuum cleaners, heaters, etc., all contribute to our comfort, convenience and health.

It’s only when something goes wrong that we begin to wonder if electricity is our servant or our master. A five-cent fuse in a dark corner of the basement fails for no apparent reason and life upstairs stops. Food spoils in the freezer, the heating system grinds to a halt, dirty clothes pile up, or a half-cooked dinner sits in a cold rotisserie.

Here are solutions to two electrical problems which you can carry out yourself.

Power Where You Want It

Flexible extension cords with rugged plugs and receptacles of armored type will last for years. Two most useful lengths are 10 feet and 25 feet. To keep the fiber center piece of the plug from falling out, apply narrow strips of adhesive tape between and around prongs.

An extension cord is such a useful accessory around the house, shop, garage and garden that after you make and use one you’ll probably make another. To take care of heavy current loads, use at least No. 16 and preferably No. 14 flexible wire, with heavy outer covering; thinner No. 18 wire is poor economy. And avoid 10-cent “molded mud” plugs and receptacles.

Spend a little more on armored fittings, and you’ll be glad you did the first time you step on them, drop them to a cement floor, or drive the car over them. These fittings and the heavy wire are widely available from electrical, hardware, radio and mail-order firms.

Before trimming insulation off ends of wire, slip cord through cap of receptacle. To prevent strands of wire from unraveling under terminal screws, solder them very lightly, then form into loops with long-nose pliers. Put two or three layers of tape over wire, far enough back so that they come under the clamp of the end cap.

The molded body of the extension receptacle fastens to the armored end cap with two screws. When these are tightened in properly, they are below surface. Use narrow blade screwdriver for job.

Cable clamp on end cap has two screws. Turn them in a little at a time each, so that pressure is distributed evenly around layers of tape on the wire. A pull on the cable will not then loosen the connections to the terminal screws inside. (Attachment plug is assembled in similar manner.)

When the Lights Go Out

When the lights go out the fuses or circuit breakers have been overloaded. The only cure is to lighten the load, not to invest in larger protective devices

Standard “plug” fuses have bases like lamps, and screw into receptacles in “cut-out” box. Keep a record on cover of latter of house circuits controlled by particular fuses to ease replacement.

Cartridge” type fuses have exposed metal end caps, which fit tightly in spring clips in the cutout box. Keep spares in the latter. CAUTION: Even if the fuse is blown out, the end cap on the side of the meter is still “hot.”

To remove a suspected cartridge fuse, first kill power by turning off main switch (have a flashlight handy if room is dark), then pry out with wooden stick. Turn on switch if light is needed during testing operation. Be sure to turn it off again before attempting to insert the new fuse.

These are two fairly simple jobs you can fairly easily carry out yourself.

Keep Your Masonry Looking Like New

Posted by Jimmycox in Home

It may be inaccurate to apply the term “maintenance” to such permanent installations as masonry projects, but there are times when some touch-up work is in order. The most common fault that will appear in concrete - is, despite the most careful preparation of mix, installation and curing - is a crack.

If this is due to a poor subbase the crack can become quite serious, especially if uneven settling causes a portion of the slab to sink below the grade level of adjacent areas. Many times it is necessary to crack up the nuisance area, remove the old concrete and repour. But this sort of major repair job will become necessary only if you neglect the procedures outlined or skip some of the steps in an effort to hurry the job.

Most of the time the crack will be isolated - across a corner or into an expansion or contraction joint. When it is too bad to walk on or too unsightly to tolerate, it can be easily repaired. The first step is to remove the bad concrete.

If the crack is wide and deep you can often get a pry bar under the piece and lift it right off the sub-base. If the repair area is in the center of a slab or walk, use a wide chisel and hammer to remove the bad material. Be sure all edges are clean even if you have to chip off a little concrete from adjacent good areas.

