The Style Of Your Billiard Room Is Very Important

Posted by Nbisea in Sports

If you have ever been to a billiard hall, then you know how they are set up. Many billiard tables are placed in a large room, so that many people can play. In the past, however, tables for billiards were not set up this way.

A wealthy family would have a table in their home, situated in their billiard room. If you own a table yourself, then you know that it is almost necessary to keep up this tradition because of the large space that a billiard table takes up, as well as the room needed all around the table for proper play.

A billiard room has to be large enough so that you can hit the cue ball from any angle and station around the table. This usually means having at least 8 feet of free space all around the table. For a 7 foot table, this means having a room that is at least 15 feet by 19 feet.

Bigger tables need bigger rooms. This can be quite difficult to arrange in a modern home without placing the table in your living room. Of course, there are many game rooms and basements that are bigger than that; however, many people like to put other things in with their billiard table.

Consequently, many don’t leave enough room around their table to make the playing of a game possible. In a billiard hall, sometimes there is enough room around the tables to play properly, but often there is not. Some places place the tables so close together that if someone else is playing at an adjacent billiard pool table, then the two people bump into each other.

This is very inconvenient, but it is still possible to play that way. Proper billiard lighting is also an important aspect for the billiards room and most upscale bars and billiard club venues do provide good, over-the-table billiard lights.

The usual decoration for a billiard room is pub style. A lot of bars use that style, but other styles are used as well depending on the location. People like the pup style because it gives a hunting lodge feel to the building. Dark colors are usually used, with a lot of dark wood and leather.

Pictures that go along with that theme are used as well, such as hunters, foxes and dogs. The billiard tables are very important to the room, so lighting is important as well so that people can see properly. Overhead lighting can light the tables without overpowering the whole room. The style of each billiard hall can really change what kind of people go there to play.

A billiard room can be a great place to hang out. Whether in your own home, in a bar or at a club, playing a billiard game is always a fun activity. The size of the room is very important so that people will have enough space to make their shots. The style of the decorations is important as well, so that the room will have the feel that you are looking for.

Playing Tennis With The Right Shoes

Posted by Robertoms2003 in Sports

A kind of athletic shoe used for tennis is made of a special flexible material with a sole made of rubber. Initially, the tennis shoes were termed as sports shoes but these days they are categorized as casual wear and are considered different from the other sports shoes. However, it is very important to buy the correct pair of tennis shoes that can suit your feet and provide you with complete comfort. In this regard, the buying of tennis shoes can simply be compared with going for a date.

Just like, you would like to know about the history of the person you are going out on a date with, you should be familiar with all the features of the tennis shoes before buying it. This is important because, if you do a thorough research and then select your shoes, it will result in a long lasting and a comfortable relation. On the other hand, a wrong selection can result in a lot of blisters and twisted ankles. There is also another important point of similarity between the two conceptions. Just like at times, we do not want to go for the looks of the person and try to find out the good qualities in them; likewise, in tennis shoes it is suggested to go for the comfort and support the shoes can provide and not its design.

Before buying a pair of tennis shoes, it is important to know about the kind of feet you possess. Either the feet can be supinated or pronated. Supinated feet are wider with a high arch and leave a crescent shaped footprint. Hence, these kinds of feet require shoes that can provide enough room for the toes. Also, the supinated feet require a shoe with special cushioning in the arch region. On the contrary, the pronated feet are flatter and require shoes that can offer complete support all around the foot especially on the medial side of the foot. These types of feet preferably require mid-cut tennis shoes.

Tennis is a sport that requires speed, agility and endurance not only of the players but also of the equipment. However, it is not possible to have a proper serve and an excellent backhand without the perfect tennis shoes. A good tennis shoe is a one that can handle running, jumping, lunging, side-to-side court coverage, constant movement back and forth to the net and the quick pivots that are required in a tennis match. Hence, all the proper tennis shoes are designed with lateral support to bear the rigidity of the lateral movement in the game and are able to endure the quick starts and stops associated with the match.

Many people still prefer to wear their standard running shoes for their tennis matches. However, there is a lot of difference between the two kinds of shoes. The running shoes are designed for forward movement and cannot support the quick lateral movements needed for the game of tennis. Moreover, they have thick and soft heels to increase the cushioning effect. This is done to lessen the impact of running, but they do not support the stability required for the side movements in tennis. Contrarily, the tennis shoes are heavier and made of stiffer material. They also have flat and durable soles to prevent stumbling and sliding during the match.

It is, however, important to change your shoes after a specific period. It is advised that the tennis shoes should be replaced after 500 miles of wear. Though, it is difficult to estimate when you have completed these 500 miles of wear, the signs of wear and tear will clearly show on your shoes. This will be an indication of the failing of your tennis shoes. An important sign will be the wearing away of the tread pattern on the sole of the shoes.

With the various brands and special technologies available today, there are a lot of varieties of tennis shoes to select from. These tennis shoes will fulfill all your needs irrespective of the kind of feet you have. So, now whether you need to support your ankles, knees or shins or you have high arches, there is a specific tennis shoe especially for you.

