Interesting Facts About Camcorders

Posted by Robertoms2003 in Electronics

The portmanteau name of camcorder comes from the two words that describe it the best that is `camera` and `recorder`. It is a device that records audio as well as video images and saves it in its storage device.

Camcorders that initially used analog video tapes were earlier used for broadcasting of television images. They were huge in size, and had to be carried around on trolleys. However, as technology advanced, camcorders that could record digital videos started flooding the market, and soon by the 1990`s they were so small and convenient to use, that almost every home demanded one of these devices.

Camcorders consist mainly of three components: the lens of the camera, the imager and the recorder.

The lens is the `light path` of the camera that consists of a number of adjustments to allow the user to capture pictures and videos exactly as desired. These adjustments include parts like aperture (that allows one to control and adjust the light), the zoom function (that is used to adjust the field-view area covered by the lens), and the shutter speed (that helps capture any form of continuous motion).

The image, that could be called the camcorders `eye`, is used for housing the photosensitive devices. This is where electronic video-signal is developed from the light captured, in quite a complex electronic process.

The last section, that is the recorder, provides a number of signal-processing functions that help in copying the captured and developed video signals on the desired recording mediums (like the magnetic videotapes).

Camcorders operate on electricity and these days, most commonly they depend on rechargeable batteries. Therefore it is a must that you select your camcorder batteries well, and carefully, since they are going to be with you for a long time.

Camcorders come with a variety of features, some of the latest as well as the most popular additions being the flat LCD camcorder screens. Screens that can be rotated about 290 degrees along the vertical line, and horizontally about 90 degrees are also very popular among buyers, since they make video recording a luxury.

These days camcorders can be seen being used almost everywhere. Be it the electronic media that practically depends on this device, or the low budget TV shows that need clarity of images and sounds, in the most reasonable prices, or the political protestors who need to film images to prove things to the world, or the happy parents who wish to capture their newborn`s tantrums and feel proud.Camcorders are just everywhere!

Camcorders come with various price tags (starting form just about a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars), depending on the features on the device, the clarity of sound and images provided, the company manufacturing it, etc. Much of it also depends on factors like the format used by them (like the digital format or the analog format that are extremely popular).

However, regardless of the technology these devices may be using or how sophisticated its features may appear to be, camcorders are very user friendly and can be used by anyone. One of the most popular and user friendly applications of camcorder can be found in cell phones where camcorders are incorporated so extensively. However camcorders that are included in cell phones do not provide pictures as clear as the pictures provided by the camcorders.

Needless to say, camcorders have surely come a long way since it was first introduced in the market, and judging by the rate of its growing popularity, it can be safely said that these devices are here to stay for a long time and continue to develop and grow. Camcorders surely have a long way to go!

Tips On Buying Digital Cameras

Posted by Ergo_items in Electronics

So you are all excited to go and barge to the mall to select and pick your very first digital camera. But before you pull out your cash or present your credit card to the eagerly awaiting cashier, here are a few tips that may help you make an informed choice in purchasing the “it” device that would take a snapshot of all your happy and memorable family and personal moments with a click and a snap here and there.

When going shopping, whether it may be for a digital camera or something else entirely, one should always have a set budget in mind. This is essentially an important consideration to make, lest you would want to spend on more than what you can afford and this is especially true with digital cameras as some have such prices that can cost you an arm and a foot if you are not careful.

The world-wide-web may be a great help for you in planning your digital camera purchase. There are a lot of companies who are offering digital cameras online so take advantage and do your financial research. This is also a good way for you not only to compare prices with but you also get to compare features of different digital cameras available in the market as well.

High-end digital cameras with greater zoom capabilities, more megapixels and other extra features can be very expensive, so if you are just starting off and is a newbie with the digital snapshot world then the best advice for you is to get a simpler, compact digital camera with the basic features. There are a number of great compact digital cameras out there and you might be delighted to find one that not only has features that will satisfy your photographic needs but also one that fits your budget as well.

And when looking for savings on your digital camera purchase, be wary of those package deal offerings. Most of these deals include accessories and other stuff that you really do not need but end up paying for. It would be best to look into each item, each item’s individual cost and whether or not you really need that bonus camera bag. Some manufacturers or vendors may use these packages to sell off substandard items that oftentimes mislead buyers into thinking they get the better end of the deal.

Aside from looking into those digital camera features like zoom, megapixels and image quality, you may want to check on the media type and battery type of your digital camera too. There are varied types of media cards available for digital cameras and they are all not that cheap. So if you are thinking of upgrading your digital camera in the future, it is best to choose one that has a flexible media card that can accommodate upgrades. It would be a waste to find your old media card obsolete and out of sync from the digital world. Second is to look at your digital camera’s battery type. Always look into durable rechargeable batteries that can last you a long time.

Helpful Tips When Buying A Laptop

Posted by Ergo_items in Electronics

At this time and age, we see a lot of individuals lugging their laptops around, may it be for business or for personal use. And although laptops seem common nowadays, it does not mean that they come cheap. Purchasing a laptop is still considered to be a big investment and is not something that should be rushed into.

