Preparing For The Unknown: Your Emergency Flashlight

Posted by Emily123 in Technology

There are many reasons for the power to go out. The most often cause in my area is wild fires taking down electrical poles or burning up the electrical stations. You may face tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, or rolling brown outs, what ever the reason, electrical outages are difficult to predict as far as exact times and conditions, but it’s easy to understand that at some time and place, you will be without electricity. What else is going on at that point you can’t predict, but if you know you can provide your own light in such situations, whatever they may be, you’ll rest easier and feel more secure as you go about your life.

Many nocturnal animals are equipped with eyes that function well in low light levels. We humans are not; our eyes need light to see. In our modern times where we live with so many conveniences, lighting up the dark is easy with just the flick of a switch. And that is great, as long as the electricity can get from its source to us, but it’s prudent to remember the electrical grid is fragile and can easily be wiped out by so many possibilities. So keep some emergency lighting around; keep your family secure by planning ahead and being prepared.

It’s a generally accepted fact that at least some of your emergency lighting will be flashlights. Candles will work if they’re all you have, but for ease of use, portability and reliability, flashlights are the way to go.

There are many different flashlights available on the market today. Let’s look at what your basic options are.

The most basic and common flashlight option is a traditional flashlight which uses batteries to light an incandescent bulb. This is a very inexpensive and readily available form of flashlight. Batteries, while expensive, are also common and have a pretty good shelf life. Probably the biggest drawback to the traditional flashlight is that the incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy (relatively speaking) and tend to burn out rather quickly. So, you’ll need a good supply of batteries and bulbs if you’re relying on a traditional, incandescent flashlight.

If you want to get away from batteries, you can look to kinetically powered flashlights to fill your emergency power needs. These lights generally work by the user shaking, cranking, or squeezing to produce power in the unit. Obviously, not depending on batteries is the best feature of these lights. Do note that their light is not as strong as a battery powered flashlight nor will they light for very long before needing to be powered up again. But not needing batteries is a big plus, and you should also note that the quality of these lights goes up with price. Look for a more expensive model from a reliable brand for a truly better battery-free flashlight.

A true improvement on the traditional battery powered flashlight is the LED bulb. These bulbs address most of the problems associated with incandescent bulbs: they use less energy (that means fewer batteries), last longer (literally thousands of hours), and are quite shock resistant (no need for replacement bulbs). Light and beam quality is not quite a good with LED as with an incandescent bulb, but technology is improving all the time, and, as with the manual powered flashlights, buying a higher quality (yes, that means more expensive) flashlight will yield a higher quality light.

So, for your emergency flashlight needs, I recommend a combination of LED battery powered lights and a manual powered light or two. Look for quality lights that will pay for themselves in the long run since you won’t have to replace them nearly as often. Keep a flashlight in your car, in your emergency kit, and in your home so that you’ll be ready the next time the lights go out.

How Bridge Design And Construction Made The World A Smaller Place

Posted by Dominicdonaldson in Technology

The thirst for knowledge and the need to create have been the cornerstones of man’s progress over the last millennium. Without the desire to see what lies over the horizon and without questioning what we have been told by and learnt from previous generations we’d all still be living in caves.

Man’s ability to be innovative and attempt things that to previous generations would have seemed incredible, impossible or unbelievable has been the catalyst in creating the modern world. One of the most fascinating areas this has manifested itself is in bridge design and construction.

Travel, commerce, expansion, migration all have been influenced greatly by bridge design and construction. It has led to swathes of people being able to travel from one area to another and create new communities and sometimes whole countries. The ability to move across rivers, ravines and difficult terrain without any great problem has opened up trade routes and created dialogue amongst different communities and continents that would not previously have been possible.

Bridge design and construction can be broken down into three main types; simple, continuous and cantilever. These three basic design principles then cover all the different types of bridge design and construction including bean and girder, arch and truss.

