Everything About Different DVD Formats

Posted by Ogierowitz in Electronics

If you want to burn DVD’s at home it is important to understand the differences in DVD disk formats, DVD drives and making sure that the finished product will play on the devices you want them to.

While DVD-Video is a term often used to define a movie, such as a rental, in actuality there are several different formats of DVD disks and the compatible drives that burn them as well as the devices that are capable of playing them. In order to get the desired results when burning DVD’s and video at home it is important to understand these different formats.

Different DVD Formats:

While DVD’s look like CD’s they are capable of holding about 7 times more information than CD’s and that allows an entire movie and then some to be burned onto one DVD.

1. DVD-R and DVD+R are recording formats that allow for one recording only. Once video is recorded to them they cannot be edited, erased or changed in any way. This type of disk is usually compatible with all DVD players including older ones.

2. DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. Also known as rewriteables, these DVD formats allow you to record to them, erase and record again. These types of disks usually only play on newer DVD players only. Make sure check the specifications of your DVD player to see what formats it is capable of playing.

The differences between the Different DVD Formats:

a) DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW are made for recording movies and video.

b) DVD-RAM disks were created for backing up computer data and hard drives and not for burning DVD’s. Most DVD players cannot read or play DVD-RAM disks.

What’s with the plus and minuses attached to the Different DVD formats?

Years ago when DVDs were first being made there was no industry standard and different companies were making different forms of DVDs hoping that their particular DVD type would become the main one used.

DVD-R and DVD-RW disks were made by Pioneer and data was only written to one layer of the DVDs surface. Other companies supported DVD+R and DVD+RW and as opposed to the ‘-’ disks, the ‘+’ disks had data stored on multiple layers of the disk. The plus and minus sign does not matter in which DVD format you use, they are basically the same thing.

Different DVD Format Drives

The DVD drive is a component of a computer that actually records data or movie onto the DVD disc. The different types of DVD drives basically break down into the same formats as the different DVD formats. There are DVD-RAM drives, DVD-R drives etc. It is important to match the different DVD formats with the burning capabilities of the DVD drives.

Another thing to consider when choosing a DVD Drive what you will use it for. If you are primarily going to back up computer data then it is best to choose a DVD-RAM burner, but if you are burning movies then you will have to choose one of the other DVD drives. These days many DVD drives are compatible with several DVD formats so the more options available with your drive the more flexible it will be.

In the conclusion, make sure that your DVD media, DVD drive and your playing device’s capabilities match.

If you are planning to burn DVD’s at home and understand the different DVD formats and have your DVD drive then you will need to have the appropriate DVD burning software. Depending on what you want to burn, there are different types of burning software.

How To Select A Suitable Pair Of Noise Canceling Headphones

Posted by Jamesmith in Electronics

As someone who has frequently used noise canceling headphones onflight, I truly attest to the claim that they can indeed make your flying experience a lot more welcoming. At least for now, I don’t have to live with the incessant hissing from the drone of the aircraft engine, the humming of the fans or other irritating noises coming from the surroundings while I laze in my economy seat.

It seemed incredible but this is actually made possible by simple audio technology. Microphones in the noise canceling headphones send out sound waves to combat noise whenever they detect its presence. In fact, on most airlines, they actually distribute noise canceling headphones to their guests on business and first class!

Well, instead of paying two or three months of your salary to purchase a business or first class ticket, here’s another cheaper option. Get a pair of noise canceling headphones yourself! But with so many brands and even models available, which should you go for?

Frankly, it depends. I’ll recommend that you go through these 4 considerations and do some research before you narrow down to the exact set that fits your criteria. Have fun picking the cherries!

(1) Budget

Naturally, all of us will like to get the best quality headphones. That is, if price is not an issue. But the truth is, money does matters. After all, the cost of a set of high end noise canceling headphones such as Bose Quiet Comfort series can cut you back by a hefty $300 or more. Hence, before deciding other form factors or criteria which I’ll be discussing later, it’s imperative that you decide the amount you’re willing to spend. That will in turn help you narrow down to the brands and models to review.

For example, if your budget is about $150, you may want to consider only brands like Sennheiser which has an excellent series of noise canceling at that price. Brands like Bose would be of a less likely consideration since they would probably cost you much more than that.

(2) Noise Canceling & Sound Quality

What good is a pair of noise canceling headphones if it doesn’t perform well in that department? You might as well get use a conventional set of headphones! Your personal preference for the extent of the noise cancellation onflight and the quality of the sound experience can easily influence your decision on the headphones to select.

For example, if you’re someone particular about the enjoying your music onflight, getting a higher end set can be just a thin line separating heaven and earth!

