Ready to start mountain biking? Great choice. But first, you’ll need a bike. And not just any bike. You need to find the right bike for your unique riding style. To help out, lets go over each of the major styles, and look at what kind of bikes they use.

Cross Country

Cross country mountain biking, often abbreviated as “XC”, is probably the most popular discipline in today’s mountain biking world. Cross country riding is simply riding on trails, with an emphasis on covering distance and gaining elevation rather than intense, technical downhill riding. Of course, this is not to say that cross country avoids thrilling downhill riding. To the contrary, the downhill portion of the ride is often the most anticipated portion. However, this downhill must be earned though strenuous and challenging climbing.

To facilitated this type of riding, cross country bikes are often lighter than most other mountain bike designs. A light bike is a fast bike, though this comes at the price of reduced durability. Additional, these cross country bikes are not as smooth on descents, and are not generally designed to take jumps. However, their light weight makes them ideal for the majority of riders simply looking to cruise the trails. Riders typically wear normal biking clothing, with nothing out of the ordinary required.

If you’re the type of person who wants to simply get out on the trails and put in some miles while enjoying glorious views and thrilling descents, a cross country setup is probably for you. These bikes are generally versatile, and will serve you well in a variety of contexts.

Downhill

Downhill biking is a very different discipline than cross country. Downhill biking focuses strictly on running the bikes downhill for maximum thrills. To allow this, the bikes are so heavy that they are almost impossible to ride for very long distances uphill. However, this beefy build allows riders to attempt things that those on cross country bikes could never dream of. A typical downhill run might have the riders screaming down a ski slope at 40mph, taking hairpin turns at high speeds, careening through fields of boulders, and flying high above the ground off of a jump. Downhill biking is about speed and flow, and those who master the necessary skills have access to an unlimited amount of thrills.

To allow for this type of riding, downhill bikes have overbuilt frames, long travel front and read suspensions, and a myriad of other components designed to take maximum abuse. Again, all this extra beef makes the bikes very heavy and thus difficult to pedal for any sort of distance. In order to ride, downhillers employ two major methods of getting up the hill. The first method, shuttling, involves filling a vehicles with bikes, driving to the top of the trailhead (or as near as is possible), and completing the run. Once at the bottom, the process can be repeated (assuming there is a designated driver), or the vehicle parked at the top can be retrieved later on. This method works well if the trail is road accessible. The other method is to buy a lift pass at a ski resort during the summer. These resorts offer specially designed closed course downhill runs accessible by ski lift, which offers an optimal riding experience for those fortunate enough to have access to them.

In addition to overbuilt bikes, downhillers also require extra safety equipment because of the high speeds and potential dangers involved. Full body armor and full face helmets are almost mandatory for the serious downhiller. These do not guarantee the riders safety by any means, but they are very helpful in reducing injuries due to crashes.

Overall, downhill is a very exciting and demanding discipline of mountain biking. Because of the risks, expense, and logistical hurdles involved, it is certainly not for everyone. However, if you are a thrill seeker by nature, downhill mountain biking is most certainly for you.

Freeride

Freeriding is somewhat similar to downhill in terms of its focus on thrill seeking over covering terrain. However, the two disciplines differ in that freeriding is more oriented on jumps and stunts rather than speed down a course. Freeriders will find drops, jumps, skinny logs, and pretty much anything else to ride off of. Like downhill bikes, freeride bikes are overbuilt, but tend to be designed to by slightly quicker and more maneuverable than straight downhill bikes. Many riders who freeride also downhill, and vice versa, since much of the equipment and skillsets are the same.

All-Mountain

A somewhat newish category, all mountain is for the rider who enjoys a bit everything. Light enough to take serious climbs, but beefy enough to survive rough downhills, all-mountain bikes take advantage of all the latest technologies to provide a best of both worlds experience. These bikes allow their riders to do epic XC rides one day, and lift served downhill runs the next. However, due to the compromising nature of these bikes, they will not be the fastest at all these various endeavors. However, for the all around recreationalist, these bikes are often an excellent choice.

For Americans in landlocked areas, it may be easy to forget how central fishing is to the world’s economies and cultures. So feast on this whopper of a statistic: two hundred million people owe their jobs (directly or indirectly) to fisheries. No wonder, then, that per capita, we each eat over twenty-one kilograms of fish per year. That’s a lot of brain food.

And, perhaps most impressively of all, according to one estimate, there are thirty-eight million fishers in the world.

