Who Has Breast Implants - And Why?
Posted by Aaaronson in Women's IssuesBreast augmentation was one the top five surgical cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2006, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons - and the decision reached by so many women to have the surgery were based on many more reasons than you may think.
There’s a popular misconception that the decision to have breast implant surgery is made solely by women who want significantly larger breasts. But the fact is that breast augmentation is more often chosen by women who wish to balance their naturally uneven breasts … to improve the natural feel and appearance of the breast … to increase their breast size just slightly … and as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.
Most patients today are very much aware of how greatly overall physical health contributes to outward beauty. They maintain their physical good shape by being active and athletic and for that reason most select the smaller to medium-sized implants, in keeping with the shape of their bodies and their desire not to have breasts that are too large to look natural - breasts that won’t be a hindrance to their very active exercise routines.
Breast implants - even when the smallest possible implant is selected - go a long way toward enhancing physical attractiveness and creating self-confidence. Still, most women choosing breast implant surgery already have a respectable amount of self-esteem and just want to enhance their beauty and femininity. They want a better fit and more choice in the clothes they wear, and to feel sexier and more attractive, whether in a bikini at the beach or in a form-fitting evening gown.
Even though you’ve surely heard stories of husbands urging their wives to have breast augmentation for the “va-va-voom” effect, that motivation is in the distinct statistical minority (and patients seeking surgery for that reason, alone, are usually discouraged from having it). Most women opting for breast augmentation aren’t doing it to make their husbands happy - although most report that a happy husband is an excellent bonus of the surgery, and that their sex lives do improve. (So far, no one has complained about that!)
If you are considering breast implant surgery, the most important first step in preparation is to be certain that you are in excellent general health so that the operation poses no undue risks. Beyond that, you need to be clear about why you are choosing to enlarge or reshape your breasts, and whether your goals are realistic.
One excellent way to reach a decision about whether breast implant surgery is for you is to take a “test run” with a system that will give you a really good idea of how your body will look - both to you and to others - with various sizes and shapes of implants. There are round implants and anatomical implants … and there are just about as many sizes you can imagine. Once you’ve experimented with a system of demonstration implants, know what size and shape you want, and are sure you’re electing to have breast implant surgery for reasonable reasons, with realistic goals, then it’s time to find the best plastic surgeon.
Ask friends who have had the procedure for recommendations. Women are usually more than happy to tell you about their experience if it was a positive one. Also, visit the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ website to find a board certified plastic surgeon in your community.
Many women are unhappy with the size or contour of their breasts and are choosing breast implants. The decisions to be made before surgery are often more difficult than the surgery itself.