(3) Comfort

Noise canceling headphones are usually wore for a stretched period of time, depending on the duration of your flight. They can be a strain if the headphone cups are too tight over the ears. On the other hand, if they’re too loose, you probably have to prop them up everytime you lower your head! Put it simply, we want something that gives the right fit.

A rule of thumb is to ensure that the cups of the headphones go over your ears instead of on them and give a nice fit without losing too much coverage on the sound. At the end of the day, I’ll rather pay more for a pair noise cancelling headphones which scores well in the comfort department than something that’s less expensive but totally unbearable.

(4) Size

Is the headphone easily portable and foldable into a storage box for easy retrieval? Can the storage box be small enough to fit into your handcarry bag? At first glance, these seemed to be minor considerations. But for road warriors, this can matter a lot since every inch of space counts in their luggage. Trust me, I’m speaking from personal experience!

The Advantages Of Buying An LCD TV

Posted by Robertoms2003 in Electronics

What does LCD TV mean and how does it function? LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Behind the screen are a number of pixels followed by a fluorescent light. When this light falls on the pixels, an electric current is generated, creating light variations, which make up the vividly colored images that we see. Generally, the twisted nematic liquid crystal is used which has a naturally twisted crystalline structure.

The screen size of an LCD TV varies between 13-46 inches and it is about 2 inches deep in thickness. They are very light and so extremely easy to install. This indicates that they require very little space and come with a very sleek look. In fact, they can very well be compared to the fragile beauty of a woman!

Next is the consideration of the `burn-in` factor. LCD TVs are not susceptible to `ghosting` which results due to premature dying out of the pixels. The uniquely twisted crystals do not allow `burn-in` or `ghosting` to happen.

There has been a marked improvement in the refresh rate or response time of LCD TVs. Previously, the images tended to lag behind and stay on screen for a period of time that was much more than necessary. Recent technological advances have put all that behind. Usually, the response time varies with the size and quality of the LCD TVs.

The contrast ratio in the more advanced LCD TVs is 1000:1. The contrast ratio is measured by the ratio between the brightest white to the darkest black. The scenario has improved here too. Research is on to push the ratio well past the 1000:1 mark.

Sixty-thousands hours is the average life span of an LCD TV. So at an average viewing of 8 hours a day, an LCD TV should last for about 20 years. The life span of an LCD TV is dependent on the back-light. Since it uses a liquid crystal, there is nothing else which can wear out other than the back-light. Technology has found a way around this problem by creating replaceable back-lights as well.

Power consumption, which is perhaps a very important aspect, has a definite advantage in case of LCD TVs. LCD TVs utilize fluorescent back-lighting and so power consumption is low and steady.

LCD TVs are unaffected by changes in air pressure. This makes it a favorite among air travelers. The performance is consistent and the picture flawless, regardless of the altitude of the airplane.

There is much talk about mercury being used for the fluorescent lighting. But, the manufacturers will vouch-safe for the fact that a nominal amount of mercury is used. This mercury does not come in contact with the viewer and so is entirely harmless.

Some manufacturers are trying to incorporate picture-in-picture feature in their monitors. This feature enables a viewer to see one program on the full TV screen while a few other programs can run in small windows in it. The viewer gets the added advantage to watch a particular program, while waiting for the intermittent advertisements to end in another window.

Experiments are on to extend color reproductions in LCD TVs. The idea is to use two back-lights with slightly differing intensities of colors in consecutive frames. This will enable the viewer to experience a better and a more vivid picture using a more precise color variation.

An LCD TV is a whole new experience, the flavor of which can be savored only by purchasing one. The advantages are manifold and the experience is just exotic. Indulging in one is a worthy bargain.

What You Should Know Before Buying A Digital Camera

Posted by Robertoms2003 in Electronics

Digital cameras are a vast improvement over the regular cameras. Electronic sensors are used in digital cameras to store pictures on a memory card. These pictures can be uploaded to a computer by an USB cable. Some digital cameras can record sound and video also. It is imperative to study the different types of digital cameras, their features and identify our objective before buying a digital camera.

Check the following types of digital cameras:

Compact digital camera - These are `snapshot` cameras invariably small and compact in size. They lack sophisticated hardware. Images are stored in JPEG format. Compact digital cameras have a sharp focus and a built-in flash.

Bridge camera - These cameras form a `bridge` between the compact digital camera and the DSLR camera. They have small sensors but large zoom ranges. Also they have an LCD electronic screen which can take a live preview of the photo before clicking it. Bridge cameras employ either electronic viewfinders (EVF) or optical viewfinders (OVF). The quality of these viewfinders is undergoing sea improvement regarding their size, resolution, visibility, magnification and refresh rate.