But for a large minority of those thirty-eight million people, the journey to the lake or stream in search of a big fish (or a big fish story) does not have to do with livelihood or survival: it has to with recreation. (Put another way: they don’t fish to survive, they fish to live.) Though humans have been fishing since at least the Paleolithic period (forty thousand years ago), and though fishing was one of the first activities to allow for permanent human settlements in certain areas (thus giving us an alternative to the roving hunter-gatherer lifestyles of the earliest people), people have fished for sport since at least the middle ages. A 1496 treatise on fishing for fun was one of the first English works to roll off of a printing press. The sport really took off during the late Renaissance period, and even gave rise to one of the classics of early modern English prose, Izaak Walton’s The Compleat Angler.

Walton argued that fishing - as his subtitle had - a contemplative man’s recreation (”or woman’s,” we would add). Millions of people since the seventeenth-century book’s publication have agreed. Fly fishing, after all, first developed among the English aristocrac - not among people who needed the fish to survive. And though fishing hasn’t had the gentried associations in America that it may have had in Europe, it remains a site where people compete with each other, tell stories (”There was this one I caught last summer”), contemplate nature, and get away from the daily grind - an activity with its own dedicated subculture, as well as its unique and irreplaceable value in the larger culture. (Just think of all the intellectuals and writers who valued the time to think and spiritual clarity that fishing afforded them, or the great books that fish hunts have inspired: Moby-Dick; The Old Man and the Sea; Deliverance; A River Runs Through It.)

A would-be fisher’s initiation to the sport should probably begin with a trip to the library - to learn about nearby streams, lakes and waterways in your area, the kinds of fish available (nature guidebooks are a good bet), and the laws regulating fishing in your area.

After that, you’ll want to consider buying or borrowing a rod. (Some fishing resorts will offer equipment for rent; beginners may want to avail themselves of this option, since nothing is more annoying than a closetful of expensive sports equipment that you never get around to using. Why not find out if you like the sport before you buy the accoutrements?) Fiberglass fishing rods are often recommended for newcomers to the sport. They don’t cost as much a bamboo or graphite rods, and they don’t break easily. (Graphite affords extra agility - and a corresponding fragility - for those experienced fishers who need it.) Rods vary in length as well as material, but the rule of thumb is: short, flexible rods for places where you can’t cast your line too far (because of overhanging tree branches, perhaps); long rods for uninterrupted water with moderate winds; short semi-stiff rods if you’re after big tough fish.
As for baits, lures, and tackle, well, the options are too wide to generalize about. Everything depends on the kind of fish that can be caught in the area you intend to explore. (That’s why I recommended you start with a trip to the library.)

A word about catch-and-release: as more and more fishers realize the importance of keeping worldwide fisheries well-stocked, they are increasingly opting to throw fish back into the water upon catching them (expediently enough to ensure the fish’s survival). When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho, vacations spent on the South Fork of the Snake River definitely top the list. The river starts in Yellowstone National Park and flows straight to the Palisades Reservoir via Grand Teton National Park. The Best Time For South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the area begins from the last week of June to the first week of July with the appearance of the Salmon flies, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones. Late autumn is the favorite time to fish for many of the local fisherman since water levels are considerably lower than in the spring.

This gives anglers the chance to wade in new areas from Yellowstone National Park to Henry’s Fork. The fish are ready to put up a good fight by this part of the season. In the winter, there is some shore fishing, but actually wading in the cold river isn’t recommended. Gear Tips For South Fork Fly Fishing

Since many of the brown trout in the river weigh over ten pounds, stick to a four to five weight rod in the beginning of the South Fork fly fishing season. Tackle, on the other hand, should depend on what you see along the shoreline. Early in the season, use Salmon fly patterns such as Birds Stone and Hairy Mary on a size 4-8 hook. Nymphs such as Girdle Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, and Black Rubberlegs can also provide you with an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Sallies and Yellow Stimulators imitate the Yellow Sallies that appear at this time as well.

The later part of July and early August bring mayflys and Pale Morning Duns begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and slowly move to an 18 hook by the end of September. Try patterns such as Pink Cahill Parachute, Biot Dun, and Wooly Buggers. This is also a great time to break out the caddis like Elk Hair and Hemingway patterns. When it comes to fishing in the late fall (from August to October) think hoppers, Blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is some of the best in North America. The river is close to Jackson Hole lodging, Yellowstone National Park, and has plenty of large cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. For year-round fishing adventures, this is definitely the place to go.
