Pet Clothes Are Not Just For Looks

Posted by Genxer66 in Pets and Animals

All thru history dogs, cats and pets in general have proven to be valuable additions to the families of millions of people. Even kings and queens have seen the value of a faithful companion to ease the tensions of everyday life at court. Pets have proven their loyalty and devotion to their masters time and time again and are a part of many memories we take with us through the rest of our lives. It is because of this speical relationship with our pets that they become just like another child in our household and are treated as such by many pet owners. One of the ways in which we show concern for our pets, especially with the really popular small breeds, is clothing them.

Luxury dog apparel and jewelry has become the rage all over the world. From cool hoodies for casual wear, to tuxedo and wedding dresses for the most formal events. Hoodies, t-shirts, dresses, jackets, rain coats…you name it, there is an outfit made for every pet and there is an outfit on the internet for every occasion you can possibly think of. Jewelry is a way of dressing up the clothes with hair pins and shiny collars along with necklaces and tiaras.

With all this hoopla about designer clothes and jewelry, there is a practical side to buying your dog clothes. Smaller breeds are usually in need of a little extra warmth as they don’t have as much body heat as the larger breeds. Clothes for your pet, especially up in the colder northern states, are a must. Many people think that a dog or cats fur is enough to keep them warm, but that’s simply not true. Even large dogs can use a hoodie or two in the winter for added protection against the elements. We live in south Texas and own a darling maltese breed dog with lots of fur, but in the winter months our little pal is always cold. We usually have to keep some sort of hoodie or t-shirt on him to keep him from shivering. The Yorkie breed is especially cold natured as well and will often be seen shivering even when the temperature seems totally fine to humans.

Measuring your pet for the proper fit is very important. If the clothes are to small it will rub in certain spots on his or her fur and cause sore spots. Measure around the neck first, then the length of the back from neck to tail. Next is the chest measurement. Start just behind the neck and go all the way around the chest just behind the front legs. Some other measurments that may make a difference in fit is around the hind leg at the girth, around the forepaw and the girth, length of the hind legs, and the length of the front legs. These numbers must then be compared with the sizing chart of the place you are buying the clothes from and a decision on which size can be made much easier than just guessing at it.

So whether you live in a cold climate and need added protection against the elements or you just like the looks of your precious little pal with a harley jacket on, dog clothes are here to stay and they are growing in popularity as we speak. And, jewelry to accent the clothes or just all by themselves is a great addition to your dogs’ appearance. Bottom line is have fun with your pet!! Enjoy the love and companionship they give you and try to give them something in return.

Choosing The Right Horse Trailer

Posted by Pwiskell in Pets and Animals

If you have decided to invest in purchasing a trailer you will probably be overwhelmed by the immense range of trailer available on the market. There are many things to consider when selecting a trailer. Here are some of the things you should consider before purchasing a trailer.

* Steel or Aluminum: Both steel and aluminum trailers can be found in all shapes and sizes. Steel trailers are heavier, so if you are looking at a larger trailer you might want to veer away from steel. Aluminum has the additional advantage that it does not rust, so requires less repairs in the long run. Most used trailers will be made of steel, so be careful to look over the trailer very carefully to make sure there are no dangerously rusted areas. With a lower price tag steel trailers are the most common trailers on the road.

* Bumper Pull or Gooseneck: Bumper pull trailers can be towed by a wide range of vehicles. Heavy SUVs and vans can capably pull a 2 horse trailer with a bumper pull hitch. Goosenecks must be pulled with a pick-up truck. While gooseneck hitches can be removed, they take up a fair bit of space in the back of your truck bed and can make it difficult to ship other things in the back. On the other hand, goosenecks are safer and easier to pull once you get used to them.

