Protect Your Building Against Fire Damage

Posted by ZouckB in Home

Fire is the worst nightmare for the residents of a building. Fire damage can destroy both life and property; it has the capacity to wipe out hundreds of lives within moments. What is most dangerous about a fire tragedy is that it spreads very fast and does not give you any time to react. Industrial fires are more common because of the presence of large amounts of inflammable objects inside it.

Domestic fires are equally dangerous if not brought under control initially. The basic aim should be to try and prevent fire because once it breaks out; it is very difficult to bring it under control. The buildings should follow precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of a fire and consequently, fire damage. Fire tragedies can be averted with proper precautionary measures and the measures should be implemented properly because without proper implementation of fire prevention measures, fire can possibly spark and cause extensive fire damage.

Public awareness and alertness is a very effective tool against fire. If people are alert about things which can be potent causes of fire, then fire damage and fire tragedies can be averted. The people of the building should be taught about the major causes of fire. They should be well informed about various household articles which are highly inflammable. They should be taught how to identify inflammable and non flammable objects. The major reason for the outbreak of fire in houses is due to gas leak. The cooking gas comes through a pipeline which is made up of metal or rubber.

Metal and rubber can undergo wear and tear easily. If it happens then the leakage of the gas will start off instantly. The gas spreads to other parts of the house and is not visible. Now if anyone lights up a flame then the gas is ignited and the area goes up in flames instantly.

In order to prevent such fire damage and fire disasters the gas pipeline should be free from leakages. Any pipeline can have leaks but the pipelines should be inspected regularly to identify leaks. Such leaks should be repaired immediately and if needed then it should be replaced completely.

Another area from where major fire disasters start is the electrical connection vault. The part of the house where all the mains of the house are located should be inspected regularly by an electrician. He can inspect and identify short circuits and some other problems within the electrical network of the house. Earthing is necessary to prevent any fire from lighting. The switches and other electrical appliances should be replaced time and again and should be repaired time and again.

Fire damage can be easily avoided in buildings by proper planning and implementation of fire fighting techniques. Basic fire fighting tools should be available in the building. In case of any fire please inform the firemen who will come and extinguish the fire.

The storehouse of the building should be free from any inflammable objects otherwise a small spark will trigger another fire disaster.

Fire alarms a must in large buildings; fire alarms have prevented a lot of fire tragedies and fire damage.

Fire Damage Restoration Saves The Day

Posted by TheOsmund in Home

Not too long ago I went through a lot of problems in my life. Those problems seemed unavoidable at the time but now that I think of it, maybe it could have been avoided. The problems I was going through consisted of a house fire. This fire nearly took away a lot of possessions I had. However, I am thankful to be living on this earth today. Who knows what would have happened if I did not hear my smoke alarm going off.

The night my house caught on fire was one of the worst nights of my life. I live by myself because my husband passed away ten years ago but I still had a lot of his possessions that I held close to me. What do you do when your house catches on fire and all of your possessions that you held close to you is ruined? All I can say is I did not know what to do; all I wanted to do is break down and cry.

I was always taught to never give up, no matter what has brought you down and no matter what situation was in. I guess this situation was no use to give up so I started to do some research on a computer that was in the library. As I was doing some research on the Internet, I found an article on fire damage restoration. This article on fire damage restoration immediately got my attention because it was just what I needed. When it came to getting my stuff back through fire damage restoration, I was very happy.

I did not know I could get my items back through fire damage restoration so you could imagine just how happy I was. When I first found out about fire damage restoration I could not believe what I had read. I immediately started to read more on fire damage restoration and learnt that fire damage restoration helped restore your items that have been through a fire.

I looked up a fire damage restoration company that was in my area and called them as soon as I got to a phone. When I called the fire damage restoration company they told me the process of fire damage restoration and I was very surprised to learn about the process of fire damage restoration. They also told me the process of fire damage restoration would take anywhere from four days to eight days. I was fine with the amount of days it would take because it was either four to eight days or forever. I do not know if I could have gone on if I would not have been able to use fire damage restoration. I now have all of my husband’s old pictures, letters and belongings. If you have never lost stuff in a fire, then you are lucky. However, if you do loose stuff in a fire in the future, I would like you to know about fire damage restoration, because it really does help.

Tips In Preventing A Flooded Basement

Posted by ZouckB in Home

Nobody wants to have their basement become an instant swimming pool because of flooding. A flooded basement is a problem that would involve hundreds and even thousands of dollars to solve. However, most homeowners still ignore the tell-tale signs that their homes are good candidates to having flooded basement. So for those who do not know the obvious causes of basement flooding, here are some of the causes and their solution.

An area with high amount of precipitation will always have water seeping through the ground, making the ground saturated. If the ground is already saturated with water, additional water would lead to a flooded lawn or yard which would create additional stress on the foundation walls of the basement. If you’re house is located in a heavily precipitated area, then expect to have wet and saturated grounds most of the year. A flooded basement can be avoided by making sure that your yard or lawn is draining properly.

Lawns, driveways and walkways that are sloping towards the house would make the water flow in the wrong direction. Water should be flowing away from the house and not towards it to prevent a flooded basement from happening. Water drainage of the yard can be corrected by digging out small waterways to redirect the flow of water away from the house and towards the street.

Another tell-tale sign that a flooded basement is likely to happen in your home are cracks in the basement walls. Cracks are entry way of water coming from the ground. Cracks that are not fixed immediately can result to the weakening of the basement’s foundation. Make sure to seal the cracks by caulking them to make them watertight. Another good way of making your basement walls waterproof is to cover them with paint that has sealant properties.