Beam and girder bridges are usually made of metal or reinforced concrete. Beam and girder bridge design and construction has benefitted from the introduction of computer technology with many designs now owing a great deal to computer stress analysis. The design and construction of such buildings is now far more economical and predictable as a consequence.

The term ‘arch bridges’ includes constructions we know as suspension bridges. The bridge design and construction includes abutments at each end; the curve. All weight from both the bridge and its load is transferred into a horizontal thrust which is held by the abutments.

Truss bridges consist of connected pieces that carry load through tension or compression. They are one of the oldest types of modern bridge design and in terms of engineering are relatively straightforward to understand. Due to its efficient use of materials it was a popular form of bridge design and construction in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early American settlers constructed many truss bridges as they moved west across the continent because the wood was so abundant. It was easy to make the pieces needed for a truss bridge from wood and fit them together.

Erskine Bridge, Scotland - Beam and girder bridges are very common. They are usually the type used in road and rail construction because of their straightforward design, strength and longevity. The Erskine Bridge in Scotland is the A898 road that connects the M8 and A82. It enables 26,000 vehicles to cross the River Clyde every day.

The Pont du Gard, France - This aqueduct constructed by the Roman Empire is an example of arch bridge design and construction. The ability to make these types of construction stretched back to 1300 BC and so there are may examples to be found throughout the world. It is believed the Pont du Gard was constructed in the first century A.D. The fascinating thing about this bridge is that the stone was cut to such precise dimensions that there was no need for mortar as a fixing agent; completely unique to arch bridges. The Pont du Gard is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Sky Gate Bridge R, Japan - The truss bridge design and construction may be old and simple but that does not mean it is no longer used. Kansai International Airport lies on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. The island is connected to the mainland by the longest double-decked truss bridge in the world which carries both automobile and rail traffic.

The Whole Benefits Of USB Technology

Posted by Musa in Technology

On the technological front, a lot of advancements have taken place in the past few years. A whole of gadgets, instruments and other gizmos that are being released each day worldwide are incorporated with few of these technological changes. On USB technology front too, a lot of changes have taken place. With these changes a lot benefits can be drawn in our daily usage.

Most of the modern and diverse gadgets make use of USB technology these days. No doubts; USB technology has been making its mark in the computers for past so many years. But now, its presence has been felt across other devices too. Most of these devices aren’t even connected to computers remotely. All of us know that USB ports and cables are widely used to connect computers with other gadgets. The scenario is having a facelift these days. Even the latest digital cameras are designed in a way so as to take the advantage of the ever improving USB technology. With digital cameras, you can transfer the photos from your computer to it. These days, most digital cameras come with an inbuilt flash memory card reader. These reader’s can be plugged into a USB port of a computer and can allow the transfer of photos to take place effectively.

USB technology’s usage is not just confined to tangible devices. Modern day USB ports are equipped to handle wireless technology too. Thus, it’s now possible to use a wireless keyboard or a wireless mouse with your computer by connecting them through a known device to the USB ports. It is also possible to connect your computer to a wireless network by plugging in a wireless antenna into it via USB port.

One cannot stop describing USB technology without ever mentioning about portable USB drives. These devices are very simple and are easy to use. They are basically flash memory chips that have on one end of it; a USB connector. They are readily available in the market in different storage capacities of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB. They can be successfully employed in transferring and backing up the files from one computer to another.

These gadgets are incorporated in other devices like watches and pens. These devices are safe to use and are generally encrypted to ensure, data saved in them are secure. Their usage is also uncomplicated. They can be operated by unlocking the device through a password. Few USB drives are also intelligent enough to recognize fingerprints. As the usage of portable USB drives are made in different devices, it has become a virtual nightmare for security experts in different corporations to keep them in a safer place.

USB connections are considered to be very versatile as they can transmit copious amount of electrical currents at a same rate as that of data transfer. This very attribute of the device makes it usage in the portable devices a successful one.

