Cruising For Those Afraid Of Water

Posted by Vgevge in Cruises

It may seem strange to imagine that people who are afraid of water will go on a cruise, and yet every year many thousands of people do exactly that. Some of these people have very deep seated fears of water, and may not be able to swim as a result of that fear. Other people may not even consider that they are afraid, but discover a slight fear once they set foot on their first cruise ship and watch the firm land they left drifting into the far horizon. Still others have fears that are almost hidden, and do not admit it even to themselves, but let the anxiety hide deep down, causing them to enjoy the trip less.

Considering the cost of cruises, and also what a fantastic experience they can be, it is worth giving some thought to points that may in some small way help to alleviate any fears, especially those which are based on misunderstood facts, or simply myths which have no basis in reality.

One of the most useful things to consider doing is to book your first cruise as part of a group. Going with a large group of familiar people will help you to feel less afraid. The sight of familiar faces will help to bring some of the associations you have of dry land onto the ship. These people will know you, and will be able to support you. Don’t be afraid to admit your worries - that way people can be more supportive and sympathetic. It is not a weakness; we all have our own personal fears and worries, many of which are quite irrational and even absurd! Certainly the fear of water is entirely understandable, yet there are points to mention which might help in some way to calm nerves.

One of the most common fears is, of course, to do with the ship sinking. These cruise ships are many hundreds of meters long, and hundreds of meters high. They are the length of several football pitches, and as high as tower blocks. The huge size of these ships means that they are highly unlikely to ever sink, and even if they did, it would be such a ludicrously slow process that there would never be any cause for fear that it would sink so quickly you wouldn’t be saved.

The other thing of course is that all cruise ships have more than enough lifeboats for every single passenger on board, and enough life jackets for everyone too. In addition to which, the seas and routes taken by cruise ships today are so busy that you are highly unlikely to ever be far from another ship, which would simply come along and pick you up.

But all this is highly improbable. Although people will undoubtedly be thinking of the Titanic, it is worth remembering that not only it was almost a hundred years ago, but the crew didn’t bother taking enough lifeboats, there were serious design flaws, it was sailed in a way that was strictly against the design recommendations, along with many other factors which made the disaster inevitable.

Oddly, people who are afraid of cruising on a ship have no problem flying - this is over the same stretch of water yet 30,000 feet higher up! Statistically, cruising is the safest means of transportation. You’re more likely to have an accident cycling to work. In fact, more people are being injured or killed every year by having a coconut fall on their head than have died from a cruise ship accident in the last 25 years.

Packing Advice For Cruise Holidays

Posted by Vgevge in Cruises

If you have never been on a cruise holiday before, then there are a few points worth mentioning concerning what you can expect, and what you should be prepared for. There are routines and requirements which you’ll find on a cruise ship which you won’t experience anywhere else, and it can catch the unwary travelers on the wrong foot if they haven’t had the experience before.

The first thing to consider is the clothes to pack. Obviously, this will depend greatly on the type of cruise and the planned destinations. Usually, they are themed and fairly similar in climate, but it is possible that during the course of your cruise you’ll visit countries which have different climates, and being prepared for such unexpectednesses will be of a great benefit. Going from a hot Mediterranean climate to a chillier autumnal climate should be well-planned in advance.

Another factor to bear in mind is that you will need at least one very smart, formal outfit. Professional portrait photographs are always taken of every guest, and the dinner will require formal wear. Be very aware that shorts, skirts, tank tops and swim wear will not be allowed in the dining areas, and so you will need clothes and outfits that you can wear for these occasions.

One more moment to mention is that your suitcase will be taken from you at the port, and will be delivered to your cabin. However, this is sometimes not for several hours after you have arrived at your cabin yourself, and in some rare cases can even be on the next day. In a few exceptional instances it has even been a matter of several days before suitcase and cruiser have been reunited. For this reason, it is essential that you have a carryon hand luggage bag which will contain important items that will allow you to continue enjoying your cruise whilst you wait for your main luggage.

Your essential items, medications, money, sunglasses, a change of clothes and other important items should be kept with you. Cameras and video cameras might be considered safer with you, and you can enjoy taking photos of each other before you have transformed into lobsters.

As far as your luggage is concerned, be aware that suitcases are often stacked whilst being transported to and from the cruise ship - sometimes as much as a dozen suitcases high. In this case, you want your suitcase to be able to withstand this pressure, and a hard case will be of great benefit. These hard cases are often made of either the same material that car bumpers are made from, or in the case of the more expensive ones, the same material that crash helmets are made from. In any of these cases, your case will be much better protected than a soft, flexible material one that will crush under pressure.

You will be provided with tags by the cruise line, and you would be well advised to make sure they are securely attached to your luggage to ensure their speedy return to you. Packing a spare bag is also worth considering, because, almost certainly, you will return at the end of the cruise with far more artifacts than you left with, and unless you intend tipping your clothes into the sea to make room, you’ll need to have something safe to stow them.