* Slant Load, Straight Load or Stock: There are many interior designs for trailers. Slant loads have dividers that sandwich horses at a 45 degree angle. This is said to give the horses a better sense of stability than straight loads. Straight loads are usually forward facing trailers where the horses stand side by side. Some straight loads allow horses to be shipped facing rearward as well as frontward. Stock trailers are open concept, usually divided into two sections. Horses can stand in any way they are comfortable and can be shipped loose for long hauls. The right style of interior depends a great deal on your horses. Most trailers are straight loads, and most horses are comfortable with that. Slant loads can be great alternatives for horses who have troubles balancing in the trailer. Stock trailers are best for large horses or if you are shipping young or untrained animals.

* Step Up or Ramp Load: There are people who swear by each of these types of trailers, each of which have their own range of benefits. Ramp loads are generally good for horses with some loading experience and offer a safe way to get horses on and off the trailer. They also allow for loading on surfaces that would otherwise raise the floor too far above the ground level making a step quite large. Ramps can be very heavy and are not great for bad loaders. Step ups do not require the lifting of a heavy ramp. Horses generally step on without too much difficulty and since you can close the door behind them without delay they are great for horses who are bad shippers. Unloading off step ups can be scary for some horses. They may try to jump off and slip in the process.

* Tack Room: Some trailers have a built-in tack room. If you show a lot this can come in very handy, both to store your tack and to change into your show clothes. Others have smaller tack storage lockers.

Tips On How To Care For Aquarium Fish

Posted by Piusvic in Pets and Animals

Fish kept in an aquarium are definitely the easiest pets you can keep. The first thing to do is to learn the basic steps in caring for an aquarium. There are things that should be done daily to care for fish and some things that need only be done weekly or bi-weekly. Fortunately, daily care consists of very simple things to do.

Just spend a few minutes watching them and you can detect any signs of unhappiness if any. Yes, fishes do suffer from stress so keeping a fish happy is the secret to keeping it healthy. The lights and filters are important to maintain the perfect equilibrium of the aquarium so do check them regularly to make sure they perform in peak working conditions. Do not forget to give your fish their food everyday. Give them, enough food that will last for the duration of two to three minutes feeding time. Excess food that is not consumed will sink to the bottom and become debris, adding to the nitrate levels and rising the toxicity of the water. You should check the water ph and temp weekly. If there are changes required, do them promptly. You can know about what conditions will be suitable for your fish from the pet store where you purchase the fish from. Every variety of fish can thrive in particular conditions.

You have to spend time to clean the filter too. Filters collect waste excreted by the fish and left in the tank in the form of excessive fool. If you do not clean these filters, they will get clogged and not be able to perform their task of filtration. In addition to eliminating waste, a filter sometimes acts as an aeration device cycling oxygen through the tank. In case your filters get congested, the movement of gases in them will also slow down. This can reduce the total volume of oxygen in the aquarium. Without rectifying this problem as soon as possible, your fish are surely moving towards an untimely death. Change the filter on the aquarium every two to three weeks depending on need. As soon as your water begins looking dirty and has an offensive odor, you must clean your filter. Some filters need to be replaced, while other simply need to be cleaned with water.

Go slow when you are changing water in your aquarium. Do not let the lights and other fixtures remain when you are cleaning your aquarium. You must replace roughly a third of the water in the tank with fresh water every week or two. Water can be added from the tank provided you treat it for temperature, keeping it near two degrees of the water in the aquarium. The retailer at the pet store will guide you on the proper kind of water to be used. Sometimes, the tap water treatment is done in about an hour, while for others you will need to keep the water overnight.

You can remove the algal growths from the walls of your fish tank by using a scrubber. Be very particular you are not disturbing the fish when you are cleaning the tank. You will have to move about the rocks in your tank too because this loosens the residue collected under them and make them come to the surface from where you can remove them. A siphon or a small bucket may be used to remove this debris which you can do when you are replacing the water. Remove all dead leaves from the water plants. In order to clean the outer portion of the aquarium, simply use a squeegee soaked in water. Do not miss out on cleaning the lid and the cover of the tank. Lastly, plug the aquarium back in, and enjoy the freshly cleaned tank.