Clean the section thoroughly to remove all dirt, dust and any foreign matter. Oil or grease will make it difficult for the new patch to adhere to existing concrete; if any is present, remove it by washing with a solution of 8 oz. of tri-sodium-phosphate in 1 gal. of hot water. Scrub the surface thoroughly with the solution and rinse with clean water.

Allow excess moisture to drain off and paint the area with pure cement adhesive. Coat the bottom of the cavity as well as all edges. When this coating is sticky to the touch it is ready to take the pour.

Cement adhesive should also be used in the mix you make for the repair job. Fifteen oz. of dry mix cement adhesive product, an equal amount of water and a 60 lb. sack of concrete makes a good repair substance. The ingredients should be thoroughly mixed and then mixed again with enough additional water to get a good flowing concrete. Cement adhesive products may differ, so be sure to read labels carefully and follow directions.

Apply the mix to the prepared, tacky surface and work it in just enough to fill all crevices. Finish with float or trowel to match adjacent areas. As soon as the patch has hardened on the surface so it won’t mar, sprinkle it with water and cover with paper or canvas or an old burlap sack and keep the surface damp for at least three days. If the weather is hot or if the repair job will be exposed to bright sunlight, it is a good idea to cover and keep moist for an even longer period.

Caulking Small Cracks

Where the size or location of the crack does not justify a complete repair, it is usually advisable to seal it with a suitable caulking material to prevent it from collecting water.

In brickwork or concrete block, cracks may occur at door and window openings. They can be caused by settling of the house and/or foundation, or even by moisture in a joint which, in freezing weather, expands the joint and forms a crack. Repair is simple - just a matter of cleaning the crack and refilling it with fresh mortar.

With a little time and effort, masonry can be maintained almost perfectly for a very long time.

Questions Before Buying Home Entertainment Furniture

Posted by Maxineoah in Home

Have you ever thought of finishing your living space into a stylish home entertainment center? Many people have had this idea and are now reaping the benefits of their own home theatre for less money and effort than you think.

Of course, you want your home entertainment center to have the perfect accessories and gadgets but you must remember the most important piece of furniture is the entertainment unit itself. This usually includes the main tv unit in the middle and a couple side piers for displaying accessories and mounting electronic devices. These electronics can be as simple as a cable box or as complex as a surround sound hub with dvd player and equalizer. For this reason I definitely recommend buying home entertainment furniture in a complete set. All of the pieces will be uniform in finish color, size, and shape. It is the best way to get the look you want, the number of pieces you need, and save a lot of money at the same time.

First, there are some questions you need to ask yourself before buying your furniture set:

1.) How much space have you set aside for your entertainment furniture?

2.) How many pieces of furniture do you want?

3.) What design and color scheme are you looking for?

4.) Where can I find all this at an affordable price?

I will answer each question as if I were the one in the market. At the end I will have a very good idea of what I’m looking for and where to find it at a great discount.

Question number one asks how much space I’ve set aside for my furniture needs. Personally, I will be adding the entertainment center against one of my living room walls. I want it to take up about 2/3 of the length of my wall which is 15 feet long. This helps me to understand the dimensions of the set I am able to purchase without playing a guessing game.

Number two asks how many pieces of furniture I want with my set. I am looking for a 3-piece set including the main tv stand and two accent side piers for displaying accessories and decorative art. This narrows down my choices even further since I know exactly the number of pieces I want.

As for design and color scheme, this is obviously nothing more than personal preference. But keep in mind that you should consider the existing decor of the room the entertainment center will be added to. You don’t want your new furniture to clash with anything you already have. As for me, I would like a more modern dark finish such as black or deep brown. You can see that with each answer to our list of questions the final choice gets closer and closer.

The most important question to answer is number five. How can you save money on the home entertainment center of your dreams? The answer is pretty simple. Shop online! You would not believe the incredible discounts and deals you can find by shopping online as opposed to a local furniture retailer. The key is that there is so much more competition online due to the sheer number of sellers. This brings prices down as they all compete for our dollars in the huge Internet market. Now that we’ve answered all of the important questions go find exactly what you want. Happy shopping!