You simply cannot just go to the computer shop, choose one that has a color that fits to your liking and say “charge.” There are a number of factors that you have to consider so that you can be sure that your purchased laptop gives you your money’s worth. If you are not careful you could be spending too much for something does not give off enough value. Clever minds or even common sense would tell you that before you splurge that cash, take into account what you are buying. If your excuse is that you do not have enough knowledge about laptops then fret no further. Here are a few helpful tips that should guide you in your electronic notebook shopping spree!

First is to figure out the purpose for which you will be using the laptop and the frequency of use. When you are going to be using your laptop on a regular basis, then it is important that you should buy one that provides you with the outmost ease and comfort in usage. Basic ergonomics would tell you that the laptop violates the rule which states that the keyboard and the screen should be separated to prevent trouble and pain in the wrist and the neck area. However, there are laptops which offer an interface which lessen the risks of carpal tunnel syndrome and neck pains. Go for comfort other than the color and the design when choosing. Thus, it is better to use a separate mouse than to depend on the tracking knob or pointer that is provided for in most laptops as a substitute for a mouse. This way you have more room and space to move your hands when typing or clicking on objects on the screen.

The ability to connect with other devices through your laptop is another thing to look into when buying a new laptop. Connectivity is an issue because connection upgrades for a laptop is not an easy feat because laptops are made with a basic design as compared with desktops. The thing to check for is the availability of wireless networking capabilities. A USB port is an important feature. Find a laptop that has more than one port so that you would not have to struggle and switch from your digital camera to your mp3 player to your external hard drive with just one.

Another thing that is not easily upgradeable is the processor. You do not want to have bought a new laptop and learn a couple of weeks or months after that your unit is already obsolete. Look for high performance graphic solutions processors that work just as well as their desktop counterparts.

An HD Radio That Plays DVDs - Amazing!

Posted by Dougger1 in Electronics

If you don’t know what an HD radio is, here’s the simple explanation. It’s digital radio versus the radio you’re listening to today — which is analog. The advantages of digital radio are many. The two most important are that it produces much better sound than conventional radio. In fact, if you listen to an AM station being broadcast in digital HD, you may think you’re listening to an FM station — that’s how clear and static-free the sound is. And listening to HD FM is almost as good as listening to a CD.

The second important advantage of digital HD radio, is that it allows broadcasters to pack more than one channel on the same frequency. These “other” channels are called HD2 channels. As an example of this, we have an FM station in my city that broadcasts easy listening music on its HD1 channel (or primary frequency) and all blues on its HD2 channel.

The Insignia Compact Bookshelf System — amazing versatility in a small box

While there are a number of tabletop HD radios available, I know of only one bookshelf system. It is the Insignia Compact Bookshelf System, available only from Best Buy. And what this little wonder will do is almost amazing.

Naturally, it does AM/FM/HD radio, including those “hidden” HD2 channels, and, at least to my ears, the sound is just extraordinary. It is one of the few HD radios available with separate speakers so that you can enjoy true stereo sound.

And that’s just the beginning

The Insignia unit also plays CDs, including those with MP3 tracks, and DVDs and VCD’s. (Note: I currently have an Insignia connected to my HDTV via an S video cable and the picture is outstanding). What’s more, there is a dock on the top of the unit for your iPod and a slot to connect USB devices. Plus, it will play MPEG4 discs and JPEG discs.

There are plenty of outputs on the back panel, so you can connect this unit to an amplifier to take advantage of your component system or to other speakers.

A word of warning

I did find some shortcomings in the insignia HD Radio and DVD Player. First, is the users guide. It is fairly helpful, but lacking in certain areas. For example, the instructions for using an MP3 device are missing several important steps. And finding HD2 channels with this unit is more difficult than other units I have experienced. You can set the unit to scan for just HD channels, but you have to look carefully to see when you are on an HD2 channel and then make note of the frequency so that you can come back later to establish a preset. Finally, creating presets is not an easy task. It’s a three step process, and you have to have fairly quick fingers to do it correctly.

However, in summation, I cannot think of any other compact system that packs so much versatility in a cabinet measuring just 6.5″ x 8.25″ x 6.5″ and costs less than $150. If you’re interested in this unit, do take note of the fact that Insignia is a house brand of Best Buy and available only through the Best Buy website.

Tips To Buying A Slim Tv

Television technology for the past 75 years has been based on the technology of CRT or cathode-ray-tube. In it there are guns that fire beams of electrons, which are particles that are negatively charged inside a tube, made of glass. These electrons cause excitement in phosphor atoms located at the screen end or the end of the tube that is wide. As a result the phosphor atoms gets lighted up. The phosphor coating being lighted up on different areas with various colours with dissimilar intensities produces the image on the screen.