How To Pick The Best Housing For Your Pet

Posted by Genxer66 in Pets and Animals

Your pet needs a good home to live in when outdoor. There are many times when you have to leave for several hours and don’t want to leave your pet in a cramped kennel for that long. Or, you many keep your pet in your yard but don’t have an exterior fence to keep him in. There are many affordable options for pet owners to consider these days. The chain link fence has always been the only reasonable option to consider for outdoor kennels. Chain link has been used for many years for backyards to keep in pets and children from wandering off.

With the new modular fencing on the market there are many other options that are considered much safer, reliable and flexible. There are uncovered wires on the chain link fence that your dog may get his collar caught on and some chain link will not hold in the smaller breeds or puppies. Young puppies can usually squeeze right through the square openings. Today’s answer to your pets unsafe housing is called Modular Kennels.

Modular Kennels are taking the pet industry by storm. Most are reasonably priced, easy to install and are available in custom sizes and shapes. Different sections can be purchased to build the exact size and shape of the kennel so as to fit your needs according to individual space constraints. Modular kennels are a step above other fencing in that they are safer and do not have metal wires or loose ends that may be harmful to your dog. For these reasons, Modular Kennels have become more and more popular among professionals and regular dog owners alike.

It is important to consider the size of your dog and how much space he or she needs. Many neighborhoods have very small back yards, so it is important to plan well with the area you have to work with. Inside this structure there should be a place for your dog to take shelter in such as a dog house.

Again, there are many sizes and shapes of dog houses, so choose the one that is just right for you. There should also be a place for water and food so that your pet won’t be walking in and out of it. Lastly there should be enough room for your dog to walk around in freely for exercise.

Modular fencing is extremely easy to install. All that you will need will be listed in your instruction booklet. If you just follow the manufacturer’s information, you’ll have your kennel up in no time at all. It comes in sections that you simply put together with clips and you can make the kennel in a variety of configurations depending on your needs.

After construction is finished, then simply place your pets house inside along with a water bowl and you’re off and running. There are options for dog houses, such as weather flaps that can keep out the rain or snow, so keep that in mind when purchasing. Also, if there are no trees in your yard to shade your kennel, there are different covers available to you. Hard covers and shade cloth covers are very popular to go along with your modular dog kennel.

Just remember, one size does not fit all where different breeds of dogs are concerned and where different size yards must be taken in to account. Modular Kennels are the only answer to that problem. Also, safety and comfort for your pet is the number one consideration in any kennel project, so considering the Modular Kennel is definitely something you should look at.

These Modular Dog Kennels are also used by professional breeders because of their versatility. Extra gate panels and separation pannels can quickly turn a single Modular kennel in to a six run professional kennel or more.

Horse Training: It Just Takes A Little Bit Of Time

Posted by Alanlargo in Pets and Animals

When you have a wild horse or a newborn, they are not adept at all to your training techniques. In other words, they do not know you from Adam!

The very first step in training your horse is to develop a relationship between you and the horse. If you happen to have a new horse for yourself, you must take into consideration that he or she does not know you. The horse does not have the slightest idea of who you are.

So, the first step in horse training is to get to know the horse and let the horse get to know you. Regularly visit him or her, letting them get used to your presence, smell, and feel. You will have to start slow with a particularly wild horse, but patience really is a virtue.

For true success, the behavior of the horse has to come first in training it before anything else can follow. It is imperative for you to nip bad behavior in the bud well before you can begin anything else.

Some horses have natural bad habits. For example, balking is one bad habit but it is easily curable. This is when the horse will refuse to move forward at all. And in some cases, if you insist that he or she moves forward they may have a tendency to become violent.

This takes great patience as with all horse training techniques. There could be many several reasons for this behavior such as fatigue, hands are heavy, they are scared or even that they are just plain stubborn.

Bolting is another typical behavior of wild horses. This occurs when the halter is being removed and in a lot of cases, the horse will wheel away before it is even completely off. There are a few causes for this behavior which may include anxiousness, or even poor handling of the horse.