Shoe manufacturers have always tried to make suitable changes keeping in view of the changing time and the choice of users.

Choosing a right pair of tennis shoes can be a tricky affair. However with right guidance as described below, the job of choosing perfect tennis shoes will be a lot easier.

* Do not go in only for brand names and looks. Looks do not matter as long as the shoe serves your purpose and though brand name has some worth, they should not be the sole criterion to choose a tennis shoe. You should give more consideration to its functionality.

* Choose tennis shoes according to your foot type. The foot should fit comfortably without any stretching.

* Many people overlook to check the robustness of the heel box. A heel box is the part of the tennis shoes that covers the heel of your feet and keeps your feet in control while playing. Ideally the heel box should be made of leather with some rubber or plastic as support. To see the resistance of your heel box, you can try squeezing or bending it over.

* For sports persons, it is a good idea to take your doctor`s and coach s suggestions while buying tennis shoes.

* Flexibility is an important aspect to look at while choosing tennis shoes. The ideal shoes should bend easily. In addition, tennis shoes should have cushioning and shock absorption quality. It helps while playing tennis on hard courts.

* Watch out for the air max unit in the heel area of your tennis shoes. The air max unit provides great protection to your feet especially on hard court surface.

* Checking the outsole and toe guard of the tennis shoes is important as they ensure durability of the shoes.

* The upper part of the shoes covers the fore and mid foot and saves you from any unforeseen injury. Hence ultimate care should be given to see if your feet fit comfortably in the upper region.

* It is a good idea to replace your worn out tennis shoes with a new one to save you from unwanted injuries.

Many popular brands today manufacture tennis shoes customised to men`s and women`s category. Because of their difference in physique, women sports players need shoes with extra comfort and cushioning and sports manufactures make shoes exclusively meant for women tennis players.

Also for different surfaces, different types of tennis shoes are available. Like the structural and material design of them meant for playing on clay court surface are different than that of shoes meant for playing on hard court surface. Sports companies also hire top tennis and other sports persons to merchandise their products. However, comfort rather than brand should be the first priority while buying tennis shoes.

David Coulthard: An F1 Driver’s Life In The Fast Lane

Posted by Tribune2 in Sports

Monaco resident and Formula One driver David Coulthard will be driving the last race of his career soon - the Scottish born driver has had a long, often tumultuous career full of drama and danger.

As a teenager, Coulthard won the first ever McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award, before moving on to Formula 3 racing. Despite a broken leg early in his racing career, he quickly earned championships in Formula 3 races. After this, he moved up to Formula 3000 racing, eventually reaching third place.

Coulthard became the test driver for Williams-Renault and helped to improve the technology behind the car. Though he intended to remain a tester for the team, a tragic accident brought him to the track as a racer. Aryton Senna was a former world champion who joined the team in 1994, only to be killed in a fatal crash three races into the season. Senna’s death is the last driver to be killed while driving a Formula One car.

After Senna’s death, Coulthard was promoted to the racing team, alongside teammate Damon Hill. He drove second car most of his first season, even stepping aside for Nigel Mansell to drive four races. Over the following seasons, he would join several different teams, though he had ups and downs in the races. After several disappointing seasons on the McLaren team, he joined Red Bull racing for his final seasons.

Coulthard is fourth on the highest all-time scores list, and is the top British scorer - though he never won a world championship, he is a legend in Formula One racing. His score is higher than many drivers who have won championships, yet the title eluded him his entire career. He says that he had a world-championship winning car, but he failed to win it.

He was nearly killed in an airplane crash in 2000. Engine trouble caused the private plane to crash during an emergency landing in France. The pilot and co-pilot were killed, while the other three passengers survived.

His off-track exploits are notable, as the photogenic driver has been romantically linked to models from all over the world, though he denies many of these accounts. There is a museum dedicated to him in his hometown of Twynholm, which is run by a local fan. Around the time of his retirement, he announced that he is going to be a father in December.

Coulthard has lived in Monaco for some time now, since he enjoyed both the landscape and the tax-free status. He helps run and partly owns a popular Monaco hotel, which fills up a year in advance of the races in Monaco. The hotel has a great location in Fontvieille, as it is perfect for traveling back and forth to the paddock.

While in Monaco, David Coulthard will remain with Red Bull Racing, though he won’t be on the team. He’ll work within the sport in some capacity, and may return to some form of racing in the future. He plans to remain in Monaco for the time, while he awaits the birth of his first child.

How To Buy A Wetsuit

Posted by Galway in Sports

For those with a love of water sports, it quickly becomes apparent that you need something that is going to keep out the cold and prevent you from shrivelling up like a prune, particularly if you’re going to be surfing or diving anywhere around the UK, given its cool water temperature and infamy for rubbish weather.

You can go to any sports shop and find wetsuits for sale but where to start? Do you just go for the one that looks nice or do you realise that, financially, this is a pretty major purchase and will be an absolute must when you’re in the water. So, if you’re in the market for a wetsuit, do a little research and find out what you need to know. Here are a few pointers:

The first thing to consider is the fit. This is essential as with an ill fitting wetsuit you will lose more heat than you save, defeating the object and making you cold. A good fitting wetsuit will allow a little water in. This water is then quickly heated by your body, bringing it to body temperature. This is held against your skin, preventing any further heat loss. If the suit is too loose, it will allow too much water exchange and you will not stay warm. Check for a close fit on ankles and wrists. If the suit is too tight, enough water will not be warmed and you will still not maintain body temperature.