Digital single-lens reflex camera - An automatic mirror system is used which displays the exact image. The absence of time lag in the image is a great advantage for taking photos where the subject is constantly on the move. There is an auto focus system and furthermore, the resolution is extremely good. The only disadvantage is the absence of a `live preview` in most DSLR cameras.

Digital rangefinder camera - This is a portable camera suitable for theatre photography, portrait photography, street photography and candid shots. A rangefinder is a range finding focusing accessory attached to a digital camera allowing a sharp focus. Wide-angle lenses are more often used in rangefinders. Filters which absorb much light or change the color of the image can be used in this camera.

Check the following main features:

Resolution - About 2 - 3 mega pixel resolution is enough for a decent digital camera. Resolution is a measure of the number of pixels on the sensor that create the picture. It is an important factor for printing a larger image or cropping it. Usually, the higher the resolution, greater the cost.

Type of lens - A glass lens gives a better quality picture than a plastic one. Again, a zoom lens adds greater versatility. Close-up mode - Many digital cameras have a special close-up mode which allows one to take close-ups of extremely small objects like jewelry and coins.

Manual mode - Modes of different types are there, which enhance the quality of photographs in a particular situation. Portrait, landscape and close-up are the special exposure modes. Shutter speed and lens opening can be maneuvered in the manual exposure mode. Burst mode allows a number of pictures to be taken in rapid succession. Also different filters can be used to provide beautiful effects. Extra flash modes can also enhance the clarity of the picture.

ISO - This value normally varies between 100 and 400. A higher value indicates that more number of pictures can be taken in dim light.

Conclusion:

After going through the different types of digital cameras and their features, one should ask oneself about the objective of buying a digital camera. The type of photography, the experience level, weather conditions, the budget and portability are all factors which need to be taken into account before purchasing a digital camera. A higher mega pixel rating means a higher price. If large prints are not the criteria, then mega pixel rating around 4 should suffice.

Lastly, reading reviews of the different digital cameras available for sale might just be the best option before purchasing an actual one.

How To Deal With The Disc Read Error Of Your Playstation 2

Posted by Robertoms2003 in Electronics

Please Advertise Here

Playstation 2 is a popular gaming console. If you are lucky, the gaming console won`t trouble you for 2-3 years, but sometimes, you will boot up your system and you will find an error message that reads: `Read Error`.

Sometimes, after the error message, you are able to play some DVD movies but you can never load some others, or you can play the PS1 games and not the silver coloured games of PS2. Such issues may not indicate serious errors and you can fix them with some minor adjustments with your Playatation 2.

However, when the issues look too big for you to handle, a few simple techniques can help you overcome these problems. Take a look at most of the common technical issues that your playstation2 gadget may be faced with.

Dirty and scratched disc:

Problematic discs are always main reason why you get `Disc Read Error` message on your Playstation 2 gaming console. The PS2`s laser bounces off the disc instead of reading the information if it finds dirt or scratch on the disc. While inserting the disc into your PS2, make sure that the disc is free of dirt or scratches. Bottled water and disc-washing detergent can be used to clean them up and then rinse them off.

The scratches are repairable. If cleansing the discs doesn`t work, you can use a wax-based furniture polish to fill in the scratches or you can select the option of buying a commercial disc-repair kit to get that done.

Cleaning the laser:

Sometimes, the dirt on the laser can lead to the error messages. You can get access the laser by opening the Playstation 2 case. Remove the disc tray after unscrewing all the screw and clean the laser-emitter. You can use cotton swans dipped in lens cleansing fluid o do this. After reassembling the case, turn the Playstation 2 on to test it by inserting the disc.

Laser ajustment:

Re-aligning the laser is another process if you fail to fix the error after cleaning the laser. Open the Playstation 2 case and you will find the laser wheel which is a hite plastic wheel with notches all around the rim. Adjust the wheel of the laser to its lowest level. Sometimes the discs work best in upright position. So try to place the system in vertical position putting it on the base.

There are some other complicated errors that are not easy to fix unless you are taking your PS2 to the authorized dealer. Of course there are some other problems that you can fix if you follow the PS2 repair guide.

The repair guide will provide you with all the details about fixing the gaming console along with the photographs of the system, tool lists and simple and sit by bit instructions about what you need to do. However, if your PS2 is under warranty, you should think of cracking the seal to fix the error.

While repairing your PS2 you will have to open some of the parts such as the, disc tray and work with some delicate parts of the system. So you must be careful about not bending or breaking any of the internal parts as you are taking the device apart.

However, remember that you are performing the action at your own risk. If you are not comfortable with any of the work, you better visit any authorized dealer. Don`t forget to unplug the console before opening the system.

The continuous developments in gaming technology are giving new makeover to gaming consoles. So it is better to follow the instruction given in the guides.