The images are sharp and vibrant but the sets are bulky. Thus a big screen will result in a television set that will take up a good size of the room! With necessity being the mother of invention, this difficulty has led to the popping up of a new technology leading to plasma flat panels for display. These sets have wide screen but are only a few inches thick.

A video signal lights up thousands of dots inside the monitor or television. These dots are known as pixels having highly energized electron beams. Usually pixels have three colours - blue, red and green. These are evenly spread out across the screen. Combining these basic colours in different proportions produces the entire colour show. The fundamental idea of the plasma unit is to light up minute coloured lights that are fluorescent to create the image. Each pixel comprises of three of these lights - red, green and blue. Similar to the CRT, the plasma television alters the intensity of the various lights to bring about the effect of the full spectrum of colours.

The first generation of plasma displays did not have tuners that receive the television signal and interprets that to make a video image. But today digital tuners have been assembled to the main unit.

Plasma is the central element in the fluorescent light. It is a gas that has free flowing ions and electrons. Ions are atoms that have been electrically charged and electrons are particles that have been negatively charged. Normally a gas is made of uncharged particles. Thus a gas atom usually has equal number of protons and electrons atom resulting in zero total charge. But the scene rapidly changes with the introduction of free electrons in the gas. This leads to the setting up across it of electrical voltage.

Free electrons clash with the atoms dislodging other electrons. When an electron goes missing the atom loses its balances. It becomes and ion. In the case of plasma there is electric current passing through. This causes particles that are negatively charged to rush to that region of the plasma that is positively charged; on the reverse the particles, which are positively, charged hurry towards the area that is negatively charged.

There is a mad rush and one collides into another constantly. The gas atoms in the plasma get excited. Photons of energy are now released. The atoms used in plasma displays are neon and xenon atoms. The gases of these are contained in thousands of tiny cells sandwiched between two glass plates.

Thus to sum up we find that the Plasma TV forms a picture from plasma or gas that is filled with atoms of xenon and neon as well as innumerable electrically charged electrons and atoms that bump and collide to release energy or power. The net result is that without extra bulk, the viewing area gets enlarged. Rather than being fat the Plasma TV is slim and thin. The quality of picture is par excellence but the draw back is that the cost is beyond the reach of many people.

Why You Should Get A Webcam

Posted by Teahupoo in Electronics

Web cameras are everywhere now. If you have been on line at all in the past few years, then you have encountered a web camera in some form or another. They range from the mini to video camera size. Web cameras do have value, and are something that you should consider purchasing and setting up. Web cameras often get undo reputations as tools only for the unseemly, but there are far more family friendly reasons for using the web camera than other types of cameras. Though there are many more, here are five reasons to get a web camera for yourself.

First of all, a web camera, set up properly, can be practical. For instance, what if you decide to go out of town for a week or two? You have a number of house plants that you want to keep an eye on, or perhaps even a fish or a pet hamster. By setting up a web camera, you would be able, no matter where you are, to check in on them via a quick trip on line. If the plants look a little droopy, or the automatic fish feeder isn’t working, a quick phone call to a neighbor or friend would be perfect.

A second reason to think about a web camera is for peace of mind. If you work during the day and hire a babysitter, maybe you want to check in during the day, but you can’t just take off from work. Let the sitter know you are setting up a web camera not necessarily because you don’t trust him or her, but because you want to be able to see your baby during the day (and because you do want to make sure the babysitter is doing a good job). You can simply take a quick minute or two at work, log on, and see your child.

Third, maybe you leave your dog or other pet in the back yard during the day while you are at work and the kids are at school. You probably wonder what he does back there all day, or what kind of trouble he gets into during the day. Set up your new web camera to look at part of the back yard. If the dog is digging or getting into something he shouldn’t, you can take care of the problem.

Fourth and this is especially for those who live farther away from family, it is a good way for families to stay close. Grandparents can see their grandbaby napping or playing in her swing. Children can show their aunts and uncles their school project. Even great grand parents, who may not be able to travel, can see the newest addition to the family, a report card, or the great grandchild’s first steps across the living room. Magic moments caught from a distance are, alone, a great reason to think about a web camera.

A fifth reason to consider a web camera is that the sum of the practical reasons, sentimental reasons, and fun reasons to own one all add up to a value well above the financial cost. A web camera can be had for around $30, and with being able to show off the new baby, children’s artwork from school, check on the baby sitter, watch the dog, keep an eye on pets and plants while on vacation, and being able to say “hi” while face to face with a distant friend or far off relative is worth it. Hooking up the camera is easy, and the joy on the faces of relatives or catching that fern before is wilts completely are worth those few dollars and few minutes.

Perhaps you are concerned about having to set up a website to be able to put the images somewhere for people to see. Well, you can certainly do that if you have the expertise, but most of us don’t have the know-how for that. So, when purchasing your web camera, pay attention to what is offered. Because now, several companies are offering buyers a free place to upload the images. This space and the easy instructions will save you the trouble of having to set up and maintain a web server or even a hosted website.