Portable devices can have their batteries recharged via a USB connection while data transfer is taking place at concurrently. It is also possible to have a computer mouse connected to a USB port and have a heater built in it so that your hands are always warm while you are operating the computer. So, the possibilities are endless with the ever changing USB technology. The key is to identify and then tapping to the advantage of mankind.

Pluses And Minuses Of Using Bluetooth

Posted by JeremyR in Technology

Please Advertise Here

While using the Bluetooth feature, you can run through a lot of advantages and at the same time run into a lot of disadvantages. With about every great technology, there has to be something that makes it less than perfect.

And I have to say that there’s probably no such thing as a perfect product. And this I will show you right now. A few advantages and disadvantages of Bluetooth includes the following.

Widely Used:

Bluetooth is now really popular and keeps getting more popular as time passes by. It is now widely used across countries and almost by everyone. Companies are taking the benefit by using this in their new and future products to make life much easier.

Pretty much very soon, you will be noticing quite a bit of technology will be wireless due to Bluetooth. As it is already, but most likely it will be more dominant. You can use Bluetooth on laptops, cell phones, music players, headsets, printers.

Feature Simplicity:

You don’t need to know much about technology in order to run Bluetooth. Anyone that doesn’t have no knowledge about the new technology can still be able to use the Bluetooth features due to its simplicity and the ease of use.

I think that the simplicity of it and the fact that it’s wire free makes it very widely used and utmost popular.

Free of Charge:

Best of all, you do not have to pay a penny for the service! It’s not an extra cell phone or cable bill that you have to add to your budget. Simply buy the technology and you’re done! All you need to do is connect it with what you are using.

There hasn’t been any reporting lately on companies that charge a monthly fee or any fee for people to use the Bluetooth feature.

Go Wireless!:

It allows you to stay cord free and do not have to worry about finding the correct place to connect that extra long cord. Avoid having to have a ton of cords wherever you go.

You may still need a few cords but not as much as you would without Bluetooth. You can also go to the internet wireless with this feature when you’re outside of your home.

Your in Control:

Even though you are able to exchange data across your cell phones, you still have the ability to keep your information private.

In order to make a transfer or allow someone to access the files on your phone, you will have to give them access by accepting or rejecting the request through your phone.

If you have the Bluetooth feature enabled on your phone and not disabled while using it, others that you may not even know request to send you a file.

Battery Use

This occurs mostly on your cell phone but also occurs in other technology such as music players. You’re using up more battery power when you leave your Bluetooth enabled on your phone all day.

To disregard all this, the best thing that you can possibly do is disable it once you are completed with the transfer. It only takes a few seconds to enable and disable so it wouldn’t hurt to disable it once you are done using it.

Bluetooth Internet:

Throughout all devices, when using Bluetooth internet, the connection can sometimes run very slow so Bluetooth internet is not highly suggested for all cases.

As you can notice that there are quite a bit of advantages and fewer disadvantages. Bluetooth is a great thing to be using on all your devices that supports it.

You can do so much with it and includes cutting all the cords attached to your devices.

Ladders: Have You Seen What They Can Do?

Posted by Emily123 in Technology

I never thought I’d spend more than $400 for a ladder? Ha! But then again, I never thought I’d want anything more than the hand me down wooden step ladder my grandpa gave me. Now, I see what ladders are turning into, and I think I just might want one of those newfangled, fancy, extending, bending, multi-use, worthy- of-an-hour-long-informercial ladders!

First of all, I’ll admit, I’m impressed with a simple, run of the mill extension ladder. With a flick of the wrist, or the pull of a cord, you can take an innocent looking 12 foot ladder to 16 feet, or more! Call me naive, but I’m impressed.

Now, you show me a step ladder made for a stair well and I’m agog! I love those! I remember the first time my parents painted their stairwell with a more traditional ladder–it involved a veritable scaffolding of 2×4s bracing and balancing the ladder so my dad could reach the ceiling 12 to 16 feet above him. My mother warned, fretted, and paced the whole time he was up there. Even I, at 13 years old knew my dad was in a precarious position; if I had it to do over, I’d get him one of those stairway ladders.