This is a behavior that you want to be careful of treating. The reason for this being is that horses tend to kick out as they are wheeling, so you must be careful. Treats can be very effective when put on the ground right before you being to take the halter off.

Other bad horse habits that you might need to watch for, including their definitions;

- Barn Sour: A horse that does not like to leave the barn or stable.

- Bucking: A movement whereby a horse lowers its head and raises its hindquarters into the air, usually while kicking out with its hind legs.

- Pulling The Halter: When a horse tries to break free from being tied up or lead by its trainer, oftentimes if the horse panics or is startled.

- Shyness: A horses learned response to a painful experience, usually one in which involved rough handling or abuse of some kind.

- Striking and Kicking: A horses means of defense when it is afraid, attacking to defend, in pain or just plain malicious.

- Jigging: When an anxious or unsettled horse prances in place, in most cases because he wants to go but he cannot.

- Rearing: When a horse stands on its hind legs with both forelegs in the air, usually trying to unsettle a rider.

With a new horse, particularly a wild horse, you will especially need to practice extreme care and patience. Training a wild horse does not happen overnight and before you can start with the actual training, both you and the horse together need to get past the old bad habits and poor behavior. Only then can you both move forward together.

Health Benefits Of Owning A Pet

Posted by Redgsr in Pets and Animals

It’s often stated that dogs are a man’s best friend. However, that also rings true for many pet animals, including cats, fish, birds, and exotic animals. Just as all of these pets offer companionship to their owners, beloved animals also provide a significant amount of health benefits to their owners.

The most common pets in the United States are cats, dogs, and fish. Birds, and small animals such as hamsters and mice, are a distance third and fourth. Some pets that were formerly considered exotic, especially reptiles, are growing in popularity. Although dogs are found in more households than any other pets, more fish are domesticated than any other animal. Although most households only have a single cat or dog, most fish “guardians” own more than a dozen.

Some exotic pets such as reptiles and birds don’t seem all that unusual. However, there are a number of pets that you wouldn’t expect to see as family friendly household pets. Animals must be bred and trained, sometimes for many generations, before becoming suited to human interaction and earning the distinction of “pet.”

Uncommon pets that have grown in popularity include chickens, tame silver foxes, hedgehogs, monkeys, raccoons, piranhas, and even cheetahs. The list could continue, although some of the most unusual “pets” are actually domesticated illegally.

Regardless of what animal is selected by its owner, both receive benefits of the symbiotic relationship. Medium-sized pets, especially dogs, are great workout partners for a walk or run around the part. Fostering at least one pet has consistently been shown to provide such physical benefits as lowered blood pressure.

Some of the health benefits are directly related to physical fitness, but some of the most dramatic health benefits for the owner are psychological.

Therapeutic institutions provide animals for some of their patients to raise as part of the recovery process. Patients are given responsibility to care for another living thing. Studies have shown that pets help patients recovered from troubled pasts, and live healthier, longer lives. Another specific use of pets being beneficial to their owner is their use as guide dogs for the visually impaired.

Even though there are many valuable health benefits given to people who foster animals, owning a pet provides many difficult challenges. Many animals leave behind dander that may severely worsen allergies. The behavior and upkeep of pet animals may also provide a large amount of stress to their owners. In some cases, animals injure their owners or other people nearby sometimes even fatally. After all, animals aren’t meant to be domesticated; their natural home will always be in the wild.

Because pets are living things, with their own personality and interests, there are a wide variety of laws set to protect both the pet and the owner. A large number of states have law in place that limits the quantity of pets in a home, and regulates which types of animals are allowed. Many apartment and condominium complexes don’t allow their residents to raise pets, which is difficult for pet owners, but ultimately helps to ensure that pets are raised in a more suitable environment.

Although pets aren’t for everybody, they have a considerable list of benefits, physically and emotionally. Adopting pets is a great opportunity to provide a quality place to live for an animal in need of love and attention.