Usually, the bulk of the water pipes are found in the basement because this is the area where the washing machine is located. Busted and leaky pipes may lead to a flooded basement if not fixed immediately.

One of the nastiest causes of a flooded basement is caused by damaged or burst household sewage pipes. One way of preventing this is by avoiding the disposal of viscous liquids in drain pipes to prevent clogging.

Flooded basements may also occur due to the wrong orientation of downspouts. Downspouts that are facing the house are doing more harm than good because they are directing water into the house rather than away from it. If your downspouts are facing the house, then turn them around.

Except for natural flooding, most of the causes of a flooded basement are from the homeowner’s negligence of making sure those water pipes, gutters, and basement walls are in good condition. It is always important to make sure that the basement is water tight and that all tell-tale signs of basement flooding are dealt with promptly. Remember the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? Well, for flooded basements, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pool of flood water”.

Buying Red-Tagged Properties In Santa Cruz

Posted by Sebfrey in Home

If you have ever driven by your dream Santa Cruz home, only to notice that it is vacant and there is a tag on the door, chances are you have driven by a home that has fallen subject to the city’s strict building codes. People who renovate their homes outside of the boundaries of the city’s building codes will have their homes red tagged. These homes may be available to you at a deep discount if you know how to buy red-tagged properties in Santa Cruz

Reasons for Red Tagging

Homes can be red tagged for a variety of reasons. One common reason is changing a portion of the home into an apartment to rent illegally. These homes are usually not available for sale, because all the homeowner has to do to make the property meet the building codes again is remove certain parts of the apartment, such as the kitchen or bathroom, to make it impossible for that part of the home to be rented again.

However, homes can also be red tagged because they are unsafe. For instance, if a home has serious structural damage, the city will red tag it and ask the owner to move until repairs can be made. The cost of these repairs will make it nearly impossible for most homeowners, and thus the homeowner will be forced to sell. Because of the circumstances, the owner will need to sell the home at a steep discount in order to find a buyer.

Red-Tagged Properties Bring Deep Discounts

Red-tagged properties are often intriguing to buyers because of the deep discounts they offer. Not only is the property discounted due to the cost of repairs, but it is also discounted further because financing is difficult to attain. The seller may have to discount the property enough so that a buyer could afford to pay cash for it. This can be a great way to get in to the highly popular Santa Cruz real estate market.

Buying Red-Tagged Properties

To buy a red-tagged property, you first need to find a realtor who has experience with these homes to help you find available properties and make offers on them. Then, you will need to find financing. This is the difficult part, because lenders view red-tagged properties as a high risk. If you cannot afford to make the necessary repairs, you will be forced to sell the property again shortly after buying it, and the lender will not make much money. You will probably have to choose a hard money lender and put a lot of money down on the property. These lenders will charge higher interest rates, but you can use the loan to get the property, make the repairs, and then refinance. The other option is to pay cash for the property if you can.

Keep in mind that some red-tagged properties may not be listed for sale, but they may be available. You can sometimes contact an owner of a red-tagged property with an offer and get a sale even before the property is offered for sale. Your realtor can help you make these offers.

What To Do And Not To Do After Water Damage

Posted by Werry55 in Home

Water damage irrespective of the source always causes devastating affects and the blow is really hard especially for the people whose house is located near by the ocean or near the sea level. Folks who reside by the sea are more liable to water damage and it is tough for them to manage things after torrential rain or impish storm.

Unfortunately, the folks staying in such water damage susceptible area are ill-fated and always have to live under the shadow of the impending water assault. The water floods inside the house and then begins the troubled times. The rain water runs through every personal belongings and fixtures in the house based on the severity of the attack. What makes the water damage so terrible is the financial loss that follows the damage.

Restoration process should begin as soon as possible to bring back and reinstate as many things as possible. Action should be in progress without any time delay. The first thing to do is to collect and organize the things depending on their value. This is followed by removing the floating debris that interferes with the restoration process.

As mentioned before, the damaged belongings should be assorted based on their importance and what it means to you. If the water damage is mild, luckily you can restore most of the things with a little effort. Otherwise, you need to have the patience and guts to dump the spoilt things that are damaged beyond repair. It is certainly an emotional issue for many to throw away pieces that are of sentimental attachment but when it is understood that they cannot be of any use to anyone, then it is wise to discard them without piling it up. Once new replacement items and furniture are bought, the old damaged piece will lie idle in the junk yard or garage taking away space.

Epidemic disease and viral infections break out after water damage and you have to take care of the hygiene factors. Do not consume anything that is contaminated with the water and get rid of such spoiled food to stay away from food poisoning. Any broken piece of utensil, smashed jug, cracked glass and fragmented plates should be disposed.

All the electrical and electronic appliances should not be put to use until you get it checked with an authorized technician. There are chances that the equipments might have damaged by water entry and so it is unsafe to use them straight away. While the restoration process is in full swing, be vigilant and check out for any signs of electrical wire damage as it would end up in fire damage adding to the already existing problems. Do not operate any of the electrical gadgets with wet hands and ensure that the floor and carpet is perfectly dry and not damp.

Drying and removing the moisture from the interiors is a headache. You should never use a blower or any tool operated by heating mechanism to dry the interior after the water damage. This is because by doing so, more mildew gets attracted and this increases the moisture level making the condition worse. Forget using heaters for drying after water damage.

By the time you restore the house after water damage, you will be enlightened by the fact that nothing really belongs to you in this world and some day or the other you have to leave the things that mattered to you the most and go ahead with life.