How about those ladders that look simple enough at first–just a typical A-frame from 4-6 feet tall? But then you notice both sides extend, so it can become a stair way ladder (with sides extended unevenly). Or just a really tall A-frame (with sides extended evenly), or even taller as an extension ladder (unfold the A-frame and extend both ends. I’ve even seen ladders that are A-frame extension ladders that can be pulled apart, so you have two ladders! It blows my mind.

The newest type of ladder I’ve discovered is called a telescoping ladder. Sometimes people refer to extension ladders as telescoping ladders, and rightly so, but these are different! These telescoping ladders telescope rung by rung so you can not only choose your desired height, but also telescope this baby down to less than 3 feet tall!

It’s a ladder revolution for anyone who wants to transport a ladder but doesn’t have a truck, or who needs to store a ladder, but doesn’t have a big garage. Now your ladder can fit in the trunk of your car or at the bottom of your closet!

Now, you don’t have to spend over $400 on a ladder. You might just need a 6-foot aluminum stepladder and that will be just fine. But with the ladder options that are out there today, take the time to ask around, do some shopping, and really think about how you will need to use a ladder now and in the future.

$400 or more may seem like a lot to spend on a ladder today, but if it saves you from having to buy another one a few years down the road, or if it saves you from the 2×4 scaffolding-over-the-stairs scenario, it just might be worth it. With the quality of today’s best ladders, you could be looking at a true investment, even an heirloom for future generations!

Information About Bluetooth Technology And Proximity Advertising

Posted by KristiAmbrose in Technology

Bluetooth technology is currently the top selection for campaigning and marketing. In fact, Bluetooth marketing aka Proximity advertising has become increasingly popular overseas as the hottest way to get in touch with future or existent customers. Bluetooth is a major role player in this type of technology, it started in 2003 and all sorts of corporations and businesses have seen it to be incredibly usable.

By definition proximity marketing is “the localized wireless distribution of advertising content associated with a particular place. Transmissions can be received by individuals in that location that wish to receive them and have the necessary equipment to do so.” So if you own a cell phone and it’s in the proximity of a marketing broadcast that is “on air,” you would be able to acquire the substance or advert.

If you are a little less techy and you still don’t understand the process of what is going on here exactly or what all this means for the corporations using this technique, let me explain it a little better. Firstly, all of this makes a little more sense if you simplify the word proximity which means; The state, quality, sense, or fact of being near or next; closeness.

But let’s try a little example out so you can really understand the nitty gritty details! Say for instance that your walking through a shopping mall, and you just happened to pass a proximity broadcast station that was on air. If your phone is on, then the broadcast station will in turn “find” your phone. This will grant all the ads in the area to contact your cell phone. First and foremost, the program will ask you if you would like to receive this information from the supplier.

So they are really requiring for your permission, if its okay or if you would rather not receive the message to your phone. If you will, think of it as something like a moving billboard advertisement, except it’s going directly to your cell!

Another purposeful use for this type of advertising is for police forces in the United Kingdom to use it for missing persons. This is an excellent way for the police and other authoritative figures to broadcast a missing persons information and even their picture over peoples cell phones through use of bluetooth! It has also been used in several occasions to warn people in the area about robberies or muggings which will then of course let people know to be cautious and careful! So you see this isn’t just for use of companies but its also helpful for other reasons as well!

This type of advertising has been used for quite some time now in Europe and other various international locations. There are thousands of companies already taking full vantage of this type of marketing with many more on the way coming from the United States.

Bluetooth proximity marketing is merely the next technological step for businesses to take if they want to really get their business name out there. This is not only an incredibly quick procedure but also very effective. I wouldn’t be surprised if by next year this time there are millions upon millions of people taking advantage of the immense benefits that come from Bluetooth proximity advertising! Are you going to be one of them?