To avoid rashing, it is also important that the suit is comfortable and does not rub anywhere. Any collections of sand or salt water will soon tell you that your suit is too loose but not before you feel the pain. A good fitting suit will also ensure that the suit lasts longer, with no areas of unnecessary wear.

The performance of a wetsuit is something that needs to be negotiated. Put simply, performance is the amount of stretch a wetsuit offers. More stretch equals less resistance. However, super stretchy suits offer great performance for those who like to show off their tricky manoeuvres but less durability because the suit will wear out quicker, particularly around the knees.

Warmth is a very important issue when purchasing a wetsuit. This means that you need to take into consideration where you will be spending most of your time in the water. Obviously, if you are a regular in the waters off Australia or Egypt then it’s somewhat different to what is required of a wetsuit that spends most of its time off the coast of Scotland. Suits can be purchased with a 2mm thickness right up to a 7mm and it will make a drastic difference to get one at the wrong end of the scale.

It is important that you are comfortable in your suit but this has to be factored in when you are considering your performance and durability needs.

Neoprene is the fabric of wetsuits. It is a closed cell rubber foam to be precise and can be lined with a jersey fabric. Various degrees of stretch are available as choice. Seams are necessary on the suit to make it a better fit. However, this is negotiable. You can have a suit with few seams which will make it more flexible (better performance) but this will be balanced by the fact that it will not be such a good fit (less durable).

The stitching of a wetsuit will depend on whether it is aimed for summer or winter use. Flatlocked stitching is very strong and flexible but allows water to seep through needle holes. This is good for summer suits. Blind stitching will normally be used on more expensive winter suits and does not allow water through.

So you can see there are many things to take into consideration when buying your wetsuit. Apart from the above you will also need to look at what the style and colour choices are and also consider the price because there is quite a vast price range. However, get it right and you could be surfing, diving or rafting in much more comfort and for longer than you could manage without.

The History Of Figure Skating

Did you know that archaeological evidence showing that figure skating on ice rinks has been around since prehistoric times has been found?!

This conjures up visions of ape-like people with bones in their hair, twirling and pirouetting - yet this hilarious idea is actually true. Primitive animal-bone ice skates have been found in Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland, and archaeologists believe they would have been used to cross large patches of ice efficiently.

Ice skating has been loved in this country, and public skating in places like Hong Kong, as well as figure skating in Hong Kong and elsewhere have made skating activities a global phenomenon. How far have ice events like figure skating come since their origins?

William Fitzstephen, a servant of Thomas Beckett, was the first to make mention of ice skating (although not on ice rinks) in writing. His book, written around the 12th century, described children playing and fighting on the ice with skates: “If the moors in Finsbury and Moorfield freeze over, children from London play. Some of the children have attached bones to their ankles, and carry well-worn sticks. They fly across the ice like birds, or well-fired arrows”.

Edges were added to ice skates in the 13th or 14th century, with the Dutch addition of steel edges. After experimenting with the height to width ratio of the edges, it was found that sticks were no longer needed to propel the skater, and the design that figure skaters in Hong Kong use today was born.

The history of actual figure skating was first described in print in 1772, in a book by a British artillery lieutenant named Robert Jones. He describes basic figure skating forms used in Hong Kong today like figure eights and circles, with the text which was aimed quite narrowly at a purely male audience.

The publication of this text saw the split in ice events and public skating, into those that focus on speed, and those that focus on art (figure skating).
Jackson Haines is widely regarded as the founder of figure skating in the modern tradition. He was the first skater to incorporate ballet moves and dancing into his skating, with moves that mean the skates leave the ice rink, his specialty.

He is credited with inventing the sit spin, and modified the ice skate blade so that it was better suited to the maneuverability needed for figure skating in Hong Kong and worldwide.

However, Haines innovation went largely unrecognized for a time, with British rigidity in figure skating still remaining the accepted form of expression on the ice rink. Haines promoted the style elsewhere in Europe, with great success, and public skaters in Hong Kong and other Asian countries also began to experiment with his techniques.

His American colleagues opposed the style, as did the English, but the man who died of tuberculosis at the tender age of 31 has left quite a mark on the world of ice events.

Today, figure skating in Hong Kong, one of the sport’s most devoted countries, as well as elsewhere in the world, recognizes four main ice events. Single skating events for both men and women, pair skating, ice dancing and synchronized skating are all popular on the ice rink. While the US, Canada and Russia have dominated traditionally, figure skaters from Hong Kong and the rest of Asia have shown exceptional talent lately.

Resources: The Mega Ice Ice Rink is the only international sized Ice Rink in Hong Kong bringing world class Ice Hockey, Ice skating and Figure Skating. A multi-purpose venue designed for performances, concerts, exhibitions, corporate and private functions and birthday parties.
